1961 Neewollah "nichelino in legno"

“Non prendono qualsiasi nickels in legno ” è una frase ben nota in Inglese americano, e i riferimenti i token di legno—spesso con un valore equivalente al 5-cent nichel—prima che sono state introdotte in quello americano Northwest all'epoca difficile della grande depressione della ‘30s.

Messo un “nichelino in legno” con me ieri. È stato rilasciato nel 1961 come parte della celebrazione “Neewollah ” nella città di Indipendenza, Kansas (37o13’42”N, 95o42’41”W):

“Neewollah” è Halloween ortografia indietro, con il festival avvio nel 1919 in risposta a un Halloween particolarmente pieno di prank la anno precedente.

“Don’t take any wooden nickels” is a well-known phrase in American English, and references the tokens made from wood—often with a value equivalent to the 5-cent nickel—that were first introduced in the American northwest during the hard times of the Great Depression of the ‘30s.

I brought a “wooden nickel” home with me yesterday. It was issued in 1961 as part of the “Neewollah” celebration in the town of Independence, Kansas (37o13’42”N, 95o42’41”W):

“Neewollah” is Halloween spelled backwards, with the festival being started in 1919 in response to a particularly prank-filled Halloween the previous year.

The “Neewollah” festival was held annually until the Great Depression, was briefly revived in 1938, stopped again by WWII, and revived again in 1958. The festival is still being held—in 2009 it begins October 23rd. (During “Neewollah,” the town’s population increases from 11,000 to over 70,000.)

But these are things I learned after I bought this wooden nickel. Here, on this side of the piece, is the reason I brought it home:

As you can see, (in addition to 13 annual growth rings!) there is an incredible amount of optimism displayed by this token—this wooden nickel was good for 5 cents in 1961, is still good for 5 cents today, in 2009, and will still be good for 5 cents—if you can still find the town’s Chamber of Commerce--every tomorrow through October 21, 2961!

Si :D. Mantenere solo un piccolo campione di nickels in legno nella mia collezione (ci sono molte decine di migliaia di tipi, come potete immaginare!), ma verrà sono lieti di mostrarvi alcuni tipi rappresentativi.

Ecco un altro nichel in legno da una città in Kansas, rilasciato il giunto—e dallo stesso costruttore, sembra che—come la Neewollah in legno nichel. (Anche se alla data di scadenza del 2 luglio 1957, rende molto meno di un pezzo ambizioso!)

Yes :D. I keep only a tiny sample of wooden nickels in my collection (there are many tens of thousands of types, as you can imagine!), but I’ll be happy to show you a few representative types.

Here is another wooden nickel from a town in Kansas, issued about the time—and by the same manufacturer, it looks—as the Neewollah wooden nickel. (Though its expiration date of July 2, 1957 makes it a much less ambitious piece!)

Note the appearance—very common on wooden nickels because of their 1930’s origin—of the buffalo reverse of the U.S. 5-cent “nickel” coined from 1913-1938:

Contemporaneo britannico dell'americano “Five e Dime ” era “di Sixpenny Store.”) E poi, dopo che l'inflazione aveva ridotto l'acquisto potenza di un nichelino, quello che era stato definito un “Five e Dime” è stato chiamato a volte anche un ”Dime Store.”

I don’t know whether “Bee Discount” was a “Five and Dime,” but it would not surprise me. (Five = 5-cent coin/nickel; Dime = 10-cent coin. A British contemporary of the American “Five and Dime” was “The Sixpenny Store.”) And later, after inflation had reduced the buying power of a nickel, what had been called a “Five and Dime” was sometimes also called a “Dime Store.”

Il inverso (lato indiano) della moneta è stato progettato da Laura Gardin Fraser, la moglie dell'uomo che progettato il nichel Capo Indiano/Buffalo del 1913-1938 (e il obverse di questo stesso dollaro metà Oregon Trail).

Signora Fraser fatto un lavoro spettacolare su indiani, in mia parere, e suo lavoro, della moneta anche dice un po' della “controparte” della marcia americana in Occidente.

The reverse (Indian side) of the coin was designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, the wife of the man who designed the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel of 1913-1938 (and the obverse of this same Oregon Trail half dollar).

Ms. Fraser did a spectacular job on the Indian, in my opinion, and through her work, the coin also tells a little of the “other side” of the American march into the West.

