Sesterzio "serrato"

Buonasera a tutti, aggiungo le foto di un denario repubblicano serrato trovato casualmente su Ebay durante alcune ricerche e andato venduto 1 - 2 giorni fa. Per me merita un posto in questa discussione.

Complimenti per gli approfonditissimi interventi e per lo splendido corredo fotografico che ci ha proposto @Massenzio. Premetto che non sono un collezionista di monetazione classica, ma siccome mi affascina tutto ciò che è numismatica non posso trattenermi dal leggere ogni topic, pertanto se dirò una castroneria abbiate pietà di me. 

Azzardo una teoria: un uso votivo? Se fossero state trafugate avendo perso il loro valore di valuta sarebbero state inutilozzabili, ma da lavorate avrebbero comunque mantenuto la loro identità di offerta economica alla divinità.

Ma... forse non ho capito e mi chiedo, se fatti per quell'uso, non sarebbe stato logico e facile, dopo averli "stellati", forarli al centro, per infilarvi un semplice bastoncino e farli girare sulla pasta come una delle rotelle che uso quando preparo i ravioli ? E i "denti", non li avrebbero fatti più piccoli e serrati e soprattutto affilati per essere taglienti? Sarebbe bastato un qualsiasi altro tondino di metallo. Invece con quello spessore, come il sesterzio che ho postato, non so che taglio avrebbero potuto ottenere. Resto invece convinto che quel lavoro diciamo pure "di fino", fatto rispettando le simmetrie e soprattutto lasciando bene centrate le immagini sia al D/ che al R/, dovesse rendere l'oggetto non solo utile a qualcosa, ma anche esteticamente suggestivo. A molti ritratti in particolare, come a quelli che ha postato @Massenzio per esempio, sembra che volutamente e anzi artisticamente si sia voluta dare una cornice.

Confesso che farne una collezione non mi spiacerebbe affatto. E sembra che comunque riscuotano un certo interesse: la maiorina col cristogramma che ha postato @Xenon97 il 28 aprile, 

partita da un prezzo di pochi euro, è stata aggiudicata, se non erro, a 180.

Buonasera, apro in ritardo e l'asta purtroppo è chiusa, ma sarei stato interessato a vedere com'era fatto quel sesterzio. Ricordi per caso se una delle facce fosse più o meno liscia rispetto all'altra?

Zeugitana, Carthage. Time of the Third Punic War, c. 149-146 BC. Gold Serrate 2/5 Shekel (3.0g). Head of Tanit, grain-wreathed, left, wearing single pendant earring. Reverse: Horse walking right; pellet before its chest. Jenkins & Lewis group XVIII, 506 var. (pellet below leg); SNG Cop 401 var (pellet below leg). Well struck and unusually well centered. Very rare. Choice Very Fine. .

H.R. Baldus ("Ein 146 v. Chr. verbrannter Geldbörseninhalt aus Karthago," Chiron 33 [2003]) put forth the compelling argument that coins of this serrated issue were struck from melted jewelry contributed in the summer of 149 BC by the women of Carthage after the Roman siege of their city had begun. The ancient Greek historian Diodorus Siculus tells us that "in preparation of the coming siege [of Carthage]…women shave off their hair to be woven into cords for use in catapults and contribute their gold jewelry to help finance the war effort" (Diodorus Sicilus 32.9).

H. R. Baldus ha avanzato l’ipotesi che le monete di questa emissione seghettata siano state coniate dalla gioielleria fusa donata nell'estate del 149 a. C. dalle donne cartaginesi dopo l’inizio dell'assedio romano alla loro città. Il vecchio storico greco Diodoro Siculo ci narra che "in preparazione dell'imminente assedio [di Cartagine]....le donne si depilano i capelli per essere intrecciati in corde da utilizzare nelle catapulte e contribuiscono con i loro gioielli d'oro a finanziare lo sforzo bellico" (Diodoro Sicilio 32,9).

Head of Tanit left, wearing wreath of grain ears, single-pendant earring, and necklace / Horse stepping to right; pellet below. Unpublished, but cf. Jenkins & Lewis Group XVIII, 503 and MAA 97d, for 2/5 shekels of this issue. Good VF, a few minor marks. Apparently unique denomination for issue.

Previously, only 2/5 shekels were known for this issue. Jenkins & Lewis thought these fractions equated to 4/5 shekels (p. 54), but later Jenkins (cf. SNG Copenhagen 401–2) and Baldus (in Chiron 33 -- see following lot) determined that they were, in fact, 2/5 shekels. The present coin is the first full shekel known for this issue.

Buonasera, splendidi serrati aurei e splendida breve storia delle donne Cartaginesi, dei loro gioielli e dei loro capelli, una vera chicca!!

Certo quando ho postato il mio Adriano non avrei mai immaginato che il fenomeno fosse stato così diffuso, sia pure per motivazioni tanto diverse, né che avrei visto sfilare in passerella tante di queste incredibili modelle stellate.

Un evento credo esclusivo di questo Forum. Un vero spettacolo.
