Tetradramma suberato di Lisimaco imitazione di un’emissione di Lampsaco (obolos 11).

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachn (Silver, plated, 27.5 mm, 12.62 g, 1 h), c. 250-200 or later, imitating a Lampsakos issue of, c. 297-281. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated to left on throne, leaning her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike, crowning the king's name, in her right; behind, transverse spear; inner left, ΔΞ monogram; in exergue, crescent with points to left. Thompson 399. Müller 49. A very interesting, toned and well centered example. Good very fine.

Here we have a perfectly plated tetradrachm distinguished from the official issues only by its weight and, maybe, by its style. No traces of the copper core are apparent: only after careful observation can some be noted in the eye. The style of the portrait, which fits better in the second half of the 3rd century and on into the 2nd, indicates that it was produced around that time, but with based on a lifetime prototype dating to 297-281 as shown by the reverse. Thus, the ancient forger paired an "up-to-date" contemporary and floridly Hellenistic-style obverse with an "antique" reverse. The wear shows us that it circulated unnoticed for quite a while before it was lost. Perhaps its last owner discovered that something was amiss and got rid of it? A very interesting coin, indeed.

Imitazione celtica di un tetradramma di Alessandro Magno (Obolos 11).

552036777_80.Obolos114602347l.thumb.jpg.4fd455caddd4975e68bb6b82c81181c3.jpg

CELTIC, Eastern Europe. Imitating Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 14.04 g, 11 h), Eastern Europe imitation, c. 250 BC. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΕΑΝΔΟΡΟΥ (sic!) Zeus seated left on high-backed throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing right with closed wings; in field to left, IM; below throne, M. Cf. Price B35 & Lanz 875-7. A very interesting imitation struck on good silver. Good very fine.

The style of the portrait is quite close to the mid-3rd century portraits of Alexander the Great. On the other hand the Zeus on the obverse is less carefully engraved and looks almost feminine.

Imitazione celtica contemporanea di una dramma di Filippo III Arrideo (Obolos 11).

1815497190_81.Obolos114602462l.thumb.jpg.5d529dbe3f164b3e91fa76437fcc5f0e.jpg

KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios, 323-317 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 4.18 g, 12 h), a contemporary Celtic imitation, Magnesia, c. 323-319. Head of youthful Herakles in lion's skin headdress to right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on throne, holding eagle on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; to left, AT monogram. Price P56 (for prototype). Same obverse die as Roma e-sale 1, 128. Quite different in style from the official issues, this coin is probably, very close to the prototype, a Celtic imitation struck around the end of the century. Very fine.
