ROMAN GOLD COINS FROM THE COLLECTION OF A PERFECTIONIST
Geta Caesar, 198-209
Estimate: CHF 50'000.00
Aureus (Gold, 7.14 g 7), Rome, 207.
Obverse: P SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Geta to left.
Reverse: PONTIF COS Bacchus, with his panther at his feet, and Ariadne both seated to right with a herm behind them; around them, Silenus, a satyr, a double-flute player and two maenads.
Rarity: Of the greatest rarity, one of four known examples.
References: Biaggi 1260. BMC p. 243, *. C. –. Hill 863. Kent/Hirmer 392 (this coin). LIMC I, sv. Dionysos/Bacchus 202 (this coin). RIC 33. Sear II 7156.
Condition: Attractively toned and with a superb portrait. Minor scratch on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.
Estimate: 45000 – 50000.–
Provenance: From the collection of E. von Schulthess, Hess-Leu 17, 23 March 1961, 274, and very probably from the Karnak Hoard of 1901.
Note: With one of the most remarkable reverses ever to appear on a Roman gold coin, this iconographically distinctive aureus is special in every way. It was produced in very small numbers, as a special presentation donative to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Severus and the tenth of Caracalla (all the coins known were struck from the same dies: 1, Bachofen von Echt 1766; 2, Biaggi 1260; 3, Evans, Naville III, 1922, 102 – that piece sold for 5750.– Fr., and of all the aurei in that sale, including one of Pescennius Niger, only Evans’ Balbinus sold for more; 4, this coin). The scene on the reverse that of the marriage of Bacchus and Ariadne, is also known from Roman paintings gems and sculpture, and was chosen because Bacchus was Geta’s patron (as Hercules was Caracalla’s).

The Roman Empire
Hadrian, 117 – 138. Sestertius 134-138, Æ 26.66 g. HADRIANVS – AVG COS III P P Bareheaded and draped bust r. Rev. EXERCITVS Hadrian on horseback r., haranguing three soldiers, of which the first holds an aquila and the other two, standards. In exergue, DACICVS / S C. C 571. BMC p. 499, 1675 note. RIC 915.
Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. An historically and important
issue, a bold portrait and a superb reverse composition. Wonderful and
almost intact green patina. Extremely fine / good extremely fine
Ex Sternberg XIV, 1984, 326; NAC 9, 1996, 867 and NAC 18, 2000, 528 sales.
This reverse of this sestertius depicts the emperor addressing the troops (adlocutio in Latin), which he did on important occasions and which finds it numismatic expression since the time of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. While on early adlocutio scenes the troops in question are often the Praetorian Guard whose support was necessary for the stable reign of an emperor, here Hadrian is shown speaking to the Dacian Army, as is indicated by the legend the exercitus dacicus and represented by three standard bearers. The one closest to the emperor is the aquilifer who carries the legionary eagle (aquila), followed by the vexillarius who carries a standard topped with a banner (vexillum), and behind him a signifer who carries a standard adorned with metal disks (the signum). While aquilifers and vexillarii marched as the focal point for entire legions, the signifer marched before the individual cohorts that composed the legion.
Dated to the period AD 134-138, the adlocutio represented on this coin must indicate an otherwise undocumented visit to the Dacian limes (frontier forts) or, at the least, an intended visit at this time. As such, it may be included as an adjunct to Hadrian's much-beloved travel series of coins depicting the provinces and cities he visited on his several tours throughout the empire. Earlier in his reign, Hadrian had reorganized the Dacian territories so recently conquered by his predecessor, Trajan, giving up to the Roxolani Sarmatians to rule as a client kingdom on behalf of Rome much of the Dacian territory that had been added to Moesia Inferior. Trajan's sweeping conquests along the Danube frontier as well as in the East had greatly extended Rome's borders, but Hadrian correctly saw the impractical nature of the additional strain this imposed on the Empire and quickly shored them.

Ex Noble Numismatics Auction Sale 81 (lot 3562).
This and several other lots in this sale come from a small collection of medals, some copied from genuine coins by Giovanni Cavino (The Paduan) an Italian medallist, contemporary with Benevenuto Cellini, who was born at Padua in 1499 or 1500. Little is known of his life and his medals were probably made at Padua where he resided until his death in 1570. He was aided by his son Vincenzo who probably continued to use his dies after his death. He is best known for his numerous imitations of Roman large-brass coins and medallions which are known as "Paduans". One hundred and twenty two of his dies are preserved at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. However the great majority of the number of medals that survive today and called "Paduans" are cast from moulds from these original die struck medals. Some of the examples described below are so good that they are barely distinguishable from genuine ancient sestertii that were used as the models for these medals. All of Cavinos original strikings are very rare, the cast medallic issues are relatively common.

