HGC-2, 671; SNG ANS-256-7. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo left; Reverse: Head of roaring lion left; leaf to right, three barley grains around. A stunning example of the type, this resounding Mint State example provides exceptional centering and tremendous brilliance glistening throughout. LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 390-340 BC. Nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.83 g, 9 h), by the Kal... engraver, struck under the magistrate Kal.... Head of Athena to right, wearing a crested Attic helmet ornamented with Skylla throwing stone to right, a triple pendant earring, and a pearl necklace; in the field to right, Δ/Κ/Φ. Rev. I-HP[AKΛHIΩN] Herakles standing facing, his head and torso turned to the right, wrestling the Nemean lion attacking to left; behind, to left, club with its head below; in the upper left field, ΚΑΛ; between Herakles's legs, Athenian owl standing to right, its head facing. HN III 1377. MAST 2. 12 (this coin). McClean 824. SNG ANS 63. Van Keuren 50. An absolutely superb coin, beautifully centered, very well-struck from fresh dies, and very attractively toned. Extremely fine.

This coin is an absolute masterpiece of high Classical art.

T • CARISIVS / III • VIR Sphinx with spread wings seated to right. Babelon (Carisia) 10. Crawford 464/1. CRI 49. RBW 1613. Sydenham 983b. Of fine style and nicely toned. Some areas of striking flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.
From the collection of Robert Hoge, acquired in 1981 from the collection of Marguerite Stiles Whiting and Nestor L. Stiles, originally bought in 1941 for $1.50, supposedly from a Webb Collection (but not in Hess Luzern 211 (1932).
