Classical Numismatic Group, Triton VII, lot 88, 12/01/2004

SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. AV Tetralitron (3.47 gm). Struck circa 406 AD.
Estimate $75000
SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. AV Tetralitron (3.47 gm). Struck circa 406 AD. SURAKOSION around broad rim of circular shield ornamented with a facing gorgoneion / Ephebos, in the form of a naked athlete, standing left, holding strigil in his right hand with which he is removing oil from his left knee. C. Boehringer, "Ehrenrettung einer syrakusanischen Goldmünze" in FlorNum, pg. 74, 1 (V1/R1); C. Boehringer, "Zu Finanzpolitik und Münzprägung des Dionysios von Syrakus" in Essays Thompson, pl. 38, 11 (same obverse die); SNG ANS -; SNG Lloyd -; SNG Copenhagen -; Jameson -; Rizzo -; Gulbenkian -; Pozzi -; Weber -; De Luynes 1402 (same obverse die). Choice EF, slight graze on athlete's face. Extremely rare, one of only eight specimens known, and one of only three in private hands. [See color enlargement on plate 2] ($75,000)
From the James A. Ferrendelli Collection. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 18 (29 March 2000), lot 128; Numismatica Ars Classica 7 (2-3 March 1994), lot 203.
This coin type, the subject of Boehringer's study in FlorNum, is one of the most exquisite examples of numismatic art in the classical period. The obverse shield is certainly influenced by the shield held by the sitting Athena found on the balustrade of the temple of Athena-Nike on the Akropolis at Athens. Boehringer points-out that the die used for the present coin (V1) is the most similar to this sculpture. He regards the reverse of an athlete (an unprecedented motif in Sicilian numismatics) as masterful and lifelike, and compares this image to two contemporary gemstones from Greece and Etruria that reside in the Oxford and Berlin museums.

Ero bambino e nella mia stanza  mio padre mi mise questa statua, avendo le altre stanze già colme, ovviamente in dimensioni accettabili, mi accompagno per un lungo periodo, e prima di addormentarmi era il mio eroe...

Ovviamente meraviglioso tondello e stupendo ritratto.

Roma Numismatics Ltd > Auction XVII Auction date: 28 March 2019
Lot number: 685

Lot description:
Julius Caesar AR Denarius. Rome, January-February 44 BC. Lifetime issue. P. Sepullius Macer, moneyer. CAESAR DICT PERPETVO, wreathed head of Caesar right / P•SEPVLLIVS MACER, Venus standing left, holding Victory, and sceptre resting on star. Crawford 480/11; RSC Sepullia 4; CRI 107b. 3.67g, 21mm, 10h.
Extremely Fine; a minute scratch beneath the portrait and some minor areas of weakness. A superb portrait of Caesar, of fine style and centrally struck.
Acquired from Leu Numismatik AG;
Ex Yves Gunzenreiner Collection, and reportedly from a French collection of the early 20th century.
In the years of his supremacy, Caesar had amassed unprecedented power by corrupting the institutions of the old Republic to his own requirements. First appointed Dictator in 49 BC by the Praetor (and future Triumvir) Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, possibly in order to preside over elections, Caesar resigned his Dictatorship within eleven days but in 48 BC he was appointed Dictator again, only this time for an indefinite period, and was also given permanent tribunician powers making his person sacrosanct and allowing him to veto the Senate. In 46 BC he was appointed Dictator for ten years, and he gave himself quasi-censorial powers under the mantle of 'Prefect of the Morals', enabling him to fill the Senate with his partisans who duly voted him the titles of Pater Patriae and Imperator. He increased the number of magistrates who were elected each year, thus allowing him to reward his supporters, and in October 45 BC, having served in the unconstitutional role of Sole Consul for that year, Caesar resigned his consulship and facilitated the election of two successors for the remainder of the year - theoretically restoring the ordinary consulship, but in practice submitting the Consuls to the Dictatorial executive - a practice that later become common under the Empire. In February 44 BC, one month before his assassination, Caesar was appointed Dictator for life.
More followed; he was given the unprecedented honour of having his own likeness placed upon the Roman coinage, his statue was placed next to those of the kings, he was granted a golden chair in the Senate, and was permitted to wear triumphal dress whenever he chose. Then, at the festival of the Lupercal, Marc Antony presented Caesar with a royal diadem, and attempted to place it on his head. Yet for all these hideous affronts to the ancient institutions of the Republic and the sensibilities of the Roman people, perhaps his most egregious reform was the law he passed in preparation for his planned campaign against the Parthian Empire. Realising that his absence from Rome would impede his ability to install his own men in positions of power and that therefore his back would be exposed while away from the city, Caesar decreed that he would have the right to appoint all magistrates in 43 BC, and all consuls and tribunes in 42 BC, thus at a stroke transforming the magistrates from being representatives of the people to being representatives of the dictator.
The obverse of this coin presents a bold portrait of the dictator in the final months of his life, wearing the corona civica Caesar had won while serving in the army of M. Minucius Thermus at the Siege of Mytilene in 81 BC.
Estimate: 20000 GBP

