MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Commodus. AD 177-192. Æ 26mm (7.70 g, 1h). Bareheaded and draped bust right / The Three Graces, arm in arm: the first with head right, holding wreath, the second with head left, and the third with head left, holding amphora. Hristova & Jekov 6.10.26.2 var. (obv. legend); Moushmov -; Varbanov -. Good VF, dark green patina, light scratches.
From the Mark Staal Collection of the Three Graces.
The Three Graces (or Charities) were goddesses of beauty, charm, and amusement, the embodiment of loveliness in all its aspects. Although their names varied from place to place, the most commonly encountered are Aglaea (“Beauty”), Euphrosyne (“Cheer”), and Thalia (“Flowering”). Over time an artistic convention of depicting the Graces developed: the three deities were shown undraped, each with one arm placed on the figure adjacent to them, the central figure standing facing the opposite direction as the others. This is the convention that one finds in numismatic depictions of the goddesses.
CNG is proud to offer the current selection from the Mark Staal Collection of the Three Graces. This subject not only served as a theme in building a collection, but also as an area of scholarly pursuit for Staal, and many of his coins in this sale have been published in his monograph The Three Graces and their Numismatic Mythology (Santa Clara. 2004 [available for purchase through CNG]). As numismatic depictions of the Three Graces appeared most often on Roman Provincial (Greek Imperial) coinage, the majority of this offering can be found below in the Provincial section. See also lots 65, 66, and 109 of the Greek section and lot 360 of the Roman Imperial section for additional coins from the Staal Collection. Further offerings will be made available in our spring Mail Bid sale and upcoming internet auctions.

EGYPT, Pharaonic Kingdom. Nektanebo II. 361-343 BC. AV Stater (17mm, 8.23 g, 12h). Horse prancing right / Hieroglyphic representation of "good gold": pectoral necklace (nebew = "gold") crossing horizontally over a windpipe and heart (nefer = "good"). FF-BD 2g (D1/R2 – this coin); SNG Berry 1459 (same obv. die); SNG Copenhagen 1 (same dies); ACGC 1064 (same dies); Adams III 2075 (same obv. die); Hunt I 106 (same obv. die); Zhuyuetang 121 (same dies). Near EF, lightly toned, a little off center on obverse.
From the Collection of a Northern California Gentleman. Ex Josey Collection (Sotheby's New York, 8 December 1992), lot 67.
One of the great (and very popular) rarities for ancient gold coinage collectors is the gold stater (or daric?) issued by the Egyptian Pharaoh Nektanebo II. The authors of the die study cited above could account for only 42 examples struck from 3 obverse and 3 reverse dies with 5 die combinations. They also listed 5 examples from the Mit Rahineh hoard (IGCH 1658) that they could not examine for their die study. The attribution to Nektanebo II is based primarily on circumstantial historical evidence and not the coins themselves, which do not bear any specific ethnic or monogram.
Nekht-har-hebi, or Nektanebo II as he was known to the Greeks, was the nephew of the Pharaoh Tachos (Djedhor). Placed in command of the Egyptian army in Syria during the Satrapal Revolt, he turned his troops against his own king, and uncle, and took Egypt by force. In 351-350 BC, he repelled a Persian invasion but was driven from his throne in 344-343 by a second assault. He then fled Egypt and found refuge in Ethiopia and retained control of Upper Egypt for another few years.
Nektanebo most likely would have issued his gold staters to pay the mercenaries in his army. What makes the coinage of Nektanebo stand out is the adoption of a purely Egyptian design. This is the only known ancient coinage to employ a hieroglyph – a purely Egyptian coin.

Lot description:
PHRYGIA. Prymnessus. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Assarion (Orichalcum, 22 mm, 5.61 g, 7 h), time of Gallienus, 253-268. MIΔAC BACIΛЄYC Draped and cuirassed bust of King Midas to right, wearing Phrygian cap decorated with stars. Rev. ΠPYMNHCCIЄΩN (sic!) Dikaiosyne standing front, head to left, holding scales in her right hand and grain ears in her left. SNG Copenhagen 663 corr. (same dies, but I in reverse legend overlooked). SNG von Aulock 3938 var. (differing reverse legend). Von Aulock, Phrygien II, 962-967 (same dies). Rare. A remarkably attractive example of this interesting issue. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
The obverse of this coin shows us the Phrygian King Midas, who is best known for his 'Golden Touch': when Midas was offered a reward of his choice by Dionysos for his hospitable treatment of the god's drunken foster father Silenos, the greedy King wished for everything he touched to be turned into gold. However, Midas soon realized that the divine gift was in fact a curse, as he was now unable to eat or drink. Starving and dying of thirst, he beseeched Dionysos: 'Father Lenaios, forgive me! We have sinned. But have pity on me, I beg you, and save me from this costly evil!' (Ovid met. XI, 133.4). The merciful god forgave the King, and he ordered him to wash himself in the spring of the Paktolos to hand the divine power over to the river, which thus explained its richness of alluvial gold that was used to strike the early Lydian electrum coinage.
Estimate: 750 CHF

LESBOS. Mytilene. Ca. 377-326 BC. EL sixth stater or hecte (10mm, 2.54 gm, 1h). NGC XF 4/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Head of bearded male right, possibly the dynast Diogenes of Mytilene or the Athenian adventurer Chares / Head of young male right, possibly prince Paris, wearing Phrygian cap. Bodenstedt 102. Particularly problem-free surfaces with subtle toning and two handsome portraits.
Very rare obverse type, apparently occurring on just this one die, and one of the very few portraits of a living person on a Greek coin struck before the death of Alexander the Great of Macedon. Two identifications of obverse figure seem possible - Diogenes or Chares. Diogenes was leader of the Mytilenean oligarchs, until expelled in 334 BC, but was reinstalled by the Persians as tyrant of Mytilene the next year. Lost to history is whether he was still alive and ruling in 332 BC when Mytilene was occupied by the Macedonian army. Chares of Athens supported Demosthenes' anti-Macedonian party, but then fled Athens to the Persians soon after the battle of Chaeronea. He welcomed Alexander the Great at the city of Ilium but then rejoined the Persians soon thereafter. Occupying Mytilene with 2,000 Persian soldiers, Chares surrendered to a Macedonian general and then disappears from history.
