GC Le monete più attraenti di Alessandro Magno

Nella ricerca di dramme di peso molto al di sotto di quello standard di 4,25 g, ho trovato un’imitazione di una dramma di Alessandro con il busto di Eracle in pelle di leone rivolto a sinistra, come su alcuni tetradrammi ufficiali rari e costosi.

La moneta proviene dalla Triskeles Sale 16, lot 1.

Lower Danube. Imitating Alexander III of Macedon. 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. Fourrée drachm (15 mm, 3.20 g, 6 h). Head of Herakles left, wearing lion's skin headdress / AΛΞΞAIIΔPOY ( sic ), Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, K (retrograde). Cf. Price B15 (head right, retrograde B below throne), otherwise seemingly unpublished. A couple of tiny breaks in the plating. Neat with head left. Very fine.

Una dramma di Alessandro Magno con questa caratteristica del diritto, fino a prova contraria ufficiale, è stata descritta al post # 3242.

Tra le mie dramme di Lampsaco c’è questo esemplare (InAsta 33, lotto 198) con uno strano segno sotto il trono di Zeus. Cosa potrà mai essere?

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (4.310 g, 17 mm, 12 h). Lampsakos mint. Struck under Antigonos I Monophthalmos, circa 305-303 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / ALEXANDROU, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and sceptre; mouse right in left field. Price 1427; ADM II 418; Müller 654.

Negli esemplari Price 1427 delle aste in rete e di alcune collezioni (ANS, British Museum) non c’è nulla sotto il trono di Zeus, come nella foto 1427b del Price.

Invece nella foto 1427a si nota come un deposito di metallo nella stessa posizione della mia dramma, ma molto più corposo. Potrebbe trattarsi di un’eccedenza di metallo e penso che l’analisi SEM-EDS possa dare qualche risposta in merito. Vedremo.

Buonasera

Dato che s’è parlato recentemente delle monete di Cirene, ho voluto descrivere quelle coniate in questa zecca in nome di Alessandro Magno. Nel Price (1991) sono riportate otto monete coniate a Cirene tra circa il 305 e il 300 a. C. precisamente tre stateri (3984, 3998, 3989), un emistatere (3983), tre tetradrammi (3985, 3986, 3987) e un bronzo (3990).

Si tratta di monete rare e di difficile reperibilità: ne ho trovate alcune che posto qui e a seguire.

Emistatere Price 3983 (Triton XIX, lot 2077)

PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter. As satrap, 323-305 BC. AV Hemistater (14mm, 4.28 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Kyrene mint. Struck under Ophellas or Magas, circa 310-305 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing single-pendant earring, necklace, and crested Corinthian helmet decorated with serpent / [AΛ]EΞANΔPOY, Nike standing left, holding wreath in extending right hand, cradling stylis in left arm. Price 3983; Naville 238 (same dies); SNG Berry 190 (same dies); Consul Weber 1214 (same dies). EF, light marks, some die wear. Extremely rare, only the two listed by Naville and the SNG Berry pieces published, all from the same die pair.

PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter. As satrap, 323-305 BC. AV Stater (16mm, 8.51 g, 9h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Kyrene mint(?). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with serpent, and necklace / Nike standing left, holding wreath in extended right hand and cradling stylis in left arm; Θ (3-bar sigma)YΦ(?) to upper left, Silphion plant below left wing. Cf. Price 3984 for a half-stater with only the silphion symbol, otherwise unpublished. Near VF. Unique.

Although the Alexander-type gold from Kyrene dates to the early reign of Ptolemy I (under Ophellas or Magas, circa 310-305 BC), the attribution of this particular issue is uncertain. Most problematic is the absence of the name of Alexander, and the presence of the odd legend, which may include a three-bar sigma. If so, this piece must date much later than the issues of Ptolemy I. While the obverse is of acceptable style, the style of Nike is quite unusual, even crude. Perhaps this was an issue of some late usurper against Ptolemaic rule, or simply a local issue? In any event, the presence of the silphion plant strongly suggests this coin was struck somewhere in Kyrenaika, if not in Kyrene.