PHARAONIC EGYPT. Nektanebo II.
Estimate $15000
PHARAONIC EGYPT. Nektanebo II.. 359-340 BC. AV Daric or Stater (8.21 gm). Horse prancing or rearing right, border of pellets / Pectoral (nebew, "gold"), with six pendant beads hanging from it, crossing horizontally a heart and windpipe (nefer, "good, beautiful"). Svoronos 9 var. (nebew hieroglyph on obverse also); G.K. Jenkins, "Greek coins recently acquired by the British Museum," Numismatic Chronicle 1955, p.145, 24, pl. 13; SNG Copenhagen 1. EF but unevenly struck. Very rare. ($15,000)
Nekht-har-hebi, or Nektanebo II as he was known to the Greeks, was the nephew of Pharaoh Tachos (Djedhor). Placed in command of the Egyptian army in Syria during the Satrapal Revolt, he turned his troops against his own king and took Egypt by force. In 351-350 he repelled a Persian invasion but was driven from his throne in 344-343 by a second assault. He fled Egypt and found refuge in Ethiopia and retained control of Upper Egypt for another few years. Nektanebo must have issued his gold staters for the payment of mercenaries as coinage was not yet in general use among the Egyptians. This stater reflects an Egyptian cultural revival, with the use of hieroglyphs on both the obverse and reverse. On the obverse is a prancing horse, an ancient Egyptian symbol for kingship. On the reverse, there are two hieroglyphs, a heart and a windpipe, nefer, meaning good, and a necklace, nebew, meaning gold. Thus this coin can be read as "the king's good gold."

Augustan Silver medallion. 1st century AD.
Augustan Silver medallion. Early 1st century AD. Scene depicting maenad, holding thyrsus and wearing scanty dress, and satyr playing pipes and wearing cape, opposite each other in a frenetic orgiastic dance. Everything within double dotted border. Unknown to standard references. 4.67g (Silver), 27mm. Unique and highly interesting. Edge chipped of, restored, fascinating scene, pierced, Good Very Fine. Acquired from Harlan J. Berk. This Medallion was believed by the previous owner, to be a token for aristocrats. Its purpose was to get admission to the secular games in Rome. Basically a VIP Token. However it is more likely that this 'Token' was a piece of jewellery linked to the Cult of Dionysos. The Cult of Dionysus is strongly associated with satyrs, centaurs, and sileni, maenads and its characteristic symbols are the bull, the serpent, the ivy, and the wine. The Dionysia and Lenaia festivals in Athens were dedicated to Dionysus, as well as the Phallic processions. Initiates worshipped him in the Dionysian Mysteries, which were comparable to and linked with the Orphic Mysteries, and may have influenced Gnosticism. Orpheus was said to have invented the Mysteries of Dionysus.

ROMAN & BYZANTINE COINS
Commodus, 177-192, Philippopolis. Medallion (Bimetallic (copper and orichalcum), 41mm, 60.01 g 12), Rome, January 190. M COMMODVS ANTONINVS PIVS FELIX AVG BRIT Laureate bust of Commodus to left, wearing a cuirass ornamented with a head of Medusa and with the edge of his paludamentum on his right shoulder. Rev. VOTIS FELICIBVS Harbor scene. On the right, Commodus, togate, standing left, sacrificing over a tripod altar behind which stands an attendant; at his feet, on the rocky shore, sacrificed ox to left with an omphalos patera before; at the right, Pharos of four stories; above left, within the harbor, grain ship and skiff sailing to right; center left, within the harbor, three vessels: a large grain ship to right under sail, with Serapis at the tiller; a naval galley with four rowers and two standards moving to left; and, below, a small fishing boat with a fisherman. BM Medallions 44 and pl. XXXV, 3 (for the reverse). Cohen 993 var. Gnecchi 176 and pl. 89, 6-8. Very rare. With an interesting and complex reverse, reminiscent of the Ostia issues of Nero. Tiber patina with typical roughness, otherwise , about extremely fine. From the collections of Barry Feirstein, IV, Numismatica Ars Classica 45, 2 April 2008, 133 and that of L. Benz, Lanz 94. This medallion was issued for the New Year of 190 and celebrates the relief of the famine, which plagued Rome in 189. This led to popular demonstrations against Commodus’s Praetorian Prefect Cleander: the emperor had him executed to appease the mob, but also made vows to Neptune in order to ensure that grain ships from Egypt would arrive in timely fashion. The ships’ arrival in Ostia, with Commodus making a sacrifice in honor of their safe arrival, is what is shown on the reverse of this exciting piece, which would have been designed and struck in late 189 and distributed on 1 January 190.

But the Gadarenes never forgot their origins as a foundation by the great Roman naval commander Pompey. Other coins refer specifically to the naumachia, or naval games sponsored by the city, as a festival located on the nearby Yarmuk river.

SNG Copenhagen 374 (same dies). Very rare. A well struck example with an attractive dark patina. Very minor roughness, otherwise, about extremely fine.
This interesting small bronze shows us Hector, the strongest warrior of the Trojans. It boasts the importance of Ilium as the location of the most famous of all wars, but - since Hector had been a companion of Aeneas, who is shown on the reverse of coins from the same emission (RPC online 1577) - the issue also connects the city to its Roman overlords. Rome's history of supporting Ilium goes back to at least the Roman-Syrian War of 192-188 BC, when the Greek city warmly welcomed an expeditionary force under the Scipioni that had crossed the Dardanelles on its way to combat Antiochos III. The Trojans hurried to emphasize their common heritage with the Romans and eventually received great benefits after the Scipionic victory over the Seleukids at Magnesia in 190/189.
