Tetradramma Price 589 coniato sotto Antigono II Gonata ( https://leunumismatik.com/en/lot/32/58/[32] ).

tetra589leu.00058q00.thumb.jpg.1cb2791d6cb24adb68941c5d168db047.jpg

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.16 g, 1 h), Pella, struck under Antigonos II Gonatas, circa 277/6-274. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, grape on stem with tendrils. Price 589. Beautifully struck in high relief and of monumental early Hellenistic style. Nearly extremely fine.
Ex Nomos 21, 21 November 2020, 130. Estimate: 1000 CHF. Hammer price: 3000 CHF

3173572.m.jpg.4ec9e98ae3c22e7fa49eab5efba7f822.jpg

Eastern Celts AR Tetradrachm
Eastern Celts, Northern Greece or Asia Minor (?). Imitating Antigonos II Gonatas (277/6-239 BC), but in the type of Alexander III (336-323 BC). AR Tetradrachm (25 mm, 15.33 g), early to mid 3rd Century BC.
Obv. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress.
Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left on backless throne, holding long scepter with his left hand and eagle in his right; to left, grape.
Pink -. Lanz -. Cf. Price 589 for prototype.
Very rare, possibly unpublished. Nicely toned and good very fine.
From the D.A.K. Collection.

This is a particularly interesting coin: It imitates Price 589, an issue of Antigonos II Gonatas, the Macedonian king who defeated a huge army of Celtic invaders near Lysimacheia in 277 BC and sent the survivors to Asia Minor, where Nikomedes of Bithynia hired them as mercenaries. These Celts were subsequently settled in Central Asia Minor in a region that was later named Galatia after them. Could this coin have been struck by the Celts / Galatians during their migration through Northern Greece and Asia Minor?

Tetradramma Price 772, tempo di Demetrio I Poliorcete e Antigono II Gonata, in nome e nei tipi di Alessandro Magno (CNG, Electronic Auction 401, lot 24, 12.07.2017).

KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Demetrios I Poliorketes – Antigonos II Gonatas. Circa 300-250 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24.5mm, 16.43 g, 2h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint in the Peloponnese (Megalopolis?). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in wreath in left field. Price 772; Troxell, Peloponnesian, Group II, Issue 1, unlisted dies. Good VF, toned, light scuff and field marks on reverse. Rare.
From the J. Cohen Collection. Ex Group SGF (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 348, 8 April 2015), lot 250.

Although Martin Price did not assign this issue to a particular mint, Hyla Troxell suggested all the coins of her Group II were struck at the mint of Megalopolis, while that city was under the control of a tyrant who was installed by Antigonos II Gonatas. However, the style and fabric of some dies are nearly identical to the issues of Demetrios I Poliorketes that Troxell and Price placed at Corinth around 300 BC.

526.triskeles3261892_sok.jpg.1fd23a32654ad32252d795804d81b0da.jpg

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. AR tetradrachm (27 mm, 16.70 g, 1 h). Uncertain Macedonian mint, perhaps Pella, posthumously, perhaps under Antigonos II Gonatas, ca. 280-ca. 275 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / [ΑΛΕ]ΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, Triton facing left, blowing horn; below throne, monogram. Mathisen grp. II, 3; Price 526. Rare Triton issue. Very rare issue. Fine.

Mathisen dated the rare Triton group of Alexander tetradrachms to 279/8 B.C. at Amphipolis. For stylistic reasons, Price thought they could not be from Amphipolis and instead suggested Pella. The issue, however, was certainly struck at a mint under the control of Antigonos II Gonatas shortly before he assumed the regal title in 277/6 B.C.

ALEXANDER III. DER GROSSE (336 - 323)
Tetradrachm, Uncertain mint in Greece (?), probably under Antigonos II Gonatas, 280-260. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headress. Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, AI monogram. Price -; Hersh -. 16,72g. Very rare. Extremely fine.

The engraving style of this coin suggests that it comes from an uncertain mint in Greece as it is similar to certain dies used there (cf. Price 796-881). The full legend with ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ and its placement on this coin is not common for Alexandrine tetradrachms struck in Greece, but it is known. The other possibility for mint attribution is to an uncertain mint in southern Asia Minor, cf. Price 3064-84, but stylistically it is quite different from those issues.

The Aphlaston: The Heart and Soul of an Ancient Warship” in https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=aphlaston

C. circa.

4_564A.dramma1960008.jpg.6186303997ae773c2c8397858a176472.jpg

196, Lot: 8. Estimate $150. Sold for $261.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (19mm, 4.26 g, 12h). Pella mint. Struck under Antigonos II Gonatas, circa 279-277/6 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; torch below throne. Price 564A. Good VF, attractively toned. Well centered and struck.
