Zeus su una dramma di Kierion, Tessaglia (Triton XV).

201898100_DrammaunicumTritonXV89000102.jpg.6262222401339272dc201c0af496b32a.jpg

THESSALY, Kierion. Mid 3rd century BC. AR Drachm (19mm, 5.11 g, 12h). Laureate and bearded head of Zeus to r. / [ΚΙ]ΕΡΙΕΙ[ΩΝ] r. down, youthful Asklepios, naked to the waist, seated l. on rocks, holding long sceptre in his l. hand and resting his r. on his upraised r. knee; to l., tree entwined by a serpent. Unpublished, unknown and apparently unique. Near VF, lightly toned but surfaces very crystallized. The dies appear to be from the same hand that crafted the dies for the Nomos 4 didrachm (lot 1071).

Said to have been found on the site of ancient Kierion.

The importance of this coin lies in that we now have confirmation that Kierion issued drachms to match its rare didrachms about which there were doubts in the past that they were minted in Thessaly and not in Asia Minor. These issues, surely struck in very limited quantities, are analogous to the Philippopolis range of staters to obols (see Nomos 4, lots 1040 to 1042 and lot 69 above) but, judging from the style and fabric, should be dated almost a century later. Philippopolis was able to use the services of a master engraver, and a supremely gifted one at that whereas, one hundred years later, the mint-master and the city council of Kierion must have found out that the choices they had were very limited and certainly not up to the artistic standard of the mid 4th century BC. The superbly executed Kierion hemidrachm (see Nomos 4, 1067) was obviously struck several decades earlier and therefore the master engraver who created its dies was in all likelihood not available anymore to offer his services.

Thessaly, Magnetes Æ22. 2nd century BC. Head of Zeus right / The centaur Chiron right, holding branch over shoulder. Rogers 341a; BCD -. 8.41g, 22mm, 11h.
Dark green patina, Good Very Fine.

Chiron was held to be the superlative centaur amongst his brethren, as he was called as the "wisest and justest of all the centaurs" (Homer, Iliad 11.831). Throughout Greek mythology, there were many heroes who were trained by Chiron, including Achilles, Ajax, Asklepios, Herakles, Jason, Perseus and Theseus.

Poseidone su un tetradramma di Demetrio I Poliorcete (CNG Coin Shop).

2009079938_Poseidone954932.jpg.9d0f32dede4b9372a704e04e237b53c3.jpg

KINGS of MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes. 306-283 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 17.42 g, 6h). Amphipolis mint. Struck circa 291–290 BC. Diademed and horned head right / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΔHMHTPIOY, Poseidon Pelagaios seated left on rock, holding aphlaston and trident; monograms to inner left and right. Unpublished in the standard references with this combination of monograms, but for the obverse die see Newell Series IV, Group B, die XCIX. Near EF, toned.

Newell’s Series IV is composed of two groups: Group A with a different monogram of the principal official in the left reverse field and Group B with the monogram as on the current coin in the left reverse field. Although quite different in general form, Newell suspected the left–field monograms of Groups A and B were in fact composed of similar letters and likely represented the same official’s name, which he tentatively suggested may have been Philemon. With great prescience, in 1927 Newell wrote (p. 108) that the combination of monograms found on our coin, bridging his Groups A and B, would eventually turn up.

Testa di Zeus su un tricalkon della Tessaglia (nomos 4)

623159226_Zeusb-coins-of-thessaly-the-bcd-47296-XL.jpg.ccc52290ce9e0c0e54eda09dacadd0e4.jpg

Lot 1008. Coins of Thessaly, the BCD Collection
Thessalian League
Circa 361-360 BC. Trichalkon (Bronze, 18mm, 5.67 g 9). Head of Zeus to right, wearing oak wreath. Rev. PETQ - ALWN Forepart of prancing horse to right, emerging from a rock; below, trident head to right. Franke 1970, fig. 20 var. Rogers 2 = Traité IV 598, pl. CCXCIII, 20. Extremely rare, probably the finest known example. A coin of splendid Classical style, with a fine, glossy black patina. Some minor marks and pits on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine. This is surely the rarest bronze coin issued by the Thessalian League: it was issued at a time when coinage was being produced all over Greece, often in rather small numbers purely as a way of proclaiming the issuing state’s independence. This was certainly true for many cities in the Peloponnesos beginning in the later 360s: they not only produced bronzes and small silver fractions, often beautifully designed out of civic pride, but also some exceptional staters. It would not at all be surprising if one day some League silver dating to this period would appear: as with the contemporary issues of the Achaian League, it would have been produced in extremely small numbers.

A note from BCD: The reverse of this coin, practically impossible to find in this state, could not be more eloquent.Skyphios is seen bursting wildly from the rock with his head tossed up high, an image that does justice to the legend that he was the father of all horses. Below, Poseidon’s elaborate trident alludes to the creation of Thessaly when the god struck with it the land between the mountains of Olympos and Ossa and created a channel so that the waters that were inundating the plain could escape.

Zeus è senza dubbio quello dei tre raffigurato con maggior frequenza e uno dei ritratti più suggestivi si trova su questo rarissimo statere di Alessandro il Molosso, lo zio materno di Alessandro Magno.

Triton XIX, Lot: 110. Estimate $100000. Sold for $95000.

Atti del I convegno del centro internazionale di studi numismatici, Napoli 5-8 Aprile 1967 (Rome, 1969), pl. XI, 7 = Vlasto, Or, pl. IE, 16 = ACGC 686 = Traité IV 329 = BMC 1; Hunterian 1. Good VF, light marks in fields, a few edge bumps. Extremely rare, one of four known, and the only piece not in a public collection.

Ex J. William Middendorf II Collection (Christie’s New York, 30 November 1990), lot 42; Classical Numismatic Auctions 1 (1 May 1987), lot 46.

This coin is the only genuine stater of Alexander the Molossian to have been offered for sale over the past 75 years; the Leu 52 piece was withdrawn as a modern forgery.

Alexander the Molossian, in 334 BC, was invited by Tarentum to defend the city against the Samnites, Brettii, and Lucani of central Italy. While Alexander accepted their appeal, the true purpose for his intervention was to extend his dominion in the West just as his namesake, the king of Macedon, was establishing a great empire in the East. After initial successes, his career was abruptly terminated in 330 BC beneath the walls of Pandosia where he perished in battle against the Bruttians, much to the relief of the Tarentine Republic. Alexander honored Zeus of Dodona, the central deity of the Molossians, on his coins. The sanctuary of Zeus Naïos at Dodona was reputed to be the oldest Greek oracle, and was known to Homer.
