Gemini, Auction VI, lot 17, 10/01/2010

Sicily. Entella under the Campanian mercenaries. c. 404-350 BC. AE 20, 8.88g. Obv: ΕΝΤ-ΕΛΛΑ Head of Persephone facing right, wearing grain-wreath, ear-pendant, and necklace. Rx: Κ-ΑΜΠ-ΑΝΩΝ Pegasos flying to left. Beneath forelegs, Corinthian helmet right. SNG ANS 1326. AMB 277. Laffaille 139. SNG Morcom 581. Calciati I 318, 4 var. Olive patination. Flatly struck at the highest point of the hair, otherwise EF.
Interestingly, the symbol on the reverse is a Corinthian helmet. The usual symbol of the Campanian mercenaries is a helmet of the so-called Campanian type (see Calciati, p. 318). The Corinthian type went out of use soon after the Persian wars, as the offerings at Olympia show. Thereafter, the Corinthian helmet was kept only as one of the paraphernalia of the goddess Athena and - more interestingly - of the heroes. Hero-worship is a striking feature among the mercenaries. So this variant of the issue might refer to religious rites rather than to the usual equipment and self-representation of the Campanians in Dionysios I's and his Carthaginian opponents' armies.
Estimate: US$500

($2000) From the David Simpson Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Auction XXIV (9 December 1992), lot 497. Same obverse die as the following lot.
Before the birth of her second son, Hekaba, wife of King Priam of Troy, dreamed that she had brought forth a flaming firebrand that destroyed the city, and the new-born child was therefore exposed on Mount Ida. Brought up by a shepherd, he was called Paris, and later, by his courage, earned the name Alexander or 'defender of men'. He was beloved by the nymph Oenone, but he deserted her as a result of a tempting suggestion by Aphrodite which led to the Judgement of Paris. When Hermes came to Mount Ida with the three goddesses he called Paris and said to him: "Come here and decide which is the more excellent beauty of face, and to the fairer give this apple's lovely fruit." (Colluthus, The Rape of Helen 130). While Paris reflected, the goddesses, who for the occasion had bathed their immortal bodies, offered him bribes in order to win the apple award of beauty: Athena offered him the command of Phrygia and the destruction of Hellas, or as some say, that he would be bravest of mortals and skilled in every craft. Likewise Hera offered him, besides wealth, the dominion over Asia and Europe. But Aphrodite offered him the hand of Helen, whose beauty was famous worldwide, and this bribe won the apple.

Roma Numismatics Ltd > E-Sale 53 Auction date: 7 February 2019
Lot number: 731
Trajan AR Denarius. Rome, AD 114-117. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GERM DAC, laureate and draped bust right / P M TR P COS VI P P S P Q R / Trajan's column, surmounted with statue of emperor; at base, two eagles; bas reliefs on pedestal. RIC 356; BMCRE 565; RSC 284. 3.49g, 20mm, 7h.
Extremely Fine; light porosity. Sharply detailed reverse.
Ex Michael Kelly Collection of Roman Silver Coins; collector's ticket included.
This reverse type depicts Trajan's Column, one of the most visible and iconic monuments of ancient Rome that survives today. Built to commemorate the Dacian campaign, and using the spoils of war, it was completed in AD 113 and featured on the coinage of that year and the next.
The continuous sculptural frieze that decorates the column, which illustrates the major campaigns of the war, would have been visible from the balconies of the buildings at the northern end of Trajan's Forum, and therefore easier to read than they are today from ground level. The column was originally capped by a statue of the Emperor, though with this having disappeared during the medieval period a bronze statue of St. Peter was placed there in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V, and remains today.
After his death in AD 117, the Senate voted to place the ashes of Trajan and his wife Plotina in golden urns in the base of the column.

ILLUSTRAZIONE: ARCIERE SIRIANO AUSILIARIO DELL'ESERCITO ROMANO

Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. An historically and important
issue, a bold portrait and a superb reverse composition. Wonderful and
almost intact green patina. Extremely fine / good extremely fine
Ex Sternberg XIV, 1984, 326; NAC 9, 1996, 867 and NAC 18, 2000, 528 sales.
This reverse of this sestertius depicts the emperor addressing the troops (adlocutio in Latin), which he did on important occasions and which finds it numismatic expression since the time of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. While on early adlocutio scenes the troops in question are often the Praetorian Guard whose support was necessary for the stable reign of an emperor, here Hadrian is shown speaking to the Dacian Army, as is indicated by the legend the exercitus dacicus and represented by three standard bearers. The one closest to the emperor is the aquilifer who carries the legionary eagle (aquila), followed by the vexillarius who carries a standard topped with a banner (vexillum), and behind him a signifer who carries a standard adorned with metal disks (the signum). While aquilifers and vexillarii marched as the focal point for entire legions, the signifer marched before the individual cohorts that composed the legion.
Dated to the period AD 134-138, the adlocutio represented on this coin must indicate an otherwise undocumented visit to the Dacian limes (frontier forts) or, at the least, an intended visit at this time. As such, it may be included as an adjunct to Hadrian's much-beloved travel series of coins depicting the provinces and cities he visited on his several tours throughout the empire. Earlier in his reign, Hadrian had reorganized the Dacian territories so recently conquered by his predecessor, Trajan, giving up to the Roxolani Sarmatians to rule as a client kingdom on behalf of Rome much of the Dacian territory that had been added to Moesia Inferior. Trajan's sweeping conquests along the Danube frontier as well as in the East had greatly extended Rome's borders, but Hadrian correctly saw the impractical nature of the additional strain this imposed on the Empire and quickly shored them.

The Prospero Collection of Ancient Greek Coins. MYSIA. Kyzikos (c.450-400 B.C.), Electrum Stater, 16.11g. Male figure (Odysseus?), wearing a pilos and a chlamys, kneeling to left, in the act of sacrificing a ram, a tunny below. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square of mill-sail pattern (W. Greenwell, ‘The Electrum Coinage of Cyzicus’, NC 1887, 71, pl. III, 22; Von Fritze, Nomisma VII, 156, pl. V, 4). A fascinating mythological type, well-centred on a broad flan, toned, very f ine. Purchased from Spink & Son Ltd., London, 16 April 1988 The identity of the figure on the obverse of this coin has been widely debated. It has been suggested that it could be Phrixos, in the act of sacrificing the ram with the golden fleece. However, on the basis of the pilos, Odysseus, shown sacrificing the animal provided by Circe before his descent into Hades, has also been suggested. US$ 20,000
