Coins on display with one in gloved hand

Dorset couple find 17th-century treasure hoard while renovating kitchen

‘Poorton coin hoard’, discovered under floor by Betty and Robert Fooks, expected to fetch £35,000 at auction

Renovating a kitchen can be expensive but a couple from Dorset have found it to be a lucrative exercise after they discovered more than 1,000 17th-century coins hidden under the floor.

Betty and Robert Fooks were removing the kitchen’s concrete floor to create more ceiling height at their farmhouse in Dorset when Robert, an agricultural engineer, discovered a smashed glazed pottery bowl full of 400-year-old coins.

The couple reported it to the local finds liaison officer and it was sent to the British Museum for cleaning and identification. The coins, known as the Poorton hoard, are coming up for sale at Duke’s auctioneers in Dorchester, Dorset, and are expected to fetch about £35,000.

Betty Fooks, an NHS health visitor, said: “It is a 400-year-old house so there was lots of work to do. We were taking all the floors and ceilings out and took it back to its stone walls. We decided to lower the ground floor to give us more ceiling height.

“One evening, I was with the children and my husband was digging with a pick axe when he called to say they’ve found something. He put all the coins in a bucket. If we hadn’t lowered the floor, they would still be hidden there. I presume the person intended to retrieve them but never got the chance.”

This hoard, discovered in October 2019, contains James I and Charles I gold coins, silver half crowns, shillings and sixpences; Elizabeth I and Philip and Mary silver shillings and sixpences.

Julian Smith, specialist at Duke’s auctioneers, said: “The cottage is situated in a small hamlet in west Dorset, and is a 17th century long-house. The property was purchased by the current owners in 2019 and they started an extensive renovation project.

“The modern concrete floor was removed and the floor dug down by nearly 2ft to provide greater height to the downstairs of the property. In some areas there were old flagstones under the concrete but the area the coins were found was bare earth.

“The coins have been with the British Museum for identification and cleaning, and they feel the coins were deposited on one occasion.”

The sale takes place on 23 April.

A UK couple's home renovation project turned into a profitable venture when they discovered a $43,000 treasure trove under their kitchen floor.

Robert and Betty Fooks were renovating their farmhouse in southern England when they found a valuable collection of 17th-century coins concealed beneath their kitchen.Fooks' South Poorton Farm is a 17th-century cottage located in a small hamlet in West Dorset. The couple purchased the long house in 2019 and removed the modern concrete floor during their extensive renovation. The coins were discovered while digging down two feet to expand the downstairs area. The discovery is the latest in historic and valuable discoveries made accidentally in people's backyards, basements, underfloors, behind walls, and in attics, and evidence that your home could be hiding an amazing secret.Betty Fooks, an NHS health visitor, told the Guardian: "It is a 400-year-old house, so there was lots of work to do. Historical coin hoard found buried under Dorset cottage

Robert and Becky Fooks found the coins under the floor of their new cottage

A buried hoard of coins dating to the 16th and 17th Centuries has been found during renovation work on a cottage.

The cache of more than 1,000 gold and silver coins was discovered under an earth floor at South Poorton, Dorset.

One of the property's new owners, Robert Fooks, was digging with a pickaxe by torchlight when he found the trove in a pottery bowl.

Auctioneers hope to sell the collection for between £15,000 and £30,000.

Mr Fooks' wife Becky said her husband was spending evenings in the cottage after work to increase the height of the room and install underfloor heating before they moved in.

She said: "He came across a mass of coins covered in mud and put them in a bucket.

"He didn't stop and study them. He's a worker - when he's intent on something he cracks on."

Mrs Fooks said it was only the following day that she examined the coins and realised how old they were.

"You can clearly see the date. Some of the gold coins were easy to read, really clean," she said.

Auctioneers have valued the collection at more than £15,000

The hoard, discovered in October 2019, was returned to the couple this year after expert analysis and legal work.

The British Museum guessed they were deposited early in the English Civil War (1642-51) by a landowner trying to keep his wealth safe.

The collection, including James I and Charles I gold coins and Elizabeth I silver shillings, is being sold by Duke's Auctions in Dorchester on Tuesday.

Mrs Fooks said the property's previous owners came close to finding the hoard.

She said: "They had removed the flooring on top of the earth and stopped work. The coins were about 10 inches (25cm) further down.

Grazie mille.