Good very fine.
The resemblance of this seal with the Zacos I 1375 of the Cubicularios Andreas, can lead us to the assumption that both seals are from the same person. If this is correct, then the seal in the present auction should be a little later than the one in Triton, after Andreas was promoted from Cubicularios to General.

Sicily. Gela. c. 339-310 BC. AE, 12.97g. (h). Obv: Hero, naked but for crested helmet and chlamys, standing left, holding sword in order to sacrifice the ram in front of him. Rx: Horse prancing to right. Above, eight-rayed star. Jenkins, Group XIII, 552. SNG ANS 126. SNG Morcom 592. Calciati I, p. 20, 61. Rare. Greenish brown patina and of exceptional quality. About EF.
Rams were the favored sacrificial victim in heroic cults. In contrast to sacrifices for gods, the animal was not killed on an altar but in a pit. The blood was not spread over the altar for the gods to enjoy but was to seep down into the earth, where the deceased heroes were thought to dwell. Here the hero who is being worshipping is sacrificing himself, just as the gods themselves are often depicted performing a sacrifice, particularly in late archaic and early classical vase painting .

Roma Numismatics Ltd > Auction XVII Auction date: 28 March 2019
Lot number: 626
Lot description:
Augustus and Agrippa Æ As of Nemausus, Gaul. Circa AD 10-14. Heads of Agrippa and Augustus back to back, Agrippa wearing rostral crown and laurel wreath, facing left, Augustus laureate, facing right; IMP above, DIVI F below, P-P across lower fields / Chained crocodile right, palm frond upwards in centre, wreath to left of palm tip with long ties trailing to right; COL-NEM across fields. RPC I 525; RIC 159. 13.86g, 28mm, 5h.
Extremely Fine; an attractive brown patina with hints of red and green. In exceptional condition for the type.
Ex Osaka Collection, Hess-Divo AG, Auction 334, 29 May 2018, lot 92 (professionally cleaned and conserved since).
This artistically fascinating and typologically unique type refers directly to the victory of Octavian (as was) and Agrippa at Actium over the forces of Cleopatra VII and Marc Antony, and to the settlement of veterans in Nemausus. The crocodile, collared around the neck and chained to a palm on the reverse of this coin is a clear reference to the subjugation of Egypt, thus obliquely referring also to Antony and Cleopatra; the wreath above with ties fluttering in the breeze is a reminder that the war was both just and necessary, with the victory having brought about the deliverance and salvation of the Roman people and the state. It is noteworthy also that the portraits of Agrippa and Augustus on the obverse are presented on the same level and back to back, at once recalling the ancient Janiform types once so prevalent on the Roman coinage, and also presenting princeps and general as inseparable and heroic partners - the one adorned with a wreath of laurel, the other with a rostral wreath in recognition for his naval victories.
Estimate: 3000 GBP
