ILLUSTTRAZIONE: STATUA DI HERMANUBIS AI MUSEI VATICANI (prima immagine).

Many Roman emperors were fond of architecture, and consequently of striking coins with architectural types, but in this regard, we must acknowledge that Trajan was the most prolific of them all. On this aureus we have a depiction of his marvellous forum, represented by the façade of its entrance. It appears as a building of six columns with its central entrance flanked by four distyle shrines, each containing a statue and situated beneath a circular shield. The roof supports an array of statues and statuary groups: in the centre is a facing chariot of six horses; the outermost horses are assisted by standing warriors, and the whole scene is flanked by military trophies and figures of Victory. The forum was dedicated in 112 or 113, the coin types presumably were struck in 115, and the final touches seemingly were completed about two years later. Trajan struck a variety of Imperial coins with architectural reverses, including many with identifiable statues and statuary groups, such as Trajan's equestrian statue and the castellum of the Aqua Traiana. Foremost among his other architectural types are his basilica, the Circus Maximus, the 'Danube bridge,' a hexagonal harbour, a triumphal arch, Trajan's Column, a richly ornamented gateway to Area Capitolina, the temple of Jupiter Victor and an octastyle temple which may be that of Honos, or perhaps the one eventually dedicated by Hadrian to Trajan and Plotina that occupied the end of the forum opposite the entrance depicted on this aureus.

Laureate head of Apollo right, with hair and rolled into chignon at back of head, two loose curls falling behind / C VIBIVS / VARVS, Venus Callipyge standing right, seen from behind, nude but for drapery falling around knees, looking at herself with mirror in left hand, drapery in right; column to left. Calicò 33. Crawford 494/34. Sydenham 1137. A delightful example struck on brilliant, autumnal surfaces.
Ex Harlan J. Berk, private sale with old dealer's tag included.
The reverse image of Venus is likely modeled after the marble Roman statue - Aphrodite Kallipygos (Callipygian Venus) - from the late 1st century BC, in turn thought to be a copy of an older Greek statue, and literally means "Venus (Aphrodite) of the beautiful buttocks." The Venus depicted on this issue humanizes her as she playfully looks at herself in the mirror.

The obverse struck somewhat off center and with a minor scratch at 4 o'clock, otherwise, virtually as struck.
As the mother of Aeneas, Venus was the mythical ancestress of the Julian family and hence venerated, in the form of Venus Genetrix, by both Julius Caesar and Octavian. The star on her shield is none other than the Sidus Iulium, a comet that appeared during the festivities held by Octavian in honor of Venus Genetrix on 20-23 July 44 BC, and was subsequently connected to Caesar's deification.

Cr-443/1; CRI-9; Syd-1006; RSC-49. Obverse: Elephant advancing right, trampling upon horned serpent; Reverse: Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. A stunning example of the ever-popular Caesar "Elephant" Denarius. Struck in the year that Caesar crossed the Rubicon, this type could not come from a more momentous point in Roman history. This piece features a charming pig-like elephant above Caesar's bold and complete name. The reverse is just as well-struck, and both sides are rather nicely centered for the issue. The fields abound with luster that complements the elegant purple-tinted tone. A crescent-shaped banker's mark on the upper obverse field takes nothing away from the piece, and even adds visual interest as it resembles the moon in the background. An enticing example that will undoubtedly appeal to a wide array of collectors.
Estimate: $1000 - $1500

Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.87 g, 12 h), D. Turullius, moneyer. Military mint moving with Antony (Actium?), summer 31. M•ANTONIVS•AVG•IMP•IIII•COS•TERT•III•VIR-•R•P•C Bare head of Mark Antony to right. Rev. Victory standing front, head to left, holding wreath tied with fillet in her right hand and palm frond over her left shoulder; all within laurel wreath. Babelon (Antonia) 147 and (Turullia) 6. Crawford 545/2. CRI 388. RBW 1851. Sydenham 1211a. Rare and very likely the finest known example. A spectacular, boldly struck and lustrous piece, with an incredibly detailed portrait and a wonderful reverse. Tiny mark on Antony's cheek, otherwise, virtually as struck.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
Struck right before Mark Antony's and Cleopatra's dreams of world domination would be utterly crushed under the relentless blows delivered to their galleys by Agrippa's rams in the Battle of Actium on 2 September 31 BC, this wonderful coin feigns an optimism which Mark must have long abandoned at that point. Trapped in swampy terrain at the mouth of the Gulf of Ambrakia after a surprise advance by the forces of Octavian, Antony's massive army and fleet suffered from hunger, disease and desertion throughout the summer of 31 BC. The situation eventually became untenable, forcing him and his beloved queen to attempt a breakthrough through Agrippa's fleet. Their plan was for Antony to engage the opponent so that Cleopatra could slip away with her contingent and the war treasury. Antony would subsequently also break away from Agrippa and reassemble his and Cleopatra's naval and land forces further east to continue the struggle on more solid grounds, with the vast resources of the eastern provinces and Ptolemaic Egypt eventually tipping the scales of the war in their favor.
However, Agrippa's superior generalship and his forces' higher morale and tactical flexibility won him a resounding victory over Antony's fleet, and while the latter successfully fled the scene after transferring from his giant flag ship to a smaller vessel, three-quarters of his fleet was either captured or destroyed. Meanwhile, Cleopatra had successfully sailed to Egypt - a planned tactical withdrawal that would lead to numerous misogynistic accusations of cowardice and treason by ancient and modern writers - but her and her lover's fate was sealed when Antony's demoralized land army capitulated to Octavian shortly after the battle, and most of the eastern client rulers forsook their former master before long. In 30 BC, Octavian's forces entered Egypt, and both Mark Antony and Cleopatra famously committed suicide, bringing to an end the fifteen-year epic struggle that saw Octavian's rise to become the most powerful ruler the world had ever known.

CLASSICAL NUMISMATIC GROUP, Triton XXI, Lot: 144. Estimate $7500.
Sold for $8000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

EGYPT, Alexandria. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ Drachm (34mm, 32.15 g, 11h). Dated RY 21 (AD 157/158). AV TI AI A∆P ANTωNINOC CЄB, laureate bust right, slight drapery / Isis-Sothis seated facing, head right, holding a cornucopia with her right hand and a long scepter with her left, riding a dog (Sirius or Sothis) right; the dog is looking back at Isis; below, L KA (date). Köln 1804 var. (obv. bust type); Dattari (Savio) 8580 (this coin); K&G 35.752 var. (same); Emmett 1593.21; Staffieri, Alexandria In Nummis 142 (this coin). Near EF, dark brown surfaces with traces of green and red. Very rare and in exceptional condition for the type. Only one low-grade example sold at auction since 2000 (CNG E-Sale 397, lot 365).

From the Giovanni Maria Staffieri Collection, purchased from Renzo Canavesi, Sagno, 1996. Ex Renzo Canavesi Collection (Sagno); Dr. Piero Beretta Collection (Milan); Giovanni Dattari Collection, no. 8580.
This type appears to be rarer than indicated in Emmett, where it is given an “R1” rating. With CoinArchives listing only the specimen we sold in our Electronic Auction 397 (17 May 2017), lot 365, it is a rare type in the Alexandrian series, which is skewed by the number in institutional collections, hence Emmett’s rating. Of those in private hands, this is certainly one of the finest known.

A fascinating type related to the Great Sothic Cycle that Giovanni discussed in a 1998 article (G. M. Staffieri, “Isis-Demetra-Sothis nella monetazione alessandrina” in Annotazioni Numismatiche, Series II, no. 30 [1998], pp. 693-697).

illustrazione:  figurine, Isis-Sothis on a dog. The sculpture is made of pale brown clay with white slip. Isis is looking forward, riding on a dog, seemingly of malteser breed. She is wearing a long garment, on her chest the Isis knot. The left hand resting on her lap, the right hand resting on a curved horn. On her head is a horned crown with sun disc. Her face is detailed, especially the eyes. The dog has its forelegs raised as for a leap, the face turned to the right, wearing a necklace.

