Roma Numismatics Ltd > E-Sale 68 Auction date: 27 February 2020
Lot number: 199
Etruria, Vetulonia Æ Sextans. 3rd century BC. Head of Nethuns right, wearing ketos headdress; two pellets below, Etruscan legend 'vatl' behind / Ornamental trident between two dolphins; two pellets flanking. EC I, 11.1–25 (O2/R2); HN Italy 203. 7.11g, 21mm, 7h.
Good Very Fine. Extremely Rare.
Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd, Auction XVI, 26 September 2018, lot 84;
Ex Collection of a Swiss Etruscologist, and outside of Italy prior to December 1992.
The coinage of Vetulonia, with its overwhelmingly maritime themes, attests to the importance of maritime trade and the sea in general to the Etruscans. This is moreover confirmed by the depiction of ships on frescoes, the presence of model ships in Etruscan tombs, and the enormous quantity of foreign goods that found their way to Etruria, significant quantities of which (Greek vases in particular) have been found in the aforementioned tombs. That the Etruscans themselves were skilled sailors and navigators is grudgingly corroborated by Greek and Roman writers who pay them the backhanded compliment of referring to them collectively as Tyrrhenian pirates (such was their domination of the waters off the coast of western Italy). Within their sphere of influence could be counted Sardinia, Corsica, southern France and even parts of Spain and Sicily. An alliance with Carthage prevented any significant Greek colonisation or incursion into their dominions; in 540 a combined Etruscan and Carthaginian task force of 120 warships descended on the Phokaian refugees who had settled at Alalia in Corsica, and having inflicted considerable losses, forced them to abandon the island. Etruscan mastery of the western coast of Italy would however be challenged by the rise of Syracuse, who followed the Athenian example of constructing a standing fleet of triremes – an expensive undertaking the Etruscans were unwilling or unable to match – and at the Battle of Cumae in 475 BC an Etruscan fleet was decisively defeated, considerably weakening their influence in Italy and costing them their valuable mastery of the sea.

Elektron-Stater, 450-430.

John Evans says the obverse ‘seems to be formed of two ivy(?) leaves with berries on either side’ (Coins of the Ancient Britons, pg. 567). Quite possibly. The evergreen ivy plant is famously long-lived. Maybe this coin, which Dr. P. de Jersey suggests is a late issue, celebrates the long life and/or long reign of Cunobelin. On the other hand, the leaves could be vine leaves (cf. Verica’s Vine Leaf staters).

Greek Coins
CILICIA. Tarsos. 425-400 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 10.81 g, 10 h). Male hero (Bellerophon), apparently nude but for his petasos, riding winged Pegasos flying to right, holding bridle with his left hand and, with his right, thrusting a trident downwards to right; visible on the winged horse's flank behind the wing, traces of saddle cloth; below, on ground line, ankh; border of dots. Rev. Male hero (Bellerophon), apparently nude but for his petasos, riding winged Pegasos leaping to left, holding bridle with his left hand and, with his right, thrusting a trident downwards to left; visible on the winged horse's flank behind the wing, traces of saddle cloth; below in field, ankh with flat bottom or key symbol; all within dotted border and incuse square. Unpublished, but see Roma XVI, 2018, 331 (same dies but of inferior condition). Extremely rare, one of three known examples, all struck from the same obverse die, but from two reverse dies. A superb, sharp, lightly toned example. Extremely fine.
The curious thing about this coin is the double depiction of the mythical hero Bellerophon: flying on the obverse and leaping on the reverse. Of especial interest is the fact that the rider uses a trident, rather than a spear: this could imply that he is a local Cilician hero, since Bellerophon is usually depicted using a spear rather than a trident. Yet this may not be a serious objection since Bellerophon was, of course, the son of Poseidon by Eurynome (her actual husband was Glaukos, son of Sisyphos, but in a complicated affair caused by Zeus's dislike of Sisyphos, Glaukos was not allowed to father children); thus, the trident may well have been a gift to Bellerophon from his actual father. In any event, Bellerophon, like Ikaros, became so hubristic that he tried to fly to Olympus, but Zeus caused Pegasos to bolt, throwing off Bellerophon who was blinded when he landed in a Cilician thorn bush. There is a tomb in Tlos, Lykia, which is supposed to be his, though that is rather unlikely. As mentioned in the note to the preceding lot, the ankh is thought by some to be the symbol of Tarsos. It is also worth noting that the engraver responsible for the obverse die had a real problem showing the hero's trident. As one would expect, Bellerophon is brandishing it with his right hand: we can see the hilt in his upraised hand and the trident head in front of Pegasos' neck. However, since the type is moving to the right, and both Bellerophon's and Pegasos' right sides are facing the viewer, a proper depiction of the trident would have shown the shaft passing before both the rider's and the horse's body; but the engraver was apparently unable to do that. So our artist had the trident pass behind Bellerophon on his left side, in a way that would be virtually impossible for a normal human rider to do.

THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Trihemiassarion(?) (22mm, 7.48 g, 6h). Aristion, strategos. Radiate head right / APIΣTIΩ[N]O[Σ], Taurokathapsia scene: the hero Thessalos jumping from his horse, in background galloping right, onto bull running right, the head of which he restrains with a band; monogram below. Burrer Em. 1, Series 2, – (A8/R– [unlisted rev. die]); RPC I 1440; BCD Thessaly II 931.2 var. (arrangement of legend, form of monogram). Near VF, green patina. From the BCD Collection.The taurokathapsia was a form of bull fighting that was popular at many games in the ancient Greek world, particularly in Crete and Thessaly. Scenes of this event are depicted on coins from various cities in Thessaly, but it is especially prevalent in the 5th century BC coinage of Larissa, which provides much of the current evidence about the sport. In the Thessalian version of the event, a man on horseback was to chase down and subdue a bull. He first rode alongside the running bull, then grabbed the bull by the horns and jumped from his steed onto the back of the bull. It is now known – after close examination of some dies used for silver denominations – that the rider then subdued the bull by passing a cloth or (more likely) a leather band below his horns, thus restricting or possibly even totally blocking his eyesight. This would cause the animal to lose his ferocity and eventually come to a halt.Interestingly, the early stages of the event are not depicted on the coins at Larissa except on some scarce drachms as BCD II 186 and BCD I 1136, but can be seen on rare issues of Atrax (BCD Thessaly II 53), where the rider is pursuing the bull, and the Thessalian League (BCD Thessaly II 897 and the current type), where the rider is shown moving from his horse to the bull.
