Un obolo dei sovrani macedoni ai tempi di Filippo III e Lisimaco con il simbolo della doppia protome equina non pubblicato dal Price (CNG Electronic Auction 345).

911572174_oboloMacedoniasimboliprotomecongiunte.PNG.848bd227331e2812383e659ee6a7a90c.PNG

KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Philip III – Lysimachos. Circa 323-280 BC. AR Obol (8mm, 0.56 g, 1h). Uncertain mint in Thrace or Asia Minor. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, two horse foreparts conjoined at their truncation; P below throne. Price 3871 corr. (not Susa). VF, toned, light porosity. Extremely rare. From the Patrick H. James Collection.

The Hersh coin cited by Price for his 3871 is now in the BM: 2002,0101.953. That coin is poorly struck, but one can see the right side horse. This confirms that it is not an issue of Susa, and thus SC 194 ("attribution doubtful [possibly barbarous]") is correct in suspecting that the issue is not Seleukid. This obol issue is not otherwise known, but the style is consistent with Price 3064 (and probably also 3065), which are tetradrachms with this same left field control mark. This control mark was used on civic issues of Perinthos, which led Thompson (Newell) to assign coins of Lysimachos with it to this mint, though hesitatingly. In her study on the mint of Perinthos, Schönert-Geiss notes that it the city had a mint under Alexander and Lysimachos (p. 4), and that these tetradrachm issues were expressly from that mint, as this symbol was representative of Perinthos (p. 14). No other cities seems to have used this particular symbol as a badge. Unfortunately, there is little hoard evidence to support an attribution to any mint at this time, but Price’s placement of these under Southern Asia Minor is speculative.

Il simbolo delle due protome di cavallo congiunte compare anche sui tetradrammi lisimachei di Perinto essendo il marchio della zecca di questa antica e fiorente città portuale greca della Tracia, affacciata sul Mar di Marmara.

KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 17.03 g, 11h). Perinthos mint. Struck circa 283-281 BC, or shortly thereafter. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; to inner left, joined foreparts of two horses above monogram; monogram in exergue. Thompson –; Müller 135; HGC 3, 1750q. Lightly toned. VF.

From the James Barry Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 46 (24 June 1998), lot 236.

The reverse die used to strike the present coin was apparently used for a variety of issues at Perinthos--see Berk BBS 204, lot 68; CNG E-421, lot 31; Gorny & Mosch 134, lot 1206; Numismatick Naumann 81, lot 46; and Numismatick Naumann 63, lot 566 for examples of five separate issues with the same joined horse foreparts, but different monograms. As such, the joined horse foreparts symbol is certainly the mintmark, and only Perinthos is known to have employed it as such during this period.

KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.00 g, 12h). Perinthos mint. Struck circa 283/2 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; to inner left, joined foreparts of two horses above monogram. Thompson 256 (same dies). Good VF, a few minor contact marks. Interesting symbol.

During the closing years of his reign, much of Lysimachos’ coinage was produced in the Macedonian part of his kingdom. However, the buildup to his eventual confrontation with Seleukos I in 281 BC may have necessitated a revival of output from many mints that had been largely inactive by this time. These events would account for late issues from such mints as Perinthos and Ainos.

CNG 81, 20 May 2009, Lot: 256. Estimate $750. Sold For $1660.