Good Very Fine; excellent for the type. Very Rare.

This type has often been attributed to the Festival of Isis coinage struck during the fourth century. While András Alföldi did not include this type in his catalogue of the Festival of Isis coinage (1937), it was included in the plates.

It has been convincingly argued by J. van Heesch (The Last Civic Coinages and the Religious Policy of Maximinus Daza, The Numismatic Chronicle 153, 1993) that this coin belongs to a group of small bronze denomination coins struck at Alexandria from the end of 311 until the end of 312. The coins were issued under civic authority and depicted deities specific to the area on the obverse and reverse, such as Nilus depicted here.

Contemporary civic coins issued at the mints of Nicomedia and Antioch were of the same size and weight, and typologically consistent. That civic coinage was issued by three separate mints contemporaneously is particularly significant for the last civic issue had been that of Perga in AD 275. The revival was to be temporary and can be understood within the context of the renewed period of persecution of the Christians under Maximinus Daza.

Following the death of Galerius in 311, the dioceses of Asiana, Pontica and Oriens came under the control of Maximinus. Eusebius records that embassies approached Maximinus from both Nicomedia and Antioch to request that Christians should not be allowed to live in their cities (Hist. Eccles. IX). Similar requests from other cities in the eastern dioceses followed. Maximinus, sympathetic to anti-Christian measures, gave support for the closing of Churches and confiscation of property belonging to Christians, who were also expelled from cities in the region. The revival and circulation of civic coinages depicting ancient gods during this period of persecution reflects the actions of those eastern cities and might be seen as anti-Christian propaganda.

The persecutions ended in 313, following an imperial edict restoring the privileges and property of the Christians. This sudden change in religious policy possibly resulted from the fear of reprisals from Constantine and Licinius in the west.

Light tone and extremely fine / good extremely fine

Ex Leu sale 25, 1980, 41. From an Exceptional Collection assembled between the early 70s and late 90s. The designs on this masterful nomos are boastful celebrations of the issuing city, as Croton controlled the famous sanctuary of Hera Lacinia on the nearby Lacinian promontory, and it counted Heracles as its founder. As tranquil as the images of Hera and Heracles appear, this coin would seem to have been struck in a particularly troublesome era. Jenkins associates it with the period in which the Syracusan tyrant Dionysius I meddled in the affairs of South Italy, and ruled over Croton for a dozen years. It is generally believed that this majestic portrait of Hera Lacinia is derived from Cimon's immensely influential facing Arethusa at Syracuse. Katherine Erhart, in her 1978 doctoral thesis on the facing head motif on Greek coins, notes that this image of Hera Lacinia was copied on coinages of other cities in South Italy, including Pandosia, Fenseria, Hyria, Phistelia, Neapolis, Poseidonia, Thurium and Nola, though in each case with lesser degrees of success than seen on the present coin. The depiction of Heracles Epitrapezeus ("Heracles at the table") lounging as he holds aloft a cup of wine bears all the hallmarks of statuary captured on a miniature scale. The observations of Phyllis Lehman in her 1946 study of statuary on Greek coins are of great interest. She notes (p.40): "The highly plastic quality of the reverse type, the rendering of the vigorous body, suggests the likelihood that this numismatic image reflects a statuary prototype. Such details as the inclination of the head, the lowering of the extended arm until it almost rests upon the right thigh, and the foreshortened left leg appear to be concessions made by a skilled die- cutter in adapting a three-dimensional plastic type to a flat, circular field. This hypothesis is strongly reinforced by the analogy between the numismatic type and a group of statues commonly considered to be replicas of the Herakles Epitrapezios of Lyssipos. The relationship is so striking that one is forced to conclude that Lyssipos either based his work upon an earlier numismatic type whose plastic potentialities he divined or, what is far more probable, that he derived his conception from an older statuary type which is also reflected on the coinage of Croton."
