Tetradrammi di Alessandro Magno senza simboli: zecca incerta dell’Est, circa 325-300 a. C., cf. Price 4004 (CNG 402).

KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Alexander III – Seleukos I. Circa 324/3-300 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 17.17 g, 6h). Uncertain eastern mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; no control marks. Price 4004(?). VF, lightly toned, a few light marks. Very rare.

There are a number of issues that Price lists that have no control marks. Assignment to one of these can only be substantiated by comparing style. The style of this issue is clearly eastern, but does not match any of the unmarked issues that Price gives to any established mint. Thus, Price 4004 appears to be the only possible match, but that issue is not illustrated in Price, and he references a piece in the ANS that does not seem to exist since there are no examples of that type listed in the Pella.

4450237l.thumb.jpg.fb3443f4ff7bb0461444960eb1c8bfe7.jpg

Macedon, Koinon of Macedon Æ25. Pseudo-autonomous issue struck during the reign of Severus Alexander. Beroea, circa AD 222-235. AΛEΞANΔPOY, diademed head of Alexander III 'the Great' to right / KOI[NON MAKEΔONΩ]N NEΩ, Alexander, standing right, taming Bucephalas, rearing left. Cf. SNG Copenhagen 1357 (weight). 11.87g, 25mm, 7h.

Good Fine.

According to Plutarch, the beautiful black steed Bukephalos was offered to king Philip II for a fabulous sum of money by a man from Thessaly. Philip was prepared to pay the price demanded but first wished to try the horse. The horse proved to be unmanageable, rearing up against anyone who attempted to mount him, and so Philip rejected the opportunity to purchase it. Alexander, spectator to these events, accused the handlers of weakness repeatedly as the horse was being led away. In response Philip made a wager with Alexander on his ability to ride the horse, whereupon he would pay the full price for it should he fail.

Having noticed that the horse was disturbed by the motion of his own shadow, Alexander took the bridle and turned the horse's head towards the sun. He began to lead the horse forwards and soothing it with some petting, leapt and mounted the horse without issue. Now seated, Alexander kept a gentle hand on the reins and slowly drew in the bridle, eventually bringing Bukephalos under his complete control.

149083326_StatereAleLisimacomoltoraronomos4390253l.thumb.jpg.31e22749aa6e5893f2edf7260fce9b77.jpg

KINGS OF THRACE. Ptolemy Keraunos, 281-279 BC. Stater (Gold, 20 mm, 8.53 g, 5 h), in the name and with the types of Lysimachos, Lysimacheia, 281-280. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right, with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev.ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left on low-backed throne, holding Nike, crowning the king’s name, in her right hand, a long, transverse spear in her left, and with her left elbow resting on a shield ornamented with a facing lion's head; to left, below Nike, lion's head to left; to the left of Athena's knee, elephant; on throne, monogram of ΘΕ. Hollstein p. 14, fig. 3 (this coin). Of the greatest rarity, the second known example. A coin of the greatest historical interest. Some very minor marks on the reverse, perhaps at the time of minting, otherwise, virtually as struck.
Privately purchased from Tradart, ex Bank Leu 50, 25 April 1990, 93.

For the very convincing attribution of this gold stater and its accompanying silver tetradrachms to Ptolemy Keraunos, the assassin of Seleukos I, see W. Hollstein, Münzen des Ptolemaios Keraunos, SNR 74, 1995, pp. 13-24 (the second known example of the stater appeared in the collection of the late L. Adams, CNG MBS 72, 14 June 2006, 499 = Triton XIX, 5 January 2016, 2037). Keraunos was the son of Ptolemy I by his first wife, Eurydike, a daughter of Antipater. Passed over for the succession in favor of his half-brother Ptolemy II, son of Ptolemy I and his second wife Berenike, Keraunos hastily fled Egypt for the court of Lysimachos: his sister Lysandra was the wife of Agathokles, the heir of Lysimachos, and his half-sister Arsinoe was Lysimachos' present wife. After a variety of intrigues that resulted in his flight to Seleukos, whom he convinced to attack Lysimachos (he was defeated and killed by the Seleukid army at the Battle of Corupedion in 281), he then assassinated Seleukos (!) and managed to be proclaimed king of Macedon.

731622.jpg.397a382b46543d8b8f6f137c253fbbfd.jpg

THRACE, Kings of. Lysimachos. 323-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.92 gm). Lysimachia mint. Struck 281-280 BC. Head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛΥΣIMAXOΥ, Athena seated left, holding Nike in her extended right hand, left arm leaning on her shield; lion head left above elephant left in inner left field; ΘE monogram on throne. Müller 55; Pozzi 1169 (same dies); Gulbenkian 899 (same dies). EF. Extremely rare. $5,750. CNR XXVII, June 2002, lot 28.

