LAODICEA (Λαοδίκεια, Λαοδικία, Λαωδικία, ecc.; Laodicea, Laodicia, Laudicea, ecc.; ἐπὶ Λύκῳ, περὶ τὸν Λύκον, ἀπὸ Λύκον ecc.) Città della Frigia fondata sul luogo della più antica Diospolis o Rhoas (Plin., Nat. hist., v, 29) da Antioco II in onore di sua moglie (prima del 253 a. C., anno del divorzio tra i due). Nel 220 a. C. Achaeus, ribellatosi contro Antioco III, si proclamò re nella città (Polyb., v, 57, 5). Durante il II sec. dovette appartenere al regno di Pergamo, fece poi parte della provincia romana di Asia, seppure con una certa autonomia. Danneggiata spesso da terremoti, fu distrutta sotto Nerone (Tac., Ann., xiv, 27). Risorta, ebbe vita molto fiorente in età imperiale; in essa nacquero alcuni filosofi della seconda sofistica. Importante sede cristiana (è ricordata come una delle sette città dell'Asia), decadde in età bizantina e fu abbandonata nel XII sec. con l'invasione turca. Sorta in una fertile pianura, la città era ricca di lana, che tessuta in tappeti e stoffe era esportata in tutto l'impero (Strabo, 778); nell'Apocalisse (iii, 17) il vescovo di L. (come personificazione della città) afferma: πλούσιός εἰμι καὶ πεπλούτεκα καὶ οὐδενὸς χρείαν ἔχω (sono ricco e prospero e non ho bisogno di nulla).

La divinità principale della città era Zeus, rappresentato sulle monete. Le rovine di L. sono su una collina alta m 304, a 5 km dalla città di Denizli. Gli avanzi più notevoli (che non sono mai stati oggetto di una regolare campagna di scavo), consistono nelle rovine di due teatri (il primo a N-E con una circonferenza di 250 m; il secondo a N con la circonferenza di 150 m), di uno stadio (m 350 × 6o) dedicato all'imperatore Vespasiano, di un ginnasio, di un acquedotto. Quest'ultimo è caratteristico perché le tubature dell'acqua (a causa della forte pendenza del terreno che rischiava di farle scoppiare) sono inserite in blocchi calcarei che ne aumentano la resistenza.

Numerose sculture decorative scoperte a L. sono conservate nei musei di Denizli e di Smirne.

Zeus Lydios

The Zeus who was worshipped at Laodicea was the Hellenised form of the old native god, Men. Men had been the king and father of his people. When the new seat of Hellenic civilisation and speech was founded in the valley, the people continued to worship the god whose power was known to be supreme in the district, but they imparted to him something of their own character and identified him with their own god Zeus. Thus in Sardis and elsewhere the native god became Zeus Lydios, "the Zeus whom the Lydians worship"; and the same impersonation in outward appearance was worshipped at Laodicea, though with a different name in place of Lydios. The Laodicean god was sometimes called Aseis, perhaps a Semitic word meaning "powerful." If that be so, it would imply that a body of settlers from Syria were brought into the new city at its foundation, and that they had imparted an element of their own character to the god who was worshipped in common by the citizens generally.

L’iscrizione al dritto per esteso è Αὐτοκ(ράτωρ) Κ(αῖσαρ) Μ(ᾶρκος) Ἰούλι(ος) Φίλιππος Σεβ(αστός), che si traduce in “Imperatore Cesare Marco Giulio Filippo Augusto”.

L’iscrizione al rovescio per esteso è Ἀντιοχέων μητρο(πόλεως) κολων(ίας) δʹ ἐ(παρχιῶν) s(enatus) c(onsulto), che si traduce in “Degli Antiocheni, colonia metropolitana, delle 4 eparchie, per decreto del Senato”.

Bronzo di Nerone (Sardi, Lidia), magistrato Claudio Tiberio Mnaseas, che raffigura al rovescio Zeus Lydios in piedi, con aquila nella mano destra e lungo scettro nella sinistra. Il nome del magistrato è al nominativo nonostante la preposizione ЄΠI (“sotto...”) e la legenda è su una linea circolare d’appoggio.

