Lot number: 399

Price realized: 3,500 USD   (Approx. 3,170 EUR)   Note: Prices do not include buyer's fees.

Lot description:
BAKTRIA, Greco-Baktrian Kingdom. Eukratides I Megas. Circa 170-145 BC. AR Tetradrachm (33mm, 16.96 g, 12h). Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right, wearing crested helmet adorned with bull's horn and ear; all within bead-and-reel border / The Dioskouroi, holding palm fronds and spears, on horses rearing right; monogram in lower right field. Bopearachchi 6X; SNG ANS 472; HGC 12, 131. A hint of deposits, short hairline edge crack. Superb EF. Well centered and boldly struck on a broad flan.
By 240 BC, the regions encompassing modern Afghanistan, western Pakistan and northern India had broken from Seleukid rule to become independent under their own line of kings, which were showcased in a series of coin portraits of astonishing power and realism. Greatest of these was Eukratides I, who reigned circa 170-145 BC. His vast realm was larger than any other Greek-ruled kingdom of the time. Indeed he bestowed upon himself the title of Megas ("the Great"), as seen on his coinage. Eukratides struck silver coins in vast numbers and many survive today. This magnificent silver tetradrachm depicts Eucratides as a general wearing a broad-brimmed Baktrian helmet, greatly resembling a modern-day British explorer in a pith helmet. The portrait, rendered in sculptural high relief, is nearly photographic in its realism and exemplifies the virtuosity achieved by the artisans of this far-flung Greek enclave.

Lykurgos of Athens (Leocrates, 9) relates this classic tale of filial piety; though in the ancient version of the legend there was but one pious hero, by later times this had evolved into the more familiar story involving two brothers: "a stream of fire burst forth from Etna. This stream, so the story goes, flowing over the countryside, drew near a certain city of the Sicilians. Most men, thinking of their own safety, took to flight; but one of the youths, seeing that his father, now advanced in years, could not escape and was being overtaken by the fire, lifted him up and carried him. Hindered no doubt by the additional weight of his burden, he too was overtaken. And now let us observe the mercy shown by the Gods towards good men. For we are told that the fire spread round that spot in a ring and only those two men were saved, so that the place is still called the Place of the Pious, while those who had fled in haste, leaving their parents to their fate, were all consumed."

Outside of the signature on the reverse (known from the die), this piece offers great centering with pleasing, fine style detail. A lightly toned example, this specimen exhibits some hints of cobalt around the devices--mostly on the reverse--further accentuating its charm. A resounding and exceptional piece of signed ancient art, with just some light, even wear on the high points.

ILLUSTRAZIONE: Terracotta oon (egg)ca. 420–410 B.C. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)

Youth abducting woman. Eggs are well attested as funerary offerings—real eggs, artistic counterparts in marble and terracotta or, as here, diminutive vases of egg shape. This example was found with another, now in Athens, and both originally had lids. The abduction scene has been interpreted as depicting Paris and Helen. The shape is particularly pertinent to the subject because Helen was hatched from an egg.

Extremely rare. Old cabinet tone and good very fine
Ex Leu 28, 1981, 151 and DNW A10, 2011, 1020 sales. From the Jameson collection.
Colophon was perhaps the oldest of the Greek cities of Ionia, said to have been founded by sons of Kodros, the semi-mythical king of Athens. In the aftermath of the Greek victory in the Trojan War, Colophon was said to be the scene of a contest between the famous Argive seer Kalchas and the equally renowned seer Mopsos of Klaros. The latter was an oracular cult site sacred to Apollo on the Ionian coast that belonged to the territory of Colophon. According to one tradition, during their meeting at Colophon Kalchas asked Mopsos how many figs hung from a nearby tree. When the figs were all picked it was discovered that Mopsos had correctly answered ten thousand and one. Mopsos then asked Kalchas how many piglets would be borne to a pregnant sow that they came across. Kalchas confessed that he could not answer such a question, to which Mopsos replied that the sow would give birth to ten piglets, only one of which would be male. The sow gave birth the next day and showed Mopsos to have been correct. Mortified by this defeat, Kalchas died of grief on the spot, leaving Mopsos the laurels as the greatest of Greek seers. The present archaic drachm of Colophon features a remarkable facing head of Apollo, the divine father of Mopsos and the ultimate source of his uncanny ability to predict the future and provide answers to seemingly impossible questions.

Ex Triton sale XIV, 2011, 102.
Jason, the leader of the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece, was a Thessalian hero hailing from the city of Iolchos. One mythological tradition elevated him from the status of a local hero to progenitor of the entire Thessalian people as the father of Thessalos, the eponymous hero from which the Thessalians derived their name. Jason almost certainly appears here in his role as the ancestor of all Thessalians since he is not known to have had specific mythological or cult connections to Larissa. He is an interesting choice for the coinage of Larissa, for just as he was the ancestral head of the Thessalians as a whole, Larissa desired to be the head of the Thessalian cities and peoples through the domination of the Thessalian League.

IONIA, Phokaia. Circa 387-326 BC. EL Hekte – Sixth Stater (10.5mm, 2.53 g). Head of Omphale left, wearing lion skin; club behind neck; below, small seal left / Quadripartite incuse square. Bodenstedt Em. 107. VF.
In expiation for his murder of Iphitos at Tiryns, Herakles was ordered by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, the queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Kerkopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women's clothing and spin wool and, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), at one point during this time Omphale even wore Herakles' lion skin and carried his club while ordering him about. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year's service was completed, Herakles married Omphale.
