EMPIRE ROMAIN - ROMAN
Vespasien (69-79). Aureus, victoire sur la Judée captive 71, Lyon.
Av. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG TR P. Buste lauré à droite.
Rv. TRIVMP AVG.
Calicó 689a - RIC.- (294, les chevaux à droite) - BMCRE 397 - BN 301 ; Or - 7,19 g - 19,5 mm - 5 h

Lot description:
Mysia. Kyzikos circa 450-330 BC.
Sixth Stater or Hekte EL
12 mm, 2,67 g
Kekrops left, holding branch; below, tunny left / Quadripartite incuse square.
Some marks, otherwise, good very fine
Von Fritze I 158.
Kekrops, the mythological founder and first king of Athens, is a figure deeply embedded in the city's identity. According to legend, he was born from the earth itself, with a form that combined a human upper body and a serpent or fish-tail lower body, symbolizing his connection to the earth and his dual nature as both a human and a chthonic being. Kekrops is a prominent figure in Athenian mythology, notably appearing on Athenian red-figure vases and in the sculpture of the west pediment of the Parthenon.
In one notable myth, Kekrops judged the contest between Athena and Poseidon for the patronage of Athens. Athena's gift of the olive tree was chosen over Poseidon's saltwater spring, leading to her becoming the city's patron goddess. This scene, highlighting the olive tree, symbolizes Athens' prosperity and divine favor.
Interestingly, despite this myth's distinctly Athenian origin, Kekrops appears on the coinage of Kyzikos in Mysia. This can be explained by the close cultural and possibly political ties between Kyzikos and Athens. The depiction of Kekrops holding the olive tree on these coins reflects the shared reverence for Athenian mythology and underscores the influence of Athens in the wider Greek world. The coin itself, with a flan perfectly shaped to fit the design, captures the essence of this legendary figure and his importance in the broader Hellenic culture.
Starting price: 1000 EUR

ILLUSTRAZIONE: Cecrope, divinità ctonia venerata nell’antica Atene. Saluti

Isis-Demeter-Sothis, holding a torch in her right hand, is sitting on the right side on the back of a majestic dog that runs leaping towards the right, turning its head to the left; the goddess wears a chiton, peplos and basileion on her head; below and behind the dog you can see some clouds (?). Very Fine, the best possible for this coin's type.
Ex Giovanni Dattari Collection 929, il Cairo. Ex Naville Numismatics 40, 27.05.2018, lot 365.
It is the best preserved and legible drachm of the three known (see RPC III 4408.1.1/3) where on the rare reverse, it is shown the scene which interprets, in Egyptian theology, the astronomical-astrological association of Isis-Demeter in the star Sothis (the Roman Sirius), the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation, which justifies the depiction of the oversized dog on the coin, while the sidereal and non-earthly dimension of the scene is underlined by the unusual presence of the clouds behind and under the Canis Major. For further information on reverse meaning and iconography, please refer to above mentioned Giovanni Maria Staffieri texts.
