CYPRUS. Salamis. Menelaus (ca. 310-306 BC). AV stater (17mm, 8.33 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU★ 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. MENEΛA (partially ligate), draped bust of Aphrodite left, wearing turreted stephane, triple-pendant earring, and beaded necklace, seen from front, hair rolled along brow line and tucked under stephane, and cascading in waves behind and over shoulder / Ba (Cypriot), draped bust of Aphrodite left, wearing crown with five semi-circular plates, taenia, beaded hoop earring, and torque, seen from front, hair flowing in ringlets behind and one long curl across cheek. Babelon 640, Pl. XVII, 27 = BMC Pl. XXIV, 21 (trite). Gulbenkian -. Struck from stunningly high-relief dies of magnificent style on a gleaming flan. Breathtaking in hand. Extremely rare, with no examples in sales archives and apparently unknown as a full stater.
Menelaus was the son of Lagus and the half-brother of Ptolemy I, one of Alexander the Great's close companions. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, his vast empire was divided among his generals, leading to the Wars of the Diadochi. Ptolemy took control of Egypt and sought to expand his influence in the eastern Mediterranean, where Menelaus played a significant role.
Ptolemy aimed to secure Cyprus, an important strategic island in the eastern Mediterranean. Menelaus was entrusted with the mission to govern and maintain control over Cyprus, which was crucial for Ptolemy's ambitions of naval dominance and regional power, and proved to be an effective leader. He helped fortify the island and kept it under Ptolemaic control during the struggles with other Diadochi, particularly Antigonus I Monophthalmus and his son Demetrius Poliorcetes, who also had designs on the island.
In 306 BC, Demetrius launched an invasion of Cyprus in an effort to wrest control from Ptolemy and his brother. Menelaus, stationed on the island, commanded Ptolemy's forces and prepared to defend it. The decisive confrontation took place at the Battle of Salamis, off the coast of Cyprus. Despite Menelaus' efforts, Demetrius decisively defeated him in this naval battle. Afterward, Menelaus was forced to surrender the city of Salamis, Cyprus fell into the hands of Demetrius, and Menelaus was sent back to Egypt. This defeat was a major setback for Ptolemy's ambitions in the eastern Mediterranean, though he later regained control of Cyprus.

The figure of Herakliskos Drakonopnigon was depicted in Greek art from the first half of the 5th century BC and represents an important event in the early life of the Greek hero. The birth of Herakles, son of Zeus and Alkmene, enraged Zeus' wife Hera, who tried to kill the infant by sending two serpents to strangle the sleeping baby in his crib. The following morning, the nurse discovered Herakles playing with the serpents' lifeless bodies: he had strangled one in each hand.

Head of Nike facing slightly to right, her hair bound in ampyx, wearing single pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. Very rare and very likely the finest known example. A lustrous and absolutely magnificent piece, with a spectacularly beautiful rendering of Nike struck in exceptionally high relief. Small edge split, otherwise, virtually as struck.
Ex Leu 13, 27 May 2023, 9 and previously from a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.
The dating of this magnificent coin is somewhat debated, with suggestions ranging from 290-280 BC to a more specific date of 302 BC. The latter connects the issue with the Italian campaigns of Kleonymos, a Spartan general from the Agiad dynasty whose tyrannical character became so unbearable to his fellow citizens that they precluded him from succeeding his father, Kleomenes II (370-309 BC), on the throne. In 303/2 BC, frustrated by his exclusion, Kleonymos sailed to Italy to assist the Spartan colony of Tarentum in its struggle against the native Lucanians. Capturing the rivalling Greek city of Metapontion in 302 BC in the process, he may very well have issued this exceptionally beautiful victory issue to commemorate his short-lived success. Kleonymos would continue his career as a thuggish condottiere for the next three decades, disappearing from historical records - presumably unmissed - after his failed attempt to conquer his home town of Sparta in 272 BC.

