GORDIANVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, seen from behind. Rev. COL AELI ADRI ICONIESI (sic!) / S R Aphrodite, nude and seen three-quarters from behind, but with her head turned toward the viewer, seated to left in bathtub, washing herself and wringing out her hair; behind to right, chiton hung up on tree; below, hound standing left, head turned back to right. Von Aulock, Lykaonien, 330-331 ( same dies ). Extremely rare and undoubtedly the finest of a very few known examples. A magnificent piece, well struck on a full flan and with delightful reverse details. Extremely fine.
This beautiful coin shows the famous Bath of Aphrodite: we see here three-quarters from behind, sitting nude in a bathtub and wringing out her wet hair while playfully glancing at the viewer. To the right, her chiton is loosely hung up on a tree, and a hunting dog is standing on guard in front of the bath. It is worth noting that the dies for this issue were most certainly crafted in Antiochia in Pisidia, a mint which was bursting with activity in the first half of the 3rd century: in fact, this obverse die was also used on SNG von Aulock 4956, a sestertius from that mint.

Sculptural parallels to this type are thought to represent Aphrodite emerging from the sea after her birth and wringing the seawater from her hair, but our coin appears to depict a bathing scene. Dragonov knew only one reverse die of this type in the entire coinage of Deultum, used under Gordian III (pp. 124-5). Our coin is from a new, second, reverse die of the type, also used under Gordian III, but coupled with a different obverse die of that emperor, Draganov\'s Obv. 109, which was known to him from coins with three other reverse types (p. 75). Our coin also reveals a new, older state of that obverse die, with a large cud in the legend before the emperor\'s forehead, a fault which does not appear on any of the coins from this obverse die published by Dragonov.Green patination. From the Jameson and Athos and Dina Moretti collections. The southwestern region of Italy known as Campania derived its name from the important city of Capua. Although Capua was an original Etruscan foundation and the coast of Campania was settled by Greek colonists at Cumae and Neapolis, the region was dominated by Oscan Italic peoples. In the late fifth century BC, the cities of Campania faced repeated invasion by the Samnites, a warlike Oscan people of south-central Italy. During one of these incursions Capua fell to its attackers. It was resettled as a Samnite city with Italic inhabitants who subsequently called themselves the Campani. The martial prowess of the Campani made them a menace to the neighbouring cities and made them popular as mercenaries, especially in Sicily, but conflicts with the Samnites of Samnium ultimately drew them into the Roman sphere of influence in the fourth century BC. The present stater was struck when the Campani were at the height of their power in Campania in the fifth century BC. However, while the coin clearly names the Campani in Greek, the Athena and man-faced bull types are derived from contemporary Neapolitan issues. Indeed the quality of the engraving has led to the conclusion that the coinage naming the Campani was actually struck at Neapolis on their behalf. Neapolis also seems to have struck coins with similar types for other Italic peoples. The important question in all of this is whether Naples struck these coins as part of some larger Campanian monetary alliance or as tribute money to ensure that it did not suffer the same fate as Capua. Although the man-faced bull traditionally represented the Acarnanian river-god Acheloos, over time this image was applied to the spirit of any river. Cnossos had been the great capital of the Minoan civilization on Crete during the Bronze Age and its grand palace complex has sometimes been described as representing the first city of Europe. Although Cnossos was destroyed in ca. 1370 BC, probably by Mycenean invaders from mainland Greece, the memory of the palace and the importance that bulls 1370 BC, probably by Mycenean invaders from mainland Greece, the memory of the palace and the importance that bulls had enjoyed in Minoan culture lived on in the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. According to the myth, the powerful king Minos of Crete ordered his skilled builder Daedalus to construct a vast maze known as the labyrinth-a memory of the winding streets of the ruined Cnossian palace complex-to imprison the Minotaur, the monstrous offspring of his wife Pasiphae and the Cretan Bull. In order to keep the Minotaur fed, Minos ordered the conquered city of Athens to provide a tribute of seven youths and seven maidens every nine years. This terrible tribute was only brought to an end when the hero Theseus, with assistance from Minos' daughter Ariadne, braved the labyrinth and killed the Minotaur. Through the frequent retelling of this myth, the labyrinth became the most famous landmark in Cnossos and indeed all of Crete. By the Hellenistic period the labyrinth maze had evolved into the civic emblem of Cnossos and made frequent appearances on the city's coinage down to the Roman Imperial period. While the labyrinth is most commonly depicted in a square form on this remarkable tetradrachm, it has been given a circular form in order to better follow the contour of the coin's edge. It is paired with a beautifully-executed head of Apollo on the obverse. Estimate: 45000 CHF

