1930j Deutsche 3-mark

Il vecchio vereinsthaler dei giorni prima dell'unificazione tedesca è sopravvissuto fino a circa 1908, quando è stata ritirata, demonetized, e sostituito dai nuovi 3-mark moneta. (Il 3-mark spesso colloquialmente è stato denominato un “thaler"„fino a ritirarselo esso in se nel early-1930s.)

The old vereinsthaler of the days before German unification survived until about 1908, when it was withdrawn, demonetized, and replaced by the new 3-mark coin. (The 3-mark was often colloquially called a “thaler” until it was itself retired in the early-1930s.)

Some good luck last weekend brought me this 1930 German commemorative:

With Hamburg’s “J” mintmark, and a mintage of 261,000:

The end of the 3-mark denomination was only a few years away when this 1930j “Evacuation of the Rhineland” commemorative was issued. The angular Art Deco eagle on this piece looks quite resolute, which is consonant with the new right-leaning government that had taken power in Germany that year.

Around the coin’s rim is the unabashed declaration “Der Rhein Deutschlands Strom; Nicht Deutschlands Grenze:” which translates into English as (I think), “The Rhine is Germany’s strength; not Germany’s border.”

As a reward for what was thought to be a final “final settlement” of the question of the WWI reparations owed by Germany under the Treaty of Versailles, the Allies had ended their occupation of the Rhineland five years ahead of schedule.

But it was 1930 and the world economy was headed for Depression; American loans to Germany had dried up and Hitler would see his political power multiplied several times over before year’s-end. The time when good faith might have bred good faith was past.

I like the three Reichsmark of 1925 ( 1000 Jahre Rheinlande), of 1929 ( Vereinigung Waldecks mit Preussen) and that of 1931 (Magdeburg) too.

Posso vedere che ci sono altri sulla Forum che apprezzino i commemoratives di Weimar del `20s e del `30s. Sono le bellezze. E solidamente espressivo, anche. (Inoltre desidero lo Zepp e i '31 Magdeburg, e i ‘28 Dinkelsbuhl, e i …!)

Classificando dalla foto del Internet può essere ingannevole--come tutta qui sul pozzo della forum sa--così allo scopo il confronto che pubblicherò il grado ho dato questo 1930j 3RM mentre si siede in mia mano: AU+ = AU55 = SPL+.

Non conosco virtualmente niente “delle scuole dell'arte„ (come la discussione di Art Nouveau altrove sulla forum indica), in modo da se chiunque deve contraddire la mia descrizione dell'aquila su questo 1930j 3RM come “Art Deco,„ io sarò molto felice di ricevere la formazione.

I can see that there are others on the Forum who appreciate the Weimar commemoratives of the ‘20s and ‘30s. They are beauties. And solidly meaningful, too. (I also want the Zepp, and the ’31 Magdeburg, and the ’28 Dinkelsbuhl, and the...!)

Grading by Internet photo can be tricky—as everyone here on the Forum well knows—so for purposes of comparison I’ll publish the grade I’ve given this 1930j 3RM as it sits in my hand: AU+ = AU55 = SPL+.

I know virtually nothing of the “schools of art” (as the Art Nouveau discussion elsewhere on the forum indicates), so if anyone needs to contradict my characterization of the eagle on this 1930j 3RM as “Art Deco,” I’ll be very happy to receive the education.

I need to correct a mistake. My translation of the legends here is wrong. “Der Rhein Deutschlands Strom, Nicht Deutschlands Grenze” should translate “The Rhein is Germany’s River, Not Germany’s Border.” (My mistake was to render “Strom” as “Strength.”)

One of the best things about collecting—as all of us here know—are the connections that sometimes surprise us. While photographing a coin the other day, this piece of fun came my way:

The Rhodesian eagle is modelled on a soapstone carving found in the ruins that give Zimbabwe its name.
