MYSIA. Cyzicus. Ca. 450-350 BC. EL sixth-stater or hecte (10mm, 2.70 gm). NGC Choice AU★ 4/5 - 5/5. Ca. 410 BC. Helios, nude, kneeling right in front of foreparts of two horses prancing to left and right; tunny fish right below / Quadripartite mill-sail incuse square with stippled interior. Greenwell 23. Jameson 2194. SNG von Aulock 7312. Kraay-Hirmer 715. von Fritze 149. BMC 106.

Cyzicene coinage has great diversity in themes, displaying both local and foreign myths and legends. the sun god appears as radiate on this issue and was worshipped as Helios in Zeleia, a town neighboring Cyzicus, and likely in Cyzicus itself as well. M. Six (Numismatic Chronicle, N.S. xvii, p. 170) suggested that this design has "been copied from a metope of a temple." (Greenwell, p. 59). Staters of this issue are well documented, however, hectes are exceedingly rare with only the worn British Museum example noted in Greenwell. Only one example in sales archives in the past 15+ years.
Estimate: 6000-8000 USD

This militaristic type appears to depict an anonymous warrior or hero, the latter appearing more likely considering the ornamentation of the helmet he wears. His individual features being completely obscured, leaving only his eye and nose visible, imparts a stern, solemn tone to the composition.

Ex Hauck & Aufhäuser 17, 18 March 2003, lot 713, Vierordt Collection (Part II, Schulman, 17 June 1924), lot 11
The purpose of erotic tokens first struck during Tiberius' reign is a subject still under debate. It has been suggested they were brothel tokens, used to pay for sexual acts as an alternative to normal denominations which carried the portrait of the Emperor. However, some scholars dispute this hypothesis and theorise that they were gaming tokens, in which their images were intended to entertain their owners.
