EΦECIΩΝ Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ The hero Androklos walking right, holding spear over his left shoulder and dead boor with his right hand; behind, tree. SNG Copenhagen 512. SNG von Aulock -. Rare. An unusually attractive example with a fine green patina. Light smoothing, otherwise, good very fine.
From the Ktistes Collection, ex CNG E-Auction 203 (2009), 294 (expertly cleaned since).
Androklos was the mythological founder of Ephesus, instructed by the oracle of Delphi to found his city at a place indicated by a fish and a boar. One day, when Androklos and his hunting companions were grilling fish, one of them escaped from the pan, setting the bushes on fire. This startled a boar who tried to flee, but was killed by Androklos, thus fulfilling the prophecy.

Lot description:
Julia Domna (wife of S. Severus) Æ28 of Ilium, Troas. AD 193-217. IOV ΔOMN CЄBACTH, draped bust right / [Є]K[T]Ω[P] IΛIЄNΩN, Hector charging to right, holding shield and about to hurl torch. Bellinger T225. 9.47g, 28mm, 6h.
Very Fine; slightly rough green patina. Extremely Rare; no other examples on CoinArchives.
Acquired from Classical Numismatic Group LLC;
Ex Numismatik Naumann, Auction 58, 1 October 2017, lot 257.
The mint of Ilium had been idle during the civil war that followed the death of Commodus in AD 192, but when Septimius Severus emerged as victor new coins gradually began to appear. While Septimius' wife Julia Domna occupies the obverse of this coin, its reverse recalls a moment from the city's mythological past that had taken root in narratives of the Trojan War. Hector is depicted in the moment before he launched the momentous assault that finally penetrated the Achaean rampart: holding a shield to protect himself Hector strides forward determined to plant a flaming torch into the prow of an Achaean ship, a moment related in Homer's Iliad: 'And now, tell me, O Muses that hold your mansions on Olympus, how fire was thrown upon the ships of the Achaeans. Hector came close up and let drive with his great sword at the ashen spear of Ajax. He cut it clean in two just behind where the point was fastened on to the shaft of the spear. Ajax, therefore, had now nothing but a headless spear, while the bronze point flew some way off and came ringing down on to the ground. Ajax knew the hand of heaven in this, and was dismayed at seeing that Zeus had now left him utterly defenceless and was willing victory for the Trojans. Therefore, he drew back, and the Trojans flung fire upon the ship which was at once wrapped in flame.
The fire was now flaring about the ship's stern, whereon Achilles smote his two thighs and said to Patroklos, "Up, noble horseman, for I see the glare of hostile fire at our fleet; up, lest they destroy our ships, and there be no way by which we may retreat. Gird on your armour at once while I call our people together."' (Hom. Il. 16.112-124).

Coins of the Greeks
Messenia
Messene. Circa 183-182 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 16.79 g 9). Diademed head of Demeter to right, wearing diadem formed of pearls and wheat ears, and a pearl earring. Rev. MESSANIWN Zeus Ithomatas standing right, hurling thunderbolt with his right hand and with an eagle with spread wings perching on the wrist of his outstetched left arm; below his left arm, SWSIKRA above a tripod. BCD Peloponnesos 710 = de Nanteuil 978 = Grandjean 86b ( this coin ). Very rare. Toned. Good very fine. From the Spina collection and the BCD Collection, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 710, ex Bank Leu 36, 7 May 1985, from the collections of H. Nanteuil and S. Pozzi, Naville I, 4 April 1921, 1885.
This coin was struck during a short-lived revolt of Messene against its forced membership in the Achaian League. Unlike other revolt coinages, which were withdrawn and melted down, the rare Messenian tetradrachms must have continued to circulate since the vast majority known today are quite worn; this is, in fact, one of the finest in existance.

IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS III, laureate head r., Rv. SPES - AVGVSTA, Spes standing l., offering flower to three Roman soldiers. RIC I 462 = II 206; C 514.
Extremely rare. Green patina and extremely fine.
This rare and interesting sestertius type was issued in 71 AD, the year which witnessed the great joint triumph of Vespasian and Titus through the streets of the capital in celebration of their victory in Judaea. The style appears to be provincial and the type has been tentatively attributed to Tarraco (modern Tarragona) in Spain, a short-lived mint which had its origins in Galba's Spanish rebellion against Nero. The interesting reverse, which proclaims the hope for the future brought by the new emperor (Spes Augusta), depicts the goddess Spes in her usual pose in company with three military figures in whom we should probably recognize Vespasian and his two sons. Together they represent the state's new-found stability and the anticipation of the continuance of good government through the establishment of a second imperial dynasty.
Starting Price: 2600 GBP
