ZEUGITANA. Carthage. Ca. 270-260 BC. AV trihemistater (23mm, 12.45 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU★ 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Head of Tanit left, wreathed with grain ears, wearing triple-pendant earring and pendant necklace / Horse standing right on single ground line, head left. Jenkins & Lewis 380.1 (this coin). The magnificent artistry of this large Carthaginian coin stands out, with wonderfully articulated details beautifully set against scintillating, satin surfaces.
Ex Numismatica Ars Classica, Auction 25 (25 June 2003), lot 130.
Carthage, a Phoenician colony on the coast of North Africa, became a maritime powerhouse in the fifth century BC and challenged the Greek cities of Sicily and Southern Italy for control of the western Mediterranean. Starting in 265 BC, Carthage and Rome fought three titanic wars that produced more death and destruction than any other conflict before the 20th century. This large gold piece, much larger and heavier than contemporary Greek issues of Syracuse, was struck early in the First Punic War with Rome. These impressive coins enticed mercenary soldiers from many nations into Carthaginian service. A powerful head of the Phoenician goddess Tanit adorns the obverse, while a lithe horse, symbolizing the Carthaginian cavalry arm, occupies the reverse.
Estimate: 50000-70000 USD

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Philip III Arrhidaeus (323-317 BC). AV stater (18mm, 8.58 gm, 9h). NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5, Fine Style, brushed. Lifetime issue of Abydus, ca. 323-317 BC. Head of Athena right, hair in three tight corkscrew curls and loose over left shoulder, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, divergent crest ends, the bowl decorated with coiled serpent right / ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟY, Nike standing facing, head left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis cradled in left arm; HM monogram above cornucopia in left field. Price P30. This piece features bright, eye-catching surfaces that put a spotlight the beautiful Fine Style rendering.
Ex Étienne Regnard Collection.
Born ca. 359 BC, Arrhidaeus was the illegitimate son of Philip II, king of Macedon, by a Thessalian dancer. According to Plutarch, a poisoning attempt by Philip's jealous wife, Olympias, left Arrhidaeus intellectually disabled and subject to epileptic fits. When Alexander the Great died in Babylon in June, 323 BC, a council of generals met and determined that Arrhidaeus would be crowned as Philip III, and would reign jointly with the infant Alexander IV. However, neither had any real power, this being held by a succession of Macedonian generals. The new king proved as compliant and simple-minded as the generals had hoped, but in 320 BC, Arrhidaeus married a niece of Philip II's, Eurydice, who had more than enough ambition for the both of them. In 317 BC, she threw her support behind Cassander's successful bid to replace Polyperchon as regent. Cassander, in turn, left her and Arrhidaeus in charge of Macedon while he went on campaign in Asia. Polyperchon joined forces with Alexander's mother, Olympias, and invaded Macedon. Eurydice and Arrhidaeus raised an army to oppose them, but their soldiers refused to fight. Arrhidaeus and Eurydice were captured; Olympias ordered Arrhidaeus to be executed and compelled Eurydice to commit suicide.

HN Italy 260. Aes Grave, E L Haeberlin, 1910, Plate 32. Le Monete Dell' Italia Antica, G Garrucci, 1885. Pleasing light green and brown patina; exceptional style for the type.
Ex Gerhard Hirsch Münzhandlung, Auction 60 (2-4 Dec 1968), lot 402.
Extremely rare (R5) – only two full bar specimen (British Museum and a museum in Naples) are shown in literature. Both were in Garrucci's 1885 book. Haeberlin includes three partial bars (765, 573, and 353 gm). Sotheby's auctioned one of the partial bars when they sold the Virgil Brand Collection, Part Three (9 June 1983), lot 193.
XRF analysis averages testing the center and edges: 87% copper, ~3% lead, ~3% zinc, ~3% tin. The lower concentrations of tin and lead, and higher zinc, leads to a later date in the series.
Historical research assistance and XRF data analysis generously provided by noted Roman Republican bronze scholar Gene McPherson.
Lot description from the Hirsch catalog: According to expertise from the Centre de Recherches de L'Histoire et de la Siderurgie in Jarville, the specimen has all the characteristics of an old piece because of the small traces of corrosion seen there. The expertise of the aforementioned institute from 31 July 1968 is supported by an assessment of the Staatlichen Münzsammlung München from 12 August 1968, which concurs with the verdict that the two pieces are originals (referring to Lot 401 in the same sale, which was another Aes Signatum bar but from the Heavy Series).

Lot description:
KINGS OF SOPHENE. Arsames, circa 255-225 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 20 mm, 6.92 g, 9 h). Head of Arsames to right, wearing bashlyk with beaded edges, tied with a diadem. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ / APΣAMOY Arsames, wearing conical tiara, on horseback to right, hurling javelin at two attacking soldiers; below his horse, a third, fallen enemy. Kovacs 1. An exceptional example of this earliest Armenian issue, with a beautiful reverse and very likely the finest known. Minor adjustment marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
While earlier authors, based on the different headgear depicted on the coins, posited two kings named Arsames, Kovacs assumes only one such ruler of that name. He divides the coinage of this Arsames, the founder of Arsamosata, Arsameia on the Euphrates, and Arsameia on the Nymphaios, into an early and a late group, with the early one supposed to depict the king wearing a pointed bashlyk and the late one with a conical tiara. However, the exceptionally detailed reverse of our coin unambiguously shows that the king also wears the conical tiara in the depicted battle scene. While this confirms Kovacs' assertion that the coins should be attributed to only one Arsames, it also challenges his division into two temporally distinct groups.
Apparently, Arsames used the different headgear simultaneously, an observation also emphasized by Kovacs 3, a coin type showing Arsames with the pointed tiara, whose reverse, however, resembles more Kovacs 5 (with conical tiara) due to the vertical legends. Simultaneously, the reverse of Kovacs 4, with the horizontal legend and the king in armor on horseback to right, despite the conical tiara on the obverse, certainly belongs to Kovacs 1-2 iconographically. Hence, all evidence points towards the simultaneous adoption of two distinct headgears by the king, rendering Kovacs' proposal of a tumultuous early reign of Arsames, succeeded by a more stable later reign, obsolete.
