Le monete di Geta emesse dalla zecca di Stobi

Città della Peonia, in epoca romana, Stobi faceva parte della provincia della Macedonia (Macedonia Salutaris) e per la sua posizione era considerata un punto di notevole importanza commerciale nonché strategico dal punto di vista militare.

Livio ne parla come “oppidum civium Romanorum”. Quando Stobi ottenne il titolo di Municipium (Municipium Stobensium) ed i suoi abitanti acquisirono la cittadinanza romana (Ius Italicum) è ancora incerto. Secondo alcuni autori in epoca Augustea (Papazoglou, 1986) o sotto Vespasiano (Dusanic, 1967). La zecca non ha coniato monete nel periodo Giulio-Claudio e la produzione inizia con Vespasiano fino al periodo Severo per terminare con Elagabalo.

Le legende sono in latino. Particolarmente numerose le combinazioni delle abbreviazioni del toponimo “Municipium Stobensium” poste al rovescio.

Se paragonata a quella di Domna e di Caracalla, la produzione di Geta a Stobi è assai modesta. I nominali sono generalmente a largo modulo (26-30 mm, probabilmente tetrassaria). Le titolature di Geta sono sia da Cesare che da Augusto (ad esempio Vittoria andante a destra); queste ultime possono essere datate più accuratamente al 209-210 d.C.

Le tipologie dei rovesci di Geta a Stobi non sono molte, sostanzialmente otto, ma qualcuno di essi è abbastanza particolare.

Il tipo principale dei rovesci di Geta a Stobi è la vittoria andante che tiene una corona d’alloro con il braccio disteso ed un ramo di palma sulla spalla; prevalentemente la direzione della Vittoria e verso sinistra, meno frequente a destra o frontalmente. La tipologia secondo Vaillant ricorda la vittoria ottenuta da Settimio Severo sui generali di Pescennio Nigro a Cizico.

Accanto a questa tipologia, ne va ricordata un’altra un po’ particolare: una figura diversamente identificata dagli autori (Tyche o una figura militare, forse lo stesso Geta) stante tra due ninfe fluviali, l’Axios (Vadar) e l’Erigon (Tserna). Stobi sorgeva infatti alla confluenza dei due fiumi e la figura posta al centro di essi, sollevata, ne esalta l’importanza per la città.

Una personificazione ibrida, ossia con una combinazione di diversi attribuiti, è ritratta invece sul rovescio di una emissione catalogata da Josifovski al n. 279. La Vittoria infatti porta anche attributi di Isis (fior di loto sul capo), Tyche/Fortuna (Cornucopia) e Demetra (torcia con un serpente avvolto attorno alla base).