Crispina, Aureus, 178-188, Rome, Gold, MS(63), Calicó:2377e, RIC:287
Bust of Bruttia Crispina, draped, hair in round coil at back, right., Venus, draped, seated left, holding Victory in extended right hand and sceptre in left hand; under seat, dove left., RIC III Commodus 287.
In an absolutely stunning state of preservation! To be considered as almost fdc!
This absolutely splendid aureus has been perfectly preserved over time, allowing us to admire the superb engraving of the details. There is a slight striking defect, with the grenetis on both sides largely flattened. However, this has not altered the captions or the central engravings. The portrait, depicting the empress Bruttia Crispina with her hair in a large bun at the back of her head. This hairstyle served as a model for all the women of Roman high society, who wanted to get as close as possible to the model spread by the portrait of the empress. On the reverse, a superb representation of Venus, under her epiclesis "Felix", the Lucky One, combining her attribute with the ones of the goddess Fortuna. Her representation is in perfect harmony with her attributes: she is the one who brings Victory, as shown by her outstretched hand brandishing a small Victory. Also a symbol of Love, she is associated with the dove beneath her throne. Moreover, at the end of the Republic, powerful men such as Sylla, Pompey and Caesar made themselves the goddess's favourites and protégés. Augustus took up this theme by placing his dynasty under the protection of the goddess. It would seem that imperial families have maintained this tradition of associating Venus with the protection of members of the dynasty, such as the empress here. In this case, the empress is associated with the goddess of love, the protector of the imperial family and also the bringer of victory for the emperor and, by extension, for Rome.
This magnificent portrait is the portrait of Bruttia Crispina, who married the emperor Commodus in 178, at the age of 13, until 188, when she was repudiated and exiled to the island of Capri, off the coast of present-day Italy, before being assassinated there by order of the emperor in 191.
She came from the highest nobility in Rome and was the daughter of Caius Bruttius Praesens, a Roman politician very close to the emperors who preceded Commodus. Her grandfather was consul and colleague of the emperor Antoninus Pius, which gave his family the status of a Patrician family shortly afterwards. His father was also consul in 153, before being designated proconsul of Africa in 166/167. Her father's influence and proximity to Commodus' father, Marcus Aurelius, led to this marriage. This closeness was also reflected in the fact that he accompanied the emperor on his campaign against the Marcomanni and received military honours at the end of the campaign. Shortly afterwards, in 180, he was consul for a second time, having been designated to the position in 178, at the same time as the marriage between Commodus and Crispina.
The marriage between Crispina and Commodus only lasted until 188, and no one knows why. Two explanations have been put forward, firstly that of a sterile marriage, which would have led to this exile, before she was assassinated.
The exile is also thought to have been due to the fall of Marcus Aurelius Cleander, an extremely highly placed freedman, chamberlain and favourite of Commodus. From 182 onwards, this man was high enough in the hierarchy to find himself in a position to have the former chamberlain and favourite of Commodus eliminated and to take his place. After 184, his influence was such that he had the then Prefect of the Praetorium executed in order to have him replaced. At the same time, he sold the highest administrative and political offices to the highest bidder, particularly the members of the Roman army, by giving them entrances and seats in the Senate. He went so far that in 188 he took command of Rome's Praetorian Guard after eliminating the new Prefect of the Praetorium. His downfall and death in 190 came shortly before the death of Bruttia Crispina, and their deaths may well have been linked to their positions in the highest circles of the empire and in the close circle of Commodus., CRISPINA AVGVSTA, VENVS FELIX

Crispine, Aureus, 178-188, Rome, Or, SPL, Calicó:2377e, RIC:287

Lot description:
Sicily. Naxos. Circa 415 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25.25 mm, 16.89 g). Head of Dionysos right, wearing stephane decorated with ivy wreath. Rev. ΝΑΞΙΟΝ, Silenos squatting nude on rock facing slightly right, head turned to left, holding long transversal thyrsus and kantharos; on the left, ivy plant growing upwards. HGC 2, 984. Cahn, Naxos 102 (V66/R84). Lightly toned. Minor scratch on obverse and some contact marks on reverse; minor die break on reverse, typical of the Cahn R84; edge intermittently smoothed with a file, believed to be done to fit the coin into a pendant, probably from the early 20th century or just before. However, of the most refined classical style, a masterpiece of Dionysian exuberance. Good Very Fine. Rare.
From a Swiss Collection, formed in Ticino before 2005.
This short-lived coinage, likely issued to fund Athens' ill-fated expedition against Syracuse, represents a notable departure from earlier designs. Unlike the archaic tetradrachms minted after Naxos' independence in 461 BC, these coins exhibit a refined classical style. The obverse portrays Dionysos with a cool, Olympian presence, his gaze and tousled hair reflecting contemporary Athenian monumental sculpture. The reverse shows Silenos in a more relaxed, humanized form, seated in a simplified landscape and anticipating his wine. This transition from rigid archaic forms to dynamic, lifelike depictions highlights the coin's artistic excellence and alignment with high classical aesthetics."

Portrait of Geta erased, Caracalla's Damnatio Memoriae of Geta applied after his murder in AD 211.

Upon Septimius' passing in AD 211, his sons Caracalla and Geta assumed joint rule of the empire. Their joint rule was a failure, the Imperial Palace was separated into two sections and they threatened to divide the empire between them. During the Festival of Saturnalia, December 211, Caracalla tried unsuccessfully to have his brother assassinated. But a week later, at an arranged meeting in their mother's quarters, Geta was murdered by Caracalla's centurions.

Caracalla immediately ordered a damnatio memoriae of his brother's image: statues were removed, paintings were destroyed or, like the Severan Tondo erased, and coins were recalled to have his image carved out. This damnatio was especially apparent on the provincial coinage of Pergamum in Mysia and Stratonicaea in Caria. It is estimated that approximately 95% of the dual bust types at Stratonicea have had the portrait of Geta erased, many of them having a countermark of Roma or Caracalla stamped over his bust.

Estimate: 500 USD
