Early Eastern denarii of Septimius Severus

I am new here but have been collecting for quite a long time. I have a few collections but my passion is the coinage of the eastern mints of Septimius Severus. ARe there any other collectors of these issues here that would be willing to share examples from their collections?

I primarily focus on "Emesa" and the IMP II and early IMP VIII issues from "Laodicea-ad-Mare.

Thank you for sharing.

I do not generally focus on these later issues but have gathered several over the years.

Here are a couple of the IMP VIIII issue.

Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII, laureate head right
Rev:– P M TR P V COS II P P, Sol standing left, raising right hand, holding whip in left
Laodicea-ad-mare mint. A.D. 198

Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII, Laureate head right

Shortly after this comes a small issue which appears to only occur from a single obverse die. O am able to share all three known reverse types:-

Obv:– L SEP SEVERVS PER AVG PIV IMP XI PAR P M, laureate head right
Rev:– SALVTI AVGG, Salus seated left feeding snake coiled around altar
Eastern mint. A.D. 198

It is also worth watching out for scarce examples of either the cuirassed or draped and cuirassed busts. These are quite unusual in the series.

Obv:– L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind
Rev:– AEQVITA-TI AVGG, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia
Minted in Laodicea ad Mare. A.D. 201

Same dies as Arnold lot 5 and Barry Murphy SEV-169.

My main focus is however on the earlier issues. I will share a very small sample.

The odd issues between the "AVG" issue and the large "COS II" issue.

and the relatively common "COS I" issue

RI_064hk_img.jpg

Obv:- IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right

Eastern COS II mint (RIC - Emesa). A.D. 193 - 195
References:- BMCRE -. RSC - RIC -.

2.74 g, 17.38 mm. 180 degree

This reverse type should come with VICTOR AVG or VICT AVG. VENER VICT and variations (VICTR, VICTOR etc.) turn up on Venus types of Domna, which we so rarely seen muled with obverses of Septimius Severus but I have never seen this odd mixing.

Along side this "COS II" issue there are several dies that have a style that is not consistent with the bulk of the "COS II" issue and seems more stylistically aligned with the style of the "IMP II" issue. I have a sub-collection that focusses in on this particular sub-series. I am attempting to find reverse die matches into other series that will help provide more information on these coins.

I have identified nine obverse dies that fit into this sub-series. I have several reverse dies combined with many of these obverse dies.
