The Jonathan H. Kagan Collection of Ancient Greek Coins
MACEDON. Argilos. Circa 510-500 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 12.78 g, 7 h). Pegasos with curved wing prancing to right. Rev. Bellerophon, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet and a cuirass, running to right, his head turned back to left, holding a sheathed sword with both hands; in the field to right, hoplite shield leaning on the inner dotted border; all within an incuse square. Gillet Plates 858 = HGC 3, 1, 464 HPM p. 122, 16, pl. III, 34 and pl. XIV, 23 ('Crestones') = Jameson 1837 = Liampi 17a (O15/R17) = Svoronos HPM pl. III, 34 & pl XIV, 23 = Traité II, 4, 1213 and pl. CCCXXVI, 6 (this coin). Extremely rare, the finer of the two known specimens. Rough surfaces, some corrosion pits and reverse struck from a damaged die, otherwise, very fine.
From the Collections of Jonathan H. Kagan, Charles Gillet, Bank Leu 77, 11 May 2000, 159, and Robert Jameson and from the Taranto Hoard of 1911 (IGCH 1874).
The main myth of Bellerophon - the name means slayer of Belleros, a Corinthian who our hero killed while practising knife throwing - concerns his taming of Pegasos, whom he then rode when killing the Chimaera. So here, on the obverse, we see Pegasos, seemingly ready for action - hot to trot as it were - while on the reverse we have Bellerophon. He is helmeted and wearing armor, but he seems to be running away from something: his head is turned to look behind him and he is holding his scabbarded sword with both hands. Before him is a tall hoplite's shield and, possibly, a spear. Many Greek coins tell stories that run from the obverse to the reverse, but if that is the case here, exactly what is happening is unclear.
Starting price: 12500 CHF

Π-Α-Ν Forepart of griffin left; below, sturgeon swimming to left. HGC 7, 113. MacDonald 69. Particularly sharply struck and with a stunning dark chocolate glossy patina. Extremely fine.
The accurate depiction of the sturgeon below the griffin on the reverse, reminds us of that fish's great importance for the city's economy.

IONIA. Erythrai (?). Circa 500-480 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 16 mm, 7.00 g). Nude hero (Erythros?) on horseback to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA 1835 (same reverse die). Jameson 2269 (same reverse die). Rosen (same reverse die). SNG von Aulock 1943 (same reverse die). SNG Lockett 2814 (this coin). Traité II, 480 and pl. XII, 10. Rare and with an exceptional pedigree. A beautiful piece of wonderful late Archaic style. About extremely fine.
From the Hermann Robinow Collection, Morton & Eden 51 ('A Collection of Exceptional Ancient Greek Coins'), 24 October 2011, 144, ex Münzen & Medaillen AG 68, 15 April 1986, 281 and Hess 252, 24-25 May 1982, 66, from the collections of R. C. Lockett, Glendining, Part XII, 21-23 February 1961, 2294, and C. S. Bement, Naville VII, 23-24 June 1924, 1450, ex Hirsch XXX ('Griechische und römische Münzen aus dem Besitze des Rev. Percy Barron (Whyteleafe) und eines bekannten englischen Gelehrten [Sir Arthur Evans]'), 11 May 1911, 568, and from the collections of G. Philipsen, Hirsch XXV, 29 November 1909, 2128 and P. Mathey (1844-1929).
The depiction of a naked warrior or hero on this beautiful coin is reminiscent of nearly contemporary didrachms from Sicily, especially from Gela, which also depict a naked warrior with a spear. They point to the significance of cavalry in late Archaic Greek society. Since only wealthy landowners could afford the breeding and keeping of horses, the horse became a status symbol par excellence for the uppermost echelon of society in the Greek poleis. Unlike the didrachms from Syracuse and Gela, our piece likely originates from Erythrai in western Asia Minor, where Achaemenid influences are also conceivable in the appearance of cavalry motifs at the start of the 5th century. It is a splendid late Archaic representation of a nude rider, which explains why the piece found its way into the famous collections of H. Robinow, R. C. Lockett, C. S. Bement, Rev. P. Barron, Sir A. Evans, G. Philipsen, and Paul Mathey.

Estimate: 7500 CHF

MACEDON. Sermyle. Circa 500-470 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 16 mm, 2.59 g). Nude horseman riding a galloping horse to right, holding his left hand behind the horse's neck and holding his right on the left side of his horse's rump; border of dots. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. AMNG III, 2, pl. XXI, 8 = Weber 1896 (Sermyle). HPMp. 110, 25a and pl. XII, 26 (Bisaltai) = Rhousopoulos 1003 = SNG ANS 725 (Sermyle, same dies). Traité II, 1, 1516 and pl. XLVII, 17 (Alexander I). Very rare. Nicely toned and well-centered, an exceptionally fine example, one of the best known. Extremely fine.
From the collection of Major Anthony F. Milavic, USMC (Ret.), ex Gemini I, 11 January 2005, 70, Leu 72, 12 May 1998, 169 and from the collection of Dr. A. Ghertsos, Sternberg XIX, 18 November 1987, 132.
This coin is presently ascribed to the Macedonian city of Sermyle, though whether this is right is another matter! Svoronos assigned it to the Bisaltai and E. Babelon suggested it was an issue of Alexander I. The attribution to Sermyle is based on the named tetradrachms that show an armoured warrior riding a galloping horse, holding the reins with his left hand, behind the horse's neck, and holding a spear in his upraised right hand. This coin, however, shows a nude rider who, despite the descriptions in various catalogues, does not seem to be holding a spear in lowered right hand (if anything it is a whip). What it actually looks like is a rider who is about to start jumping off his horse!

Plato mentioned horse races with jockeys carrying torches; they seem to have been staged in the Piraeus in Athens in honour of the Thracian goddess Bendis. By the 2nd century BC they also had them at the Theseia - also in Athens. They were, of course, popular elsewhere, as this example from Tarentum proves.

Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 34 mm, 26.48 g, 12 h), Rome, 140-144. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. TIBERIS / S C The river-god Tiber reclining left on urn from which water flows, placing his right hand on ship and holding reed in his left. BMC 1313. Cohen 819. RIC 642a. Boldly struck and unusually well preserved for this popular issue. Minor smoothing and with very light pitting and a tiny flan crack, otherwise, about extremely fine.
Antoninus Pius' reign saw the 900th anniversary of Rome's founding in 148. While there is some debate about how the event was celebrated, it is clear that Pius' coinage contains numerous references to Rome's mythical past around this time (see also lot 268 below). The reverse of this particular piece shows Tiberinus, the personification of the great river flowing through Rome. While the importance of the Tiber to Rome's prosperity is obvious, it was also entwined with the city's foundation myth as the river carried the infants Romulus and Remus to safety after their granduncle, Amulius, had ordered their deaths. Likewise, the river protected their mother, Rhea Silvia, by marrying her and raising her to the status of a goddess.