ЄΠI TI MNACЄA CAPΔIANΩN Zeus Lydios standing left, holding eagle in right hand and long scepter with left. RPC I 3007 var. (MNACЄOY). A very attractive specimen with a beautiful portrait and a glossy black patina. Minor cleaning scratches, otherwise, about extremely fine.
This is an unusual reverse as it gives the name of the magistrate in the nominative, despite the preposition ЄΠI ('under...'). Another interesting aspect of the reverse die is the prominent circular help line on top of the lettering.

RPC III 2338; OIN, XIV.28 (this coin). Earthen brown patina. VF. Very rare, only four known to RPC. The only example in CoinArchives sold in October 2021 (Leu 8, lot 190 which hammered for 3.400 CHF).

Bronzetto dall’asta Savoca Blue 251, emissione pseudo-autonoma nel periodo 50-250 d. C. a Palmira, capitale dell’Impero Palmireno.

PALMYRENE. Palmyra. Pseudo-autonomous issue, circa 2nd-3rd c. AD. Ae (bronze, 0.54 g, 10 mm). Helmeted head of Athena. Rev. Winged caduceus between two crossed cornucopiae.

Anche se la Siria era divenuta provincia romana nel 64 a. C., pare che Palmira abbia mantenuto una certa autonomia e la città era tanto ricca che, nel 41 a. C., Marco Antonio cercò di occuparla per saccheggiarla, ma fallì nel tentativo. In seguito Palmira fu annessa ufficialmente alla provincia romana di Siria verso il 19 d. C., durante il regno di Tiberio (14-37), e con Nerone (54-68) fu integrata nella provincia.

Per questo motivo ho collocato il bronzo nelle Provinciali Romane invece che tra le Imperiali Romane

Der Gouverneur Quintus Tullius Maximus stammte aus Libyen. Unter Antoninus Pius war er Kommandeur der Legio VII Gemina Felix im spanischen Legio/León. Er ging dort seiner Jagdleidenschaft nach und errichtete einen Weihealtar für Diana mit einem Gedicht, das sein Jagdglück und seine literarischen Fähigkeiten unter Beweis stellt (CIL II 2660). Unter Marc Aurel und Lucius Verus, also zwischen 163-169, war er als Legatus Augustorum pro praetore Gouverneur der Provinz Thracia (B.E. Thomasson, Laterculi praesidum I, Göteborg1984, 166 Nr. 30). Wie die Rückseiten-Legende dieser Münze aus Philippopolis jetzt zeigt, wurde er während seiner Statthalterschaft zum Suffektconsul gewählt (ΑΠΟΔ ΥΠΑΤ[ΟΥ]= consulis designati). Vgl. dazu R. Münsterberg, Verkannte Titel auf griechischen Münzen, ÖJH 1915, Beibl. Sp. 307-324, bes. Sp. 313). Allem Anschein nach war Tullius Maximus auch ein bedeutender Redner, der u.a. mit dem berühmten kleinasiatischen Rhetor Aelius Aristides befreundet war (Groag, RE VII A 2, s.v.Tullius 44, 1315 f.).
Quintus Tullius Maximus originated from Libya. During the reign of Antoninus Pius he commanded the legio VII Gemina Felix stationed in Legio (modern León, Spain). There, he indulged his passions of hunting and errected an altar in honour of Diana; a poem written on this altar, proves his successful huntings and his abilities in composing poems (CIL II 2660). Under Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, that is between 163-169, as a legatus Augusti pro praetore he governed the province of Thracia (B.E. Thomasson, Laterculi praesidum I, Göteborg 1984, 166 Nr. 30). As the reverse-legend of this coin proves he was elected consul suffectus during this period, i.e. a consul who in the course of the year replaced one of the ordinary consuls (ΑΠΟΔ ΥΠΑΤ[ΟΥ]= consulis designati; cf. R. Münsterberg, Verkannte Titel auf griechischen Münzen, ÖJH 1915, Beibl. Sp. 307-324, esp. Sp. 313). By all appearances, Tullius Maximus was a famous orator and a close friend of the famous orator Aelius Aristides (Groag, RE VII A 2, s.v. Tullius 44, 1315 f.).
