1916 British half-penny

In occasione del centenario della battaglia della Somme, una half-penny britannico di quell'anno terribile, 1916.

 

Romanziere William Bradford Huie ha scritto: "Ma la Gran Bretagna di Geoffrey Barham aveva perso troppo tanto...Quando un po' di terra perde [quasi 20.000] della sua gioventù, morti tra alba e al tramonto, come Gran Bretagna ha fatto alle Somme, sanguina troppo."

 

Vigilia di Capodanno, 1916, le truppe britanniche nelle trincee sporco cantavano Auld Lang Syne, o meglio, preso in prestito la melodia e cantato invece il continuo ritornello: "Siamo qui perché siamo qui perché siamo qui perché siamo qui perché siamo qui perché siamo..." E se sono stati fortunati hanno dormito per qualche ora interrotto in seguito, e se sono stati fortunati si svegliarono per un giorno di Capodanno, 1917.

 

Questo particolare mezzo di 1916-penny non ha visto molto manipolazione. Le sue superfici difficilmente sono indossate a tutti. Evocativo, in un certo senso, di For the Fallen, di Laurence Binyon: "essi devono non invecchiare, come noi che sono lasciati invecchiare. Età non sono stanchi di loro, né condannano gli anni. Al calar del sole e la mattina, ci ricorderemo loro."

Naturalmente si può dire circa la stessa cosa usando un 1916 francese 5 cenime, un tedesco 1916 2-pfennig, un 1916 russo 1-kopek, un austriaco 1916 1-heller o un 1916 Italiano 2-centesimi. Così bene perché è 2016, e perché uomini e donne in tutti i paesi hanno tali brevi memorie,—e vi prego di scusare la lingua—ma damn, damn, and damn it anyway.

On the centennial of the Battle of the Somme, a British half-penny of that terrible year, 1916.

 

Novelist William Bradford Huie wrote: “But the Britain of Geoffrey Barham had lost too much...When a little land loses [nearly 20,000] of its youth, dead between dawn and dusk, as Britain did at the Somme, it bleeds too much.”

 

On New Year’s Eve, 1916, British troops in the dirt trenches sang Auld Lang Syne, or rather, borrowed the tune and sang instead the continuous refrain: “We’re here because we’re here because we’re here because we’re here because we’re here because we’re....” And if they were lucky they slept for a few interrupted hours afterward, and if they were lucky they awoke to a New Year’s Day, 1917.

 

This particular 1916 half-penny has not seen much handling. Its surfaces are hardly worn at all. Evocative, in a way, of Laurence Binyon’s For the Fallen: “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them.”

Of course you can say approximately the same thing using a 1916 French 5-centime, a 1916 German 2-pfennig, a 1916 Russian 1-kopek, a 1916 Austrian 1-heller, or a 1916 Italian 2-centesimi. So because it’s 2016, and because men and women in every country have such short memories, well—and please excuse the language—but damn, damn, and damn it anyway.