Thin die break on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine. From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, privately acquired from P. Höfer on 18 December 1981 (with a photocopy of the original correspondence between Peter Höfer and Dr. Hans Krähenbühl regarding the acquisition of this coin enclosed). Struck during M. Junius Brutus' tenure as moneyer in 54 BC, this issue shows two of his most illustrious ancestors. On the obverse, we find the image of M. Junius Brutus, Rome's legendary first consul, who supposedly expulsed his uncle Tarquinius Superbus, the last Roman king, in 509 BC, whereas the reverse portrays C. Servilius Ahala, another legendary figure from the early Roman Republic, whose fame derived from killing the would-be tyrant Spurius Maelius in 439 BC. With our hindsight knowledge of Brutus' role in the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March in 44 BC, the motives shown on this coin appear almost prophetic. On the other hand, it was common practice for Rome's moneyers to portray famous ancestors on their denarii as a means of aggrandizing their family's glory in a time when social norms still rigidly prohibited the use of their own portraits. Commodus has thus been featured in novels, plays, and feature films as a villain, most recently in the cinema epics "Fall of the Roman Empire" (1964) and "Gladiator" (2001). Son of the greatly revered "Philosopher Emperor" Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180), Commodus was the first emperor born "in the purple," in AD 161. Marcus Aurelius made him co-Augustus in AD 177, and the two emperors embarked on a military campaign against the Germans the following year. Worn out by his exertions, Marcus Aurelius died on 17 March AD 180. Freed of his dutiful father's control, Commodus immediately cut a deal with the Germans and abandoned all further plans of military conquest. Returning to Rome, he plunged into sensual pursuits and left governing to a succession of favorites who plundered the public purse and aggrandized themselves. While Commodus continued and worsened the debasement of Roman silver coinage, a process begun by his father, the gold coinage remained of high purity, weight and artistry. This beautiful aureus depicts him as a young man very much in the image of his father. The historians Dio and Herodian both describe him as exceptionally handsome, a picture borne out by his coin portraits and sculpture. Commodus issued this series to rally his troops after the execution of Sextus Tigidius Perennius, the Praetorian Prefect who essentially ran the empire from AD 180-185, until it was revealed he had aspirations of ascending to the throne. Beautifully toned and centered, among the finest known examples of the type, a splendid piece. Extremely fine. From an American collection, ex Peus 421, 1 November 2017, 1040 and Lanz 92, 4 June 1999, 143. While didrachms were struck by Leontini, as they were by Syracuse, they were not a significant part of the city's coinage. When major fractions of the tetradrachm were needed, it is more than likely that they were supplied by the standard didrachm coinages produced by other cities, such as Segesta or Selinos. The present piece is not only a wonderful example of a Leontinine didrachm, in its condition it is also one of the finest known. Estimate: 7500 CHF

From a European collection, acquired in 2019. The complexity of the scene on the reverse suggested that it was taken from a painting rather than a sculpture. It is similar to other painterly scenes on coins, such as 'Sulla's Dream' or those of Alexander. Lot description: MACEDON. Sermyle. Circa 500-470 BC. Stater (Silver, 27 mm, 16.90 g). SERMYΛIAO-N Armored warrior, holding spear aloft in his raised right hand, on horseback galloping to right; below, base formed of two horizontal lines enclosing a line of pellets. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square, with a cross-like ornament composed of five pellets at the center. AMNG III/2, 3, pl. XXI, 5 = de Hirsch 987 = Traité I 1668 (struck from the same dies). Rare. Clear and well-centered, with attractive grey surfaces. Usual minor granularity and with an obverse lightly struck, otherwise, about extremely fine. From the A. G. Lot description: MYSIA. Kyzikos. Circa 500-450 BC. Stater (Electrum, 19 mm, 15.75 g). Sea eagle, with spread wings, alighting on a tunny fish, which he clasps with his talons and tears with his beak. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Von Fritze 94 and pl. III, 13 = BMFA 1454 = Greenwell 151 = Warren 1576. Of great rarity, probably the third known example. With a powerful depiction of a sea eagle, possibly derived from the types of the Black Sea city of Sinope, a trading partner of Kyzikos. Somewhat weakly struck or struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, good very fine. From a Bavarian collection, acquired prior to the 1990s. Estimate: 10000 CHF
