Lot description:
Mysia, Kyzicus, c. 400 BC. Silver Tetradrachm (14.28 g). Head of Kore Soteira left, wreathed with grain, veil wound around hair, wearing ampyx, triple pendant earring, and pearl necklace. Reverse: Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding phiale in extended right hand and kithara in left, feet resting on tunny fish left, monograms in lower left field and in lower right field. Cf. SNG Paris 414 (right monogram varies). Rare. A handsome tetradrachm struck in high relief. Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $5,000 - UP Situated adjacent to the mouth of the river Aisepos on the southwest shore of the Propontis, Kyzikos was purported to be the first in a long line of Milesian colonies. The city possessed two fine harbors, both contributing greatly to its growth and prosperity. Traders plying the routes between the Aegean and Black Seas often stopped at Kyzikos to load tunnies, a main export as the fish were plentiful in the waters thereabouts. The earliest coinage of Kyzikos was struck in electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver. However, by the fifth century BC, although electrum was still used to facilitate trade with the coastal cities of the northeastern Black Sea littoral, Kyzikos had also adopted the use of gold and silver for its coinage, appealing to its Greek market. On this magnificent tetradrachm stuck on the Rhodian standard, the obverse sports a large bust of the goddess Kore-Soteira, the "maiden saviour" goddess Persephone, her hair bound with a large band of cloth known as an ampyx and wreathed with grain ears. The reverse shows the god Apollo, seated upon the omphalos (Greek: navel or center), a boulder from Delphi which was criss-crossed with fillets and thought to be the center of the world, having his lyre within handy reach beside him and his feet resting on the symbol of the city, the tunny fish. LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 350-340 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 7.88 g, 1 h), "signed" with the initial Α on the obverse and reverse. Head of Athena to left, wearing Attic helmet adorned with a figure of Skylla raising her right hand in the gesture of aposkopein on the bowl and an owl standing right on the neck guard; below neck, Α. Rev. ͰΗΡΑΚΛΗΙΩΝ Herakles, nude, standing right and strangling the struggling Nemean lion with both hands; to left, club and bow; above left, Α. AMB 108 = Kraay-Hirmer 256 (same dies). Gillet Plates 121 (this coin). HN III 1376. SNG Spencer Churchill 13 (this coin). Van Keuren 42. Work 24a (this coin) . A beautifully toned coin of the finest Classical style, very well-struck and well-centered. Nearly extremely fine.
Ex Peus 366, 29 October 2000, 12, Leu Numismatics 77, 11 May 2000, 43 and Numismatics Fine Arts V, 23 February 1978, from the collections of C. Gillet, E. G. Spencer Churchill, Ars Classica XVI, 3 July 1933, 128, S. Pozzi, Naville I, 4 April 1921, 127, H. C. Hoskier, Hirsch XX, 13 November 1907, 46 (bought for Pozzi by Rollin & Feuardent for RM 735), E. P. Warren, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge 2 May 1905 ("Well-Known Collector"), 47 and H. Hoffmann, Rollin & Feuardent 17 May 1900, 98.

Aside from its present owner, this coin has been owned by several of the greatest connoisseur-collectors of the Twentieth Century! We can trace it back to 1897 to the private collection of the French dealer Henri Hoffmann, which means that it must have been in a collection no later than the last quarter of the 19th century. The letter Α which appears on the obverse, under the neck truncation, and the reverse, behind Herakles's head, has been taken by many to be the signature of the engraver Aristoxenos who primarily worked at Metapontum. Given the quality of the dies that struck this coin, this possibility seems quite reasonable.

Estimate: 12500 CHF

Lot description:
Cilicia, Nagidos, c. 375-365 BC. AR Stater (10.71 g). Aphrodite enthroned left, holding phiale over circular altar before her; behind her, Eros standing left, holding up branch. Reverse: Dionysos standing left, holding thyrsos and vine branch with grapes. Lederer 26; cf. BMC p. 111, 12 (same obverse die). Excellent metal. Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP Little is known about the Cilician city of Nagidos beyond that it was considered a Samian foundation, had an eponymous hero named Nagis, and was incorporated into the Achaemenid Persian Empire perhaps as early as 545 BC. In the Classical period the city and the rest of Cilicia was governed by Persian satraps. The coinage of Nagidos and other Cilician cities of the period is notable for the frequent use of full figure designs on both sides of the coin. Here Aphrodite is depicted on the obverse, which has been taken as an indication that the city had an important temple dedicated to the Greek goddess of love, but it is just as possible that this type refers to the cult of the Persian deity, Anahita, which was often brought to Asia Minor by Persian officials and who was frequently identified with Aphrodite by the Greeks. The reverse depicts Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, shown holding a bunch of grapes and his staff, the pinecone-tipped thyrsos. The dies used to strike this particular coin are the most commonly scene in the series; the obverse is notable for the thin die-break extending from the edge of the coin to Aphrodite's phiale. Michael I Rhangabe was a Byzantine Emperor who ruled from AD 811 to 813. He was born around AD 770 and belonged to the prestigious Rhangabe family. Michael ascended to the throne after the death of his father-in-law, Emperor Nikephoros I, as he had married Prokopia, the daughter of Nikephoros.
During his reign he proclaimed his son Theophylactus as co-emperor. Also,he recognized Charlemagne as emperor and addressed religious issues with the Iconoclasts and Paulicians. He faced defeat in battle against the Bulgarians, leading to his abdication and subsequent life as a monk until his death in AD 844. His sons followed suit, becoming monks and ineligible for the throne.

