colchesterhunter Inviato 7 Agosto, 2007 #1 Inviato 7 Agosto, 2007 Hi Guys, Don't speak Italian but I need your help in ID'ing some Venetian silver coins please found over here in England. I live near the Port of Harwich so these are Venetian sailor drops. I have been trying to get hold of a good book but cannot find one on Venetian silver coins, can you suggest a good one ? Any help in ID'ing these coin would be great. Cita
rob Inviato 8 Agosto, 2007 #2 Inviato 8 Agosto, 2007 Hi colchesterhunter and welcome to this forum. The standard reference book is Paolucci, Le monete dei dogi di Venezia - The coinage of the doges of Venice. Text in Italian and English. I did some research on the venecian soldini found in the UK, and most of them are from the doges: Antonio Venier (1382-1400) Michele Steno (1400-1413) Agostino Barbarigo (1499-1503) Leonardo Loredan (1501-1521) Assuming these coins fall within the same timeframe the type you posted is either from Antonio Venier or Michele Steno. The inscription on the obverse includes the name of the doge: Antonio Venier: +ANTO VEN ERIO DUX Michele Steno: +MIChAEL STEN'DUX An example of UK finds in a web find database Same type but later doge: Tommaso Mocenigo (1414-1423): +TOMMOCE NIGODUX in my experience rarely if ever found in the UK Anyway: Coin No. 1: Antonio Venier Coin No. 2: The letter "D" reminds me of a similar one I have from A. Venier? Coin No. 3: Antonio Venier? Coin No. 4: Michele Steno? Cita

I'm not sure you'd use it that much, honestly I'd rather do some web research instead.www.coinarchives.com is a rather good place to start from. :) Cheers Rob Cita
