Comincio da questo tetradramma del regno di Macedonia, coniato in nome e nei tipi di Alessandro Magno per il suo fratellastro Filippo III Arrideo, negli anni appena successivi alla morte del Grande.

Mit diesem Monogramm nicht in den einschlägigen Nachschlagewerken! Parallelstück in Dorotheum Auktion von Mai 2014, Lot 62. Die Münze bei Dorotheum ist allerdings stark korrodiert, so dass das komplizierte Monogramm nur in der Grundstuktur erfaßt wurde.

Il dritto del tetradramma precedente commemora la battaglia di Lisimachia del 277 a. C. nella quale Antigono Gonata sconfisse i Galati, fino allora imbattuti. Per la fama acquisita con questa vittoria Antigono Gonata fu eletto re di Macedonia e con lui ebbe inizio l’era degli Antigonidi.

Il volto del dio Pan con il retrostante lagobolon (bastone ricurvo per la caccia alla lepre) come emblema centrale dello scudo macedone fa riferimento all’aiuto che il dio diede ad Antigono causando terrore panico fra i Galati nella suddetta battaglia.

Al rovescio è raffigurata Atena Alchidemos (salvatrice del popolo) in armi con scudo e fulmine (veramente la dea qui ha più di una pin-up che di una donna in armi); elmo macedone nel campo a sinistra, monogrammi nel campo a destra; ai lati la scritta ANTIGONOU left, BASILEWS right (del re Antigono, sottinteso moneta).

L’elmo macedone come simbolo in basso a sinistra del rovescio è presente anche in questo mio tetradramma in nome di Alessandro per Antigono II Gonata proveniente da un’asta della Gorny & Mosch, che fa parte della serie catalogata dal Price ‘Pella 621-632’.

Il tetradramma è una delle emissioni macedoni (probabilmente Pella) più tarde, ca. 275-ca. 270 a. C., sotto Antigono Gonata, il figlio di Demetrio Poliorcete che regnò sulla Macedonia dal 276 a. C. alla morte con una breve interruzione nel 274-273 a. C. Per questo l’elmo crestato che caratterizza il gruppo 621-32 del Price appare regolarmente sulle emissioni di questo sovrano con i nuovi tipi della testa di Pan sullo scudo al dritto e Atena Alchidemos al rovescio, come la moneta vista in precedenza.

Philetairos, 282 - 263 v. Chr. Tetradrachme ø 31mm (17,22g). Mzst. ca. 282 - 275 v. Chr. Vs.: Kopf des Herakles mit Löwenskalp n. r. Rs.: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ, linkshin thronender Zeus mit Lotosblütenzepter in der Linken und Adler in der Rechten. Links im Feld Büste der Athena, unter dem Thron Mondsichel. SC 308b; HGC 125.

Das Stück entstammt der entscheidenden Phase der Entstehung des pergamenischen Königreiches. Philetairos, der den Schatz des Lysimachos auf dem Burgberg Pergamons verwahrte, ging mitsamt dessen 9000 Talenten im Jahr 282 v. Chr. zu Seleukos über. Der endgültige Fall des Lysimachos in der Schlacht von Kouropedion 281 v. Chr. und der Tod des Seleukos I. im folgenden Jahr brachten eine Zeit der Unsicherheit, die sich auch in einer unbestimmten, auf Neutralität bedachten Münzprägung des Philetairos ausdrückt. So greift der Dynastiegründer zunächst auf die politisch unbedenklichen Alexandertypen zurück, um etwas später seine Loyalität zu dem zu diesen Zeitpunkt wohl bereits verstorbenen Seleukos I. zu bekunden.