Anokhin 1021. HGC 7, 20. SNG BM Black Sea 867. Gulbenkian 590. The magnificently styled, fresh dies, showcase beautifully on this bright and lustrous example. A stunning coin in hand.
Starting out as a Greek trading post on the northern Black Sea coast settled by Milesian pioneers in the 7th century BC, Panticapaeum soon grew into a thriving city and home to the Spartocid kings - dynastic Greek rulers of the Bosporus. The city's fabulous wealth derived from its fertile grain fields and the thriving fishing industry of the northern Black Sea, all leading to a rich trade with the cities of mainland Greece and Asia Minor. This wealth is attested by its gold coins, which are typically larger and weightier than contemporary Greek gold pieces, and depict a wild-eyed satyr thought to represent the city's patron god and namesake, Pan. Here, Pan is shown with an expression evoking his role in sowing discord and fear (hence the term "panic") in enemy armies. While categorized as a mythological creature today, the griffin depicted on the reverse was very real to the Greeks of the Thracian hinterland, where it was thought to live. Griffins were said to be highly covetous of gold, a trait carried over into medieval conceptions of the dragon.

Otacilia Severa. Augusta, AD 244-249. Æ Sestertius (26mm, 19.09 g, 12h). Ludi Saeculares (Secular Games) issue, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Rome. Rome mint, 4th officina. 9th emission of Philip I, AD 248. Draped bust right, wearing stephane / Hippopotamus standing right. RIC IV 200a (Philip I); Banti 13. Dark brown patina, minor roughness on obverse. Good VF. A wonderful Hippopotamus.
Ex Classical Numismatic Group 87 (18 May 2011), lot 1104.
Continuing the tradition of Claudius and Antoninus Pius before him, the celebration of the Secular Games at the end of every century since the founding of Rome culminated during the reign of Philip I, as the city celebrated her 1,000th anniversary in AD 248. The legends on these issues almost exclusively read SAECVLARES AVGG, and feature a similar iconography from previous games, such as the she-wolf suckling the twins, the various wild beasts paraded through the amphitheater, and a cippus inscribed for the preservation of the memory of these events.
Estimate: 500 USD

Lot description:
LYDIA. Saitta. Clodius Albinus, as Caesar, 193-195. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 29 mm, 16.48 g, 5 h), Androneikos, son of Iollas Kratistos Stephanophoros and first archon for the second time, late 193-195. KΛΩ•CЄΠ• - •ΑΛBЄINOC K-AICAP Bare head of Clodius Albinus to right. Rev. ЄΠI•ANΔPONЄIK-OY APX A CAITT/HN-ΩN Aphrodite, nude, standing front, head to left; to left, winged cupid standing right, presenting torch; to right, dolphin swimming downwards. GRPC Lydia 98 = NAC 80 (2014), 125 (same dies, but badly tooled). Imhoof-Blumer, Lydische Stadtmünzen, p. 129, 7. SNG München 440 (same dies). Extremely rare and very likely the finest known example. A beautiful coin with a spectacular portrait and a very interesting reverse. Very light porosity, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
Ex Leu 11, 14 May 2022, 196 and previously from a European collection, formed before 2005.
As governor of Britain, Albinus refrained from claiming the throne for himself following Pertinax' murder on 28 March 193 and instead allied himself with Septimius Severus, the legate of Pannonia, who invaded Italy and deposed Pertinax' successor, Didius Julianus, in June 193. Septimius appointed Albinus to the rank of Caesar, thereby accepting him as his designated successor to have free rein to deal with Pescennius Niger, the governor of Syria, who had also made a bid for power. This was a wise move on behalf of Septimius, gaining him a strong ally in the West while campaigning in the East, where his generals defeated Niger in three subsequent battles in late 193 and 194.
With Italy, the Balkans, Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt now under his firm control, Albinus' value for the new emperor vanished, all the more as Septimius had two sons and thus intended to found his own imperial dynasty. It is not entirely clear who commenced hostilities, but the two massive armies of the pretenders eventually clashed in February 196 (or 197) in the Battle of Lugdunum, one of the largest battles in Roman history. After a fierce fight, Septimius prevailed and Albinus was killed on the battlefield, ending three years of civil wars and reuniting the empire under a single banner.
With the East of the empire either under control of Septimius Severus or of Pescennius Niger, only very few provincial mints issued coins in the name of Septimius' Caesar Albinus. In the case of Saitta, this can only have occurred after Septimius' successes against Pescennius Niger in late 193 and early 194, when Asia Minor fell to the victor, and perhaps reflects the desire of local authorities to assure Septimius Severus and his co-emperor Clodius Albinus of the loyalty of the city and in so doing avoid punishment for the previous support of Niger (see lot 125 above). The wonderful craftmanship displayed on this coin is typical for Saitta early in Septimius' reign, which is all the more remarkable considering the turmoil of the years 193-195 and the rarity of Clodius Albinus' provincial coinage. The city must have taken great care to hire a prime available artist for its Severan coinage, resulting in a spectacular portrait of Clodius Albinus that rivals the finest output of the imperial mint in Rome.
Estimate: 10000 CHF
