Very Fine RIC 193a; Cohen 163. The Apollo Citharoedus of Actium refers to a statue or representation of the god Apollo depicted as a citharoedus, a term used to describe a musician who plays the cithara, an ancient Greek stringed instrument similar to a lyre. This particular depiction of Apollo is significant because of its association with the Battle of Actium, a decisive naval battle fought in 31 BC between the forces of Octavian (later Augustus) and the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. The Battle of Actium, which took place off the coast of western Greece near the promontory of Actium, was a turning point in Roman history, leading to Octavian's victory and the subsequent establishment of the Roman Empire under his rule as Augustus. Before the battle, Octavian is said to have received a favorable omen from Apollo, whom he revered as his patron deity. The association with Apollo was politically significant, as Octavian sought to align himself with the god's attributes of harmony, order, and victory, contrasting himself with Mark Antony, who was more closely associated with the Egyptian goddess Isis through his alliance with Cleopatra. In the aftermath of the victory, Augustus celebrated Apollo's role in his triumph by commissioning a temple dedicated to Apollo on the site of Actium. This temple housed a statue of Apollo Citharoedus, emphasizing the god's role as a cultural and civilizing force. The statue depicted Apollo in a serene and majestic manner, holding a cithara, symbolizing not only his connection to music and the arts but also the harmony and order that Augustus claimed to have restored to the Roman state. The Medusa and Medusa-on-Aegis types on the precious metal coins of Septimius Severus and Caracalla probably were all struck in 207 since one of them names the 15th renewal of Severus’ tribunician power and the obverses are all contemporary. Thus we have two problems in interpreting the meaning of this design: the non-specific nature of the type (and its inscription), and the fact that virtually no ancient evidence exists concerning what happened in 207. Indeed, other coin types are the only evidence by which scholars believe Severus may have briefly visited Africa this year before he and the family set off in 208 for their grand expedition to Britain.
The basic principle of the type seems clear: it refers to the foresight (providentia), presumably in respect to the decision to invade Britain in the following year, 208. But the inscription falls short of naming the source of the foresight, the gods (deorvm) or the emperors (avgvsti)? The Medusa seems to offer a connection with Minerva, who, perhaps, is here cast in the role of having foresight for the care of the emperors or the Roman people.
Perhaps the best explanation for why the foresight is non-specific is because it might have derived from other sources utilized by Severus: astrology and augury. Severus was the most superstitious of emperors, and Dio tells us that before he committed the family to the British expedition he knew that he did not have long to live (77.11); as his final act he would remove his sons from Rome in hopes of reforming them on one last campaign, by which he would add Britannicus to his list of victory titles.

More than sixty years after the stunning and diverse issues of Augustus, the Romans once again minted cistophori under Claudius, with two short-lived series likely intended for commemorative purposes rather than general circulation. This particular coin, from the first series, is thought to depict the temple of Roma and Augustus in Pergamum, although there is evidence linking this type and the temple of Diana at Ephesus. Such connections suggest that despite the differing reverse designs, all coins were likely struck at a single mint, probably Ephesus, where the second Claudian issue also seems to have been produced. Ithyphallic satyr advancing right, carrying off protesting nymph, her hand showing all five fingers. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. SNG Ashmolean 3660; SNG Copenhagen 1010, Le Rider, Thasiennes 5. SNG Delpierre 822. About extremely fine, struck on a high relief with an excellent grade of the silver. Rarer example from the group Ic perfectly displaying the transitions in style between the typically archaic of the group Ib and the high classical of group II. Instead of V-shaped hand are clearly visible five fingers of the both hands which is even rarer (there are examples where the protesting hand is with five fingers but the second hand is still v-shaped). Very well proportioned bodies with fine portrait of the Satyr full of determination and slightly advanced hair-style according to the clearly archaic type, the Nymph still posses a hair-style near to the archaic, formed by a series of dots. The Satyr is of particulary fascinating and defined muscular body, an impressive biceps and clearly defined breast where even the nipples are perfectly visible over the leg and the stomach of the tightly grabbed Nymph. Very rare and probably the finest specimen known. Among the finest representation of

Prachtexemplar Ataias war König eines der Skythischen Stämme zur Zeit Philipps II. von Makedonien. Unter seiner Herrschaft gelang es ihm, die Macht seines Stammes bis zur Donau

hin auszudehnen, doch im Jahr 339 erlitt er gegen den makedonischen König eine verheerende Niederlage. In den wenigen Jahren bis zur Thronbesteigung des Alexanders III. scheinen die Skythen völlig aus dem Raum südlich der Donau verschwunden zu sein, denn als Alexander gleich nach seiner Herrschaftsergreifung zur Sicherung der

Grenze in den Norden ziehen mußte, traf er auf das Volk der Geten. Diese Mitteilung bringt E. H. Minns in seinem Buch Scythians and Greeks (1913), S. 123 zu der überlegung, ob Ataias nicht ein getischer König war, den die griechischen Quellen nur wegen des Wohnortes seines Stammes für einen Skythen hielten.
