On 6/21/2018 at 3:24 PM, King John said:

Mysia, Kyzikos EL Stater. Mid 4th century BC. Large race horse rearing up to right, ridden by Phillip II of Macedon, bearded, wearing kausia, diadem and chlamys; tunny fish to right below / Speckled quadripartite incuse square. Von Fritze 168, pl. 5, 16; Greenwell -; SNG France 315; Boston MFA Supp. 151; Lanz 157, lot 137. 16.00g, 19mm.
Near Mint State. A splendid coin, bright and sharply struck. Extremely Rare, and by far the finest known of very few examples.
The early Milesian foundation of Kyzikos on the isthmus of the Arktouros peninsula, protruding from the south-west coast of the Propontis, was ideally sited for its role as commercial intermediary par excellence at the centre of east-west trade. The earliest electrum coinage of Kyzikos with its characteristic ‘tunny fish’ emblem dates from about 550, and was based on the Phokaic weight standard of about 16.1g, the equivalent value to a Persian gold daric of 8.4g. They were contemporarily called Kyzikenes and the distribution of hoard finds makes it clear that it was the acceptable currency for trade between Thrace and the northern coasts of the Black Sea, and from Athens to Ionia, so much so that Kyzikenes are mentioned in Athenian inventories (cf. ACGC p. 261-2). This electrum coinage bears a wide variety of types, many of which are mythological or historical and types copied from contemporary Greek poleis from Magna Graecia to the Levant.
Before one can identify the obverse type of this splendid Kyzikene, it is important to first secure a date for the issue. The celebrated Prinkipo Hoard of over 200 Kyzikenes, 16 Pantikapaion and 4 Lampsakos gold staters (IGCH 1239; Regling ZfN 1931, pp. 1-46) places the burial date to about 335-4 BC, a chronology followed by most modern studies (see Hurter and Liewald SNR 81, 83 and 85). Even if in 1974 the Philip II gold staters were discovered to be a separate hoard (AJA 1974, 308; CH 2, 1976, 41), this low chronology is confirmed by the presence of three specific copied types: the Alexander the Great young Herakles head type derived from his imperial tetradrachms (von Fritze 194; ACGC 964); a young jockey with raised hand on horse derived from Philip II’s later tetradrachms (von Fritze 214; SNG France 344); the present type with a bearded figure wearing kausia and chlamys riding a horse derived from Philip II’s early tetradrachms which celebrate his victory at the Olympic Games in 356 (cf. Le Rider p. 5, 1; Kraay-Hirmer 562), the same year that Alexander was born. Added to these examples are the Philip II bearded portraits types identified by M. R. Kaiser-Raiss (SNR 63, 1983, Philip II. Und Kyzikos, pp. 27-53; von Fritze 197 and 199). Together these types paint a picture of the last issues of Kyzikene electrum, deriving their types directly from the coinage of the liberating Greek forces led by Alexander.
The suggestion that the reverse figure should be identified as Kyzikos, the eponymous founder of the city who was accidentally killed by the Argonauts, lacks any credible supporting arguments, and falls down when the dating of the issue is taken into consideration. With no identifying features besides a kausia, it would be highly illogical to suppose that such an issue, struck at this late period, would represent the mythical founder of the city. Given the evidence presented by the Prinkipo Hoard, and the clear stylistic similarities, an identification of the rider as Philip II of Macedon seems secure.

Woytek 496f. Calicó 986.
Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue, possibly the finest specimen
known. A very attractive portrait of fine style and a very appealing
reverse type. Good extremely fine

Marcus Ulpius Trajanus was born at Italica in Spain and after several important military victories, he was eventually appointed governor of Upper Germany by Nerva who later adopted him as the heir to the throne. On his succession, Trajan decided that the time was ripe for territorial expansion and he successfully undertook the conquest of Dacia which then became a Roman province. In the latter part of his reign, Trajan turned his attention to the Eastern frontier. Trajan departed from Rome in October, 113, to launch his last great campaign in the East. After rejecting a proposal by a Parthian embassy in Athens, Trajan moved onto Antioch, where he wintered in preparation for the anticipated Armenian campaign of 114. After the successful conclusion of this initial campaign, Trajan once again wintered in Antioch, and in the spring of 115 led his army into northern Mesopotamia and Adiabene; he found success in both places and added the former to the Empire. Trajan's greatest triumph, however, did not come until 116, when he once again left Antioch, initially to revisit Adiabene, and then to march down the Tigris and sack the Parthian capital Ctesiphon. The campaign was an enormous success: the capital was stripped of its legendary wealth and by mid-116 the defeat of Parthia seemed complete. Afterward, Trajan felt sufficiently secure to make a brief excursion to the Persian Gulf. However, he soon realized his gains were ephemeral, and in an effort to preserve some control over the Parthians he installed the pro-Roman king Parthamaspates on the throne, but his puppet-king did not fare well. At the end of Trajan's long and productive life, he witnessed the consequences of his decades of expansionism, as revolts erupted in Armenia, Mesopotamia, Cyprus, Egypt, Cyrene, western North Africa and the Empire's northern borders in Europe. Before Trajan could march westward to address some of these uprisings, he died while encamped in Cilicia. His successor, Hadrian, scaled back Trajan's expanded empire to a more manageable size and as a result enjoyed a relatively peaceful reign. The profectio type illustrated on this aureus refers to the departure of Trajan from Rome, the occasion that marked the opening of the Parthian campaign. An innovative composition is present on the coin: Trajan, in military dress, clasping a spear, rides on horseback surrounded by soldiers. Whereas traditional coin reverse types typically featured two figures, here the emperor is seen accompanied by and interacting directly with his subjects in a much larger compositional scene.