Obverse: Head of beardless Heracles right wearing lion skin headdress. Kopf des jugendlichen Herakles nach r. mit Löwenfell. Tête d'Héraclès imberbe à dr. coiffé d'une dépouille de lion.

Reverse: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ - Zeus seated on stool-throne left, eagle on outstretched right hand, sceptre in left hand. Zeus nach l. thronend, in der ausgestreckten R. Adler und in der L. Zepter haltend. Zeus assis à g. sur un trône, un aigle dans la main dr. tendue et un sceptre dans la main g.

Ho lasciato la descrizione del diritto e del rovescio in tre lingue. Quei colori verde e rossastro che fan da contorno alle figure sul rovescio ma si notano anche in alcune zone del diritto si uniscono alla particolarità dell’Heracles left. Infatti questo tetradramma di Cirene è una delle varianti inusuali, accanto alle tre di Pella, in cui Eracle è rivolto a sinistra anziché a destra. Martin Price pensa che si trattasse di un breve esperimento dopo la morte di Alessandro all’inizio del regno di Filippo III, fratellastro del Grande, per distinguere le sue monete da quelle di Alessandro.

Sono noti vari bronzi con Eracle rivolto a sinistra, e, come ho visto di recente, probabilmente anche qualche dramma (post # 3301 e 3242).

Alla Triton XX è battuto questo tetradramma di Clazomene dal rovescio molto particolare.

IONIA, Klazomenai. Circa 240-225 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.83 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Philon, magistrate. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, forepart of winged boar left above [Φ]IΛΩN. Meadows, Hellenistic 1743 = Price 1743 var. (magistrate); CNG E-363, lot 155 (same dies). VF, toned, minor die break on reverse. Extremely rare variety of a very rare series at Klazomenai, only one other known.

Il simbolo nel campo a sinistra è la parte anteriore di un cinghiale alato, con sotto la scritta del monetiere [Φ]IΛΩN che rappresenta una novità. Può darsi poi che quel disegno a meta della gamba del trono di Zeus raffiguri una sfinge come decorazione.

Conosco il testo, anche perchè il coautore Frank Holt è l’autore del libro “Alexander the Great and the Mystery of the Elephant Medallion” che ho in biblioteca.

Quanto al tema, ho descritto qualche medaglione qui e nella discussione sulle monete di Filippo II di Macedonia. Anzi, prendo la palla al balzo per ‘riunire la famiglia regale macedone’, dato che stiamo entrando nel clima natalizio. Comincio con il Grande.

Gold medallion from Aboukir. 49 g, 46 mm, 12 h. Obv.: Draped and veiled bust of Olympias to right, holding a scepter with coiling serpent. Rev.: BACIΛEΩC – AΛEΞANΔPOV. Athena wearing chiton, peplos, aegis, and Corinthian helmet sitting on throne to left, feeding serpent in olive tree in front of her.

 

Ricordiamo anche la dolcissima e bellissima sorella di Alessandro, Cleopatra, a lui molto legata, che andò sposa ad Alessandro re d’Epiro, fratello di Olimpiade e quindi zio omonimo del Grande, proprio nel giorno in cui Filippo cadde vittima della congiura.

E non possiamo dimenticare Bucefalo e Pèritas, i due fedelissimi compagni di Alessandro che l’hanno accompagnato praticamente per tutta la sua tanto breve quanto intensissima vita.

Dalla CNG 81, lot 341 una dramma Price 2319 come la precedente, però coniata sopra una dramma civica di Chio con la sfinge come simbolo. Il volto e il busto della sfinge sotto il braccio di Zeus sono coperti dal monogramma e dal grappolo d’uva.

The face and breast of the sphinx are clearly visible on the reverse in the field above Zeus’ arm.