This coin is one of the most enigmatic to appear in one of our publications. It is generally agreed through hoard evidence and analysis of the symbolism and style that this coin was struck at the mint of Lysimacheia within the few months between Lysimachos' death at Korupedion in 281 BC and the city's autonomous period that began in 280 BC. During this time the city was first under the control of Seleukos I and then Ptolemy Keraunos, following his assassination of Seleukos. After his death in 280 BC, the city was granted its autonomy under Antiochos I. The mystery is determining under whom this issue was struck and why.
One possibility is that the coin was struck under Seleukos I. The appearance of the elephant symbol on this rare type is the key to this attribution. After Seleukos obtained his 500 elephants from Mauryan King Chandragupta and used them to defeat Antigonos Monopthalmos at Issos in 301 BC, the elephant became a symbol of Seleukos and appeared on many of his coins after 295 BC (see Houghton, Seleukid Coins pg. 3-4). Demetrios Poliorketes even gave Seleukos the slightly derisive epithet "elephantiarch". Save for the single issue to which this coin belongs, the elephant never appears as a control mark on a coin struck in the name of Lysimachos.
There are a number of reasons that would necessitate an emission at Lysimacheia under Seleukos. After occupying Lysimacheia Seleukos began to march his army into Macedon, probably intent on securing its throne for himself. It is likely that preparations had to be made for this excursion, and could have prompted the issue. Also, it could have been struck as a payment to his victorious troops due to their recent accomplishments. There are, however, a few problems with this theory. Although it is not unorthodox for Seleukos to use a Lysimachos-type tetradrachm for the issue, it seems odd in the aftermath of Korupedion that he would place his symbol in such a diminutive fashion upon the coin. Also, Seleukos never employed the elephant as a control mark on his coinage, only as an obverse or reverse type.
In the only article published on this particular issue, Hollstein (SNR 74 (1995)) believes that it was Seleukos' assassin, Ptolemy Keraunos, who was responsible. He argues that Keraunos used the Lysimachos-type coins because he modeled himself as the heir of Lysimachos, and that the elephant symbolized the military power that he possessed. Hollstein dismisses the idea that an absence of other coinage attributed to Keraunos debunks his theory. Nonetheless, this is a valid counterpoint, for, as Hollstein's article even exhibits, Keraunos was involved in numerous other military ventures in an autonomous capacity, but apparently never struck his own coinage. Also, in light of the recent events, the elephant as a symbol would have been more identifiable with Seleukos, and it would also be odd for him to use it while claiming to be the successor of Lysimachos, who was recently killed by the 'Elephantiarch'.
There is a more likely solution to the problem: the issue was struck autonomously by Lysimachia for Seleukos, perhaps as a tribute payment that could have been demanded by him to help finance his upcoming expedition or simply to pay his victorious troops. It would be likely that the mint would have had little time to prepare, so it would justify using the same types they were familiar with, with the addition of a symbol they thought appropriate for the issue. Such an 'autonomous' emission would avoid the problems associated with a Seleukid minting under Seleukos, and also account for the use of the elephant as a symbol on the coin.

1372833047_DrammaMitridateRomaNumVII1109882l.jpg.868f50bae928a5de3b30f69eb62b5ac5.jpg

Kingdom of Pontos. Mithradates VI Eupator AR Drachm. May-August 95 BC. Diademed head of Mithradates to right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ EYΠATOPOΣ above and below Stag feeding to left; star within crescent to left, date and monogram in exergue; all within ivy wreath. Callataÿ D2/R1e; SNG von Aulock 6684. 4.14g, 18mm, 12h. Extremely Rare; this is one of only eleven known examples, of which five are in museums. From the James Howard Collection. This coin was struck in a pivotal year for the coinage of Mithradates Eupator. Beginning in the eighth month of the Bithynian-Pontic year 202 (May 95 BC), Mithradates began placing dates in the reverse field on his precious metal coinage. The tetradrachms include both the year and the Greek numeral for the month, while the drachms have only the year. It appears that each year a different magistrate was responsible for the coinage, and all coins for 95 are signed by a certain Theophanes(?) whose monogram appears alongside the date. Months represented on the tetradrachms are May through November, coincidentally but perhaps not unintentionally the duration of a campaign season. Although Mithradates did not strike any dated gold in 95 BC, the reverse of the drachms copies that of the staters by depicting a stag instead of the Pegasos as found on his tetradrachms.