MYSIA. Kyzikos. 5th-4th century BC. Stater (Electrum, 18.5 mm, 15.99 g). Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA -. Greenwell 10. SNG Paris 344. Von Fritze 214, and pl. VI, 26 (same dies). Extremely rare. Lightly toned and well centered on a large flan. Good very fine.
When this type first appeared it was dated to c. 450-400 and its cataloguer suggested that the obverse type was derived from the coinage of Tarentum. In fact, that date is probably a bit early; as for the idea that the Kyzikenes were copying nomoi from Tarentum - that is surely going too far! What we do have here is a typical scene from the aristocratic world of ancient horse racing; events, which commonly took place as part of religious festivals all over the Greek world, not just at horse-mad Tarentum where they were so commonly commemorated. Thus the victorious jockey, who has already been crowned the winner with one wreath, crowns his horse with a second.

Struck on very large flan and from fresh dies. Virtually as struck and almost Fdc
The reverse of this lovely aureus shows one of the Dioscuri, Castor, holding a spear in one hand and a horse by the bridle in the other. In mythology, the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, were the twin sons of Zeus and Leda, the wife of King Tyndareus of Sparta. Their cult first appears at Rome in 484 B.C. after the battle of Lake Regillus against the Etruscans, when it was said that they appeared on the battlefield to lead the Romans to victory and simultaneously at the Forum in Rome to announce to the worried families of the soldiers their victory. A temple to them both, but usually referred to simply as the Temple of Castor, was built there in their honour. While they play prominently on the coinage struck during Republican times, their appearance on Imperial coins is actually quite rare. Castor had special relevance as the patron of the equites, the Roman social order of knights, and his depiction here symbolizes Commodus as the Prince of Youth (princeps iuventutis), in which role he presided over the Trojan Games where youths from Rome's most noble patrician families competed against each other in horse races in the circus. The obverse is a wonderfully centred and particularly fine-style portrait of the young emperor.

Ancient poets located the burial spot of Enceladus under Mount Etna in Sicily, and the volcano's eruptions were said to be the breath of the giant, and the tremors caused by him rolling over under the mountain. Akragas was founded in about 580 BC and quickly grew into one of the most prosperous Greco-Sicilian cities, with a population in the hundreds of thousands. Its wealth derived from the rich soil fed by the River Hypsas, productive tidepools, and trade. From its earliest coinage, struck circa 510 BC, Akragas featured the eagle, sacred to Olympian Zeus, to whom the city dedicated an immense temple, backed with an overhead view of a crab, harvested from the as a delicacy in the region. As the city's wealth and influence increased, the basic design was augmented and improved, with artistic achievement reaching its zenith in the period 420-406 BC, when this rare and remarkable piece was struck. Here the eagle has just snatched up its prey, a hare (symbol of the Sicilian city of Messana -- perhaps a sly allusion to civic rivalry?), and slammed it back onto a tidepool rock to which a scallop shell has attached itself, a scene of "nature red in tooth and claw" captured with a keen eye for detail and rendered with astonishing skill. On the reverse, the crab is joined on the sea bottom by a large, wide-mouthed fish with a spiny dorsal fin and fan-like tail, a rendering lifelike enough to identify the species as the stone grouper (polyprion cernium). To the left and right are another scallop and a sea snail, further symbols of aquatic bounty. The superb artistry of this particular piece was celebrated by its inclusion in Kraay & Hirmer's Greek Coins (Thames & Hudson, 1966), a magnificent "coffee table book" of the finest in Greek numismatics that has achieved legendary status.

The reverse design of this stater suggests that the artist had in mind a different approach to the myth of the Sixth Labor of Herakles when he engraved the die. According to the traditional rendering of the myth, Herakles, with the assistance of the gods Athena and Hephaistos, destroyed the Stymphalian Birds by shooting them down with his arrows once they took flight. Generally, this is the rendering of the event depicted on most coins – Herakles drawing his bow to take aim at the birds in flight. Such an active scene, however, when depicted on the coinage, results in a compact and often dense image. The engravers at Stymphalos, however, chose to employ a more novel and somewhat subtler design. Rather than adopting a literal interpretation, they chose to depict the hero in a more vigorous pose. Here, Herakles strides forth to do battle, lion skin flowing over his left arm behind him, while he holds his bow in his left hand (the only overt reference to the myth). His club, held in his raised right hand, is poised to strike. What he is about to strike, however, is the ethnic which curves upward in flight before him and serves as surrogate birds.
