...contrariamente a quanto era avvenuto qualche mese prima a Tiro e che sarebbe avvenuto qualche mese dopo a Gaza, Akko si arrese ad Alessandro risparmiandosi così le stragi che caratterizzarono la conquista delle altre due città e guadagnandosi il diritto di battere moneta.

Avevo accennato all’autonomia di Ake nel descrivere la sua posizione geografica pochi chilometri a sud di Tiro al post # 4199. Alessandro era tanto magnanimo nei confronti delle città che si arrendevano al suo passaggio in Fenicia come Ake, quanto vendicativo all’eccesso nei confronti di quelle a lui ostili come Tiro. Delle vicende militari con questa città ho detto dal post # 12 in poi nella discussione

Riguardo alle monete di Alessandro attribuite dal Price alla zecca di Ake nella sua opera principale, come riportato dall’autore nel trafiletto sottostante l’attribuzione tradizionale alla zecca di Ake è stata poi indirizzata a quella di Tiro da Lemaire (vedi A. Lemaire, “Le monnayage de Tyr et celui dit d’Akko dans la deuxième moitié du IV siècle avant J.-C.,” RN 1976, e G. Le Rider, Alexander the Great: Coinage, Finances, and Policy (Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society, 2007), pp. 125-34).

Oboli della zecca di Ectabana pubblicati dal Price.

Capitale dell’impero dei Medi e residenza regale, Ectabana secondo Erodoto sorgeva su una collina ed era circondata da sette ordini concentrici di mura in pietra, con i merli, probabilmente costruiti con mattoni cotti smaltati, in colore diverso per ciascuna cerchia. L’ordine più interno racchiudeva il palazzo reale con il tesoro e aveva i merli dorati. Con la fine dell’impero medo, Ecbatana fu conquistata (550 a. C. da Ciro che la saccheggiò. In seguito la città fu con Susa e con Babilonia la residenza dei re Achemenidi che rapidamente la portarono all’antico splendore. Nel 330 a. C. Alessandro Magno la occupò e saccheggiò, ottenendo un bottino di 180.000 talenti; poi ne fece la sua residenza, finchè nel 324 l’avrebbe distrutta per il dolore d’avervi perduto l’amico Efestione.

Ecbatana: il nome, da solo fa venire voglia di andarci!
Ma succede anche con altri luoghi dal nome evocativo; per me, ad esempio, Samarcanda, Timbuctù, Bandar al Abbas, Aqaba, Marrakesch, Alessandria... le ultime tre sono riuscito visitarle!

A proposito: Ecbatàna o Ecbàtana?

Mi sarebbe venuta la prima, con l’accento sulla terza sillaba, ma ho visto poi che la giusta accentazione è sull'altra, come in greco Ἐκβάτανα che letteralmente significa "luogo di riunione".

Fu a Ecbàtana che un giorno in cui si stavano preparando i festeggiamenti per l’arrivo dell’autunno, Efestione, di gran lunga il più caro di tutti gli amici di Alessandro Magno, allevato alla pari con lui e custode di tutti i suoi segreti, si ammalò. Tutto cominciò con la febbre a volte alta, a volte bassa che si alternò per alcuni giorni, ma quando si pensava che Efestione stesse meglio, ritornò una febbre altissima che lo stroncò. Morì tra le braccia di Alessandro che urlava di dolore fino a quando i suoi servitori e fedeli non riuscirono a staccarlo. Il dolore per la perdita fu tale che Alessandro entrò in un periodo di profonda depressione, nel quale tutto ciò che lo circondava gli era indifferente e i progetti di viaggi e conquiste finirono nel dimenticatoio. Ordinò che tutte le criniere dei cavalli fossero tagliate in segno di lutto, che tutto l’oro e l’argento fosse verniciato di nero, sempre in segno di lutto, e che il medico che aveva cercato di curare Efestione fosse arrestato, impiccato e che il suo corpo fosse poi inchiodato ad una croce.

Il rito funebre si sarebbe svolto a Babilonia con la cremazione del corpo. Alessandro fece costruire una pira altissima e riccamente decorata: ogni lato della base misurava duecento metri ed era rivestita di bellissime piastrelle. Mano a mano che si saliva, la pira andava assottigliandosi. Lungo le pareti erano scolpiti nel legno bassorilievi, scene di guerra con arcieri e guerrieri; poi torce lunghe sei metri, adornate da aquile e serpenti, quindi una scena di belve e cacciatori dorata. Subito sopra trofei d’armi, ancora più su elefanti, leoni e ghirlande. In cima si intravedevano sirene alate e grosse e lunghe bandiere cremisi pendevano svolazzando verso il basso. Quando il corpo di Efestione venne trasportato in cima alla pira, le sirene intonarono il canto e continuarono a cantare fino a quando non scesero di sotto. Avanzò Alessandro con una torcia accesa in pugno fino alla base della pira dov’erano nascoste tra le colonne fascine di paglia e erba secca; lanciò la torcia e le fiamme guizzarono. Gli amici di Efestione fecero altrettanto e le fiamme salirono a spirale fino alla cima dove il corpo di Efestione fu avvolto dalle fiamme, fino a quando, con un fragore, la torre iniziò a cedere, la bara scomparve all’interno e bruciò fino al mattino.
