Statere di Alessandro Magno non pubblicato dal Price (Gemini, Auction 10).

1001979201_4extraPriceGeministater1486494.m.jpg.da62b3b1f44222931137d8b812ca8e7e.jpg

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III The Great. 336-323 BC. Stater, 8.52g. (h). Asia Minor, uncertain mint, c. 320 BC. Obv: Head of Athena right wearing pearl necklace and crested Corinthian helmet ornamented with serpent. Rx: AΛEΞANΔPOY Nike advancing left holding wreath and ship's mast, lion's head and hook in left field, pentagram in right field below Nike's wing. Not in Price. EF.

This is another unknown variant to supplement the large gold coinage of Alexander the Great and his immediate successor Philip III. Both the lion's head and the pentagram can be found on issues from Abydus and Magnesia in Asia Minor, but this coin does not fit the coinage of either of those mints. The style is clearly reminiscent of early posthumous issues from Asia Minor, however.

Testa di leone, fiaccola (scambiata erroneamente per un uncino nella didascalia) e pentagram sono simboli presenti sulla dramma Price 1834 della zecca di Colofone.

Bronzo di Filippo II di Macedonia (CNG 775343)

91190725_7.BronzoFilippoCNG775343.jpg.3f852ee77630ecb5bff46039841e0680.jpg

KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. Æ Unit (15mm, 6.03 g, 4h). Uncertain mint in Macedon. Diademed head of Apollo right / Youth on horseback riding right; pentagram below. SNG ANS 858. Good VF, dark brown patina, struck on a slightly oval flan.

Unpublished Lysimachos Tetradrachm

KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.61 g, 5h). Pella or Amphipolis mint. Struck circa 286/5-282/1 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; pentagram above AP monogram to inner left, [head of lion left in exergue]. Gorny & Mosch 142, lot 1292; Rauch 90, lot 68 = Lanz 141, lot 87; Künker 124, lot 7904; Rauch 76, lot 308 (all from the same dies). EF, struck from a re-engraved obverse die, hairline scratches on Alexander’s cheek.

From the Demetrios Armounta Collection. Ex Lanz 123 (30 May 2005), lot 151.

Although unpublished, the spiral lock of hair below the ear is commonly seen on obverse dies used on Thompson issues 202–212 at Amphipolis. In fact, the style of these dies are so similar that it suggests a single die engraver was responsible for these. It is very likely that this engraver, or a student of his, also operated at Pella, as this spiral lock feature is visible on some of the latest issues there, Thompson 253–255. The monogram here is the same as that on Thompson 253, and some examples have the spiral lock on the obverse: cf. Birkler & Waddell 2, lot 117, and Ars Classica XII, lot 1270. This control mark similarity suggests this coin would more likely belong to the spiral lock group at Pella, but it is also possible that it is from Amphipolis.

CNG 323, Lot: 36. Estimate $300. Sold for $1100.

THRACIAN KINGDOM. Lysimachus (305-281 BC). AR tetradrachm (28mm, 16.89 gm, 11h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Colophon or Pergamum, ca. 287-282 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛYΣIMAXOY, Athena enthroned left, holding Nike crowning royal name in right hand, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; crescent to inner left, pentagram on throne. Thompson --. Muller --. This symbol combination seemingly unrecorded.

The control placement seen here, a pentagram on the throne and a crescent in the inner left field, can be found on drachms of the Alexander type attributed to Colophon in Ionia; however, they have so far not been recorded on a tetradrachm. Colophon is thought to have minted only Alexander-style drachms for Lysimachus, however it may have engaged in a limited striking of tetradrachms; the obverse style, however, is clearly that of Pergamum.

Vindication of Price

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Diobol (1.37 g, 1h). ‘Amphipolis’ mint. Lifetime issue, struck under Antipater, circa 332-326 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Two eagles standing confronted; wreath between. Price 16; Troxell, Studies, Group B3. Good VF, granular surfaces. Extremely rare and exceptional.

In Troxell’s study of the Macedonian mint, she concluded that Price’s description of this type, as bearing a wreath, was mistaken. All of the examples known to her had a leaf, rather than wreath, including the coin Price used in his plates. This coin, however, vindicates Price, as it clearly has a wreath. Accordingly, this type belongs to Troxell’s group B3, which has the wreath symbol.
Estimate: 500 USD