Un altro, tipo sempre più popolare di nichel di legno è il rotondo ”tuit” ,“ pronounced “to it,„ ed illustrato qui:

Ho dovuto avere questo spiegato a me.

Il wordplay qui è l'idioma inglese “get around to it.„ (Per ottenere qualcosa fatta, per rifinire qualcosa; compire qualcosa, dopo fa ritardare spesso.) Ho ottenuto intorno esso. I infine ha ottenuto intorno esso. Sì, caro, otterrò intorno esso. Miele, avete ottenuto intorno esso?

Così ogni volta che stanno dando fuori questi “tuits„ ad un commercio o un'esposizione della moneta, ecc., ottengono aspettano per essere chiesti se avete ottenuto intorno esso, o debba ottenere intorno esso, ecc!

Another, increasingly popular type of wooden nickel is the round “tuit,” pronounced “to it,” and illustrated here:

I had to have this one explained to me.

The wordplay here is the English idiom “get around to it.” (To get something done, to finish something; to accomplish something, often after a delay.) I got around to it. I finally got around to it. Yes, dear, I’ll get around to it. Honey, did you get around to it?

So whenever they are giving out these “tuits” at a business or a coin show, etc., get ready to be asked whether you’ve gotten around to it, or need to get around to it, or etc!

Ho trovato parecchi nichel di legno interessanti in una ciotola ad un mercato di pulce da uno stato all'altro della strada principale. Con i nichel di legno, inoltre ho trovato questo “thaler di legno.„ Ci erano 5 più di questi “thalers„ nella ciotola, ma ho preso questo un--diverso degli altri, questo esempio sono un errore, con la stampa del obverse e la stampa l'inverso che insieme tutti da un singolo lato.

Ciò è una parte di pubblicità soltanto--“un tondo di legno„ piuttosto che un nichel di legno.

I found several interesting wooden nickels in a bowl at an Interstate highway flea market. With the wooden nickels, I also found this “wooden thaler.” There were 5 more of these “thalers” in the bowl, but I took this one—unlike the others, this example is an error, with the obverse printing and the reverse printing all together on a single side.

This is an advertising piece only--a “wooden round” rather than a wooden nickel.

Come si legge nella pagina principale del sito, i gettoni possono anche essere personalizzati con un disegno o un logo proposto dal committente (Custom imprint wooden nickels and dollars with your design and copy), di sette possibili colori (Black, Red, Blue, Green, Brown, Purple, and Orange), di due dimensioni (nickel size is 1.5 inch diameter; dollar size is 2 inch diameter, vale a dire rispettivamente di ca 38 mm o ca 51 mm) e, volendo, forati (holes available). Una tabella riporta infine il numero minimo di pezzi e i costi per le varie quantità ordinate (Item, Size, Quantity Pricing).

Oklahoma ha celebrato i relativi 50Th anniversario come stato in 1957. Come componente della relativa celebrazione di Oklahoma “semi-centennale,„ la città di Tulsa (Route 66!) ha pubblicato questo nichel di legno, che era buono per 5 cents a tutta la banca de Tulsa prima del mezzogiorno il 10 aprile 1957.

“Tulsarama„ era il nome della celebrazione grande, tenuto in giugno e “i fratelli della spazzola„ accennata su questo nichel di legno sono uomini che hanno accosentito per portare una barba di vecchio-tempo nelle settimane che portano alla celebrazione. (Barbe erano molto rare negli Stati Uniti a quel tempo.)

Il centro delle celebrazioni di “Tulsarama„ era il entombment di un'automobile nuovo 1957, che era unearthed in 2007.

Oklahoma celebrated its 50th anniversary as a state in 1957. As part of its celebration of Oklahoma’s “semi-centennial,” the city of Tulsa (on Route 66!) issued this wooden nickel, which was good for 5 cents at any Tulsa bank before noon on April 10, 1957.

“Tulsarama” was the name of the big celebration, held in June, and the “Brothers of the Brush” mentioned on this wooden nickel are men who agreed to wear an old-time beard in the weeks leading up to the celebration. (Beards were very rare in the U.S. at that time.)

The centerpiece of the “Tulsarama” celebrations was the entombment of a brand-new 1957 automobile, which was unearthed in 2007.

Fun stuff! But sad too, because the much of the celebrations of June ’57 were overshadowed by rain. A foreshadowing of sorts, for 2007.
