Sui tetradrammi tolemaici d’Egitto raffiguranti al dritto la testa diademata di Alessandro Magno con copricapo in pelle d’elefante e al rovescio Atena Alkidemos che avanza verso destra, la dea impugna la lancia.

Esemplare di Tolomeo I Sotere dall’asta Varesi 48 che ho in collezione.

    

Re Tolemaici d’Egitto. Tolomeo I Sotere. 305-282 a. C. Tetradramma (15,6 g, 28 mm). Diritto firmato dall’artista D (delta maiuscola).  Zecca di Alessandria. Coniato in nome di Alessandro III di Macedonia, circa 305 a. C. Testa con diadema di Alessandro a destra, con copricapo in pelle d’elefante; piccola delta maiuscola a destra dell’orecchio d’elefante / Atena Alkidemos che avanza a destra, brandendo una lancia e tenendo uno scudo; elmo, monogramma e aquila sul fulmine a destra. Svoronos 169; Jenkins, Early, gruppo a; SNG Copenhagen 19.

PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter. As satrap, 323-305/4 BC, or king, 305/4-282 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27.5mm, 15.62 g, 1h). Ptolemaic standard. In the name of Alexander III of Macedon. Alexandreia mint. Struck circa 306-300 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing elephant skin, aegis around neck, containing tiny Δ / Athena Alkidemos advancing right, brandishing spear and wearing shield on extended arm; to right, helmet, monogram, and eagle standing right on thunderbolt. CPE 63; Svoronos 168; Zervos Issue 24, obv. die 365; SNG Copenhagen 19. Attractive cabinet tone, light deposits, slightly off center on obverse. Good VF.

Tetradramma postumo (forse sotto Antigono Gonata) molto raro, di zecca incerta della Macedonia (forse Pella) (Triskeles Auctions, Sale 17, lot 70, 16.09.2016).

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. AR tetradrachm (27 mm, 16.70 g, 1 h). Uncertain Macedonian mint, perhaps Pella, posthumously, perhaps under Antigonos II Gonatas, ca. 280-ca. 275 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / [ΑΛΕ]ΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, Triton facing left, blowing horn; below throne, monogram. Mathisen grp. II, 3; Price 526. Rare Triton issue. Very rare issue. Fine.

Mathisen dated the rare Triton group of Alexander tetradrachms to 279/8 B.C. at Amphipolis. For stylistic reasons, Price thought they could not be from Amphipolis and instead suggested Pella. The issue, however, was certainly struck at a mint under the control of Antigonos II Gonatas shortly before he assumed the regal title in 277/6 B.C.
