Perseo promise al re Polidette la testa della Gorgone come dono di nozze ed egli, convinto che non sarebbe riuscito nell’impresa, accettò. Perseo ebbe l’aiuto di Atena, la quale gli diede uno scudo; delle ninfe che gli donarono dei calzari alati, la kirbis e il mantello dell’invisibilità, e, infine, di Mercurio, che gli diede un falcetto. Egli riuscì a uccidere la Gorgone, che aveva uno sguardo capace di pietrificare un uomo, guardandola riflessa nello scudo. Dopo averle tagliato la testa, che mantenne il potere pietrificante, dal suo sangue sgorgò Pegaso, il mitico cavallo alato.

Die Legio XVIII ging im Jahre 9 n. Chr. in der Varusschlacht in Kalkriese bei Osnabrück unter. Diese Schlacht verlor P. Quinctilius Varus gegen eine Koalition germanischer Stämme unter der Führung des Cheruskerfürsten Arminius - etwa 25.000 römische Soldaten fanden den Tod. Zu den Toten gehörte auch M. Caelius, ein Centurio der 18. Legion, dessen in Xanten gefundener Grabstein bis heute den einzigen epigraphischen Beleg für die Varuskatastrophe darstellt.
Den Adler der Legio XVIII konnten römische Truppen einige Jahre später entweder von den Marsern (Tac. Ann. II, 25) oder den Chaukern (Cass. Dio LX 8, 7) zurückgewinnen.

Extremely rare- only two specimens in the Enna hoard; one of perhaps five or fewer in existence. Hairline flan crack. Well struck from dies of exceptional style and attractively toned. Good extremely fine. This coin is a famous type featuring an elephant, the animal used by the great general Hannibal Barca to bring the Second Punic War over the Alps and into Rome's backyard, and a mysterious and quite distinctive laureate head. The head has been variously described in the literature as a depiction of Herakles-Melqart, a Semitic deity inherited by the Carthaginians from their Tyrian mother city, or Hannibal in the guise of the god. Modern scholarship, which tends to be suspicious of early claims to see portraits in images of gods tends to interpret the head as that of Herakles-Melqart. However, the distinct physiognomy of the nose and other facial features, as well as the sideburns, seem to suggest an attempt at portraiture. In such a case it is difficult to avoid the possibility that Hannibal is actually depicted here - remarkable considering that no other portraits of the great Carthaginian general survive from his lifetime.

Domitian, togate, standing r., shaking hand with a soldier standing l.; between them, garlanded altar and in the background, two further soldiers, one holding shield and spear, the other carrying a standard; behind the altar, a second standard. Rare. A magnificent portrait of fine style and an interesting and finely-detailed
reverse composition. Wonderful untouched green patina with some minor
encrustations, otherwise extremely fine Ex M&M sale 92, 2002, 62.
The representation on the reverse of this issue is a very controversial one. For some it depicts the arrival in Rome of the general Agricola due to the fact that the scene is first shown in the same year in which Domitian had to recall the British general. In reality the theme has a much more general meaning: in ca. 85 AD the Dacians started to invade the Roman province of Moesia. The Roman army was seriously defeated, comparable to the defeats of P. Quinctilius Varus in AD 9. From all over the empire troops were sent to Moesia, in the end 9 legions were stationed against the Dacians. In this context the Concordia between the emperor and his army is seen, the handshake over the burning altar remembers the oath of allegiance. How important the harmony in the army was, is shown by the defection of Antonius Saturnius, legate for the Upper Rhine. This defection forced Domitian in AD 89 to agree to an unsatisfactory peace agreement with the Dacians; but this agreement would not last for more than a couple of years.

La testuggine, o Testudo, era una formazione di fanteria caratteristica dell’esercito romano che richiedeva una perfetta coordinazione di gruppo. Questa formazione di combattimento era ideata appositamente per un drappello di legionari armati con i tipici grandi scudi rettangolari che avevano in dotazione, e naturalmente con il gladio.
Questo complesso schieramento, se ben applicato, offriva un grande vantaggio ai legionari romani, primo fra tutti, portarsi a contatto con le prime file nemiche al riparo da dardi e proiettili di vario tipo, in secondo luogo, nascondeva al nemico l’effettivo numero di soldati con cui avrebbero avuto a che fare di li a poco, generando un effetto sorpresa tutto favorevole alle armate romane.
La grande protezione che offriva questo tipo di schieramento consentiva alla Testuggine romana di essere usata efficacemente in tutti gli assedi messi in atto.

Justin II (565-578). Justinian's nephew, Justin II sadly was not equal to maintaining or handling the products of his uncle's policies. During his reign most of Italy was lost to the Lombards, while in the East, a protracted war with the Sassanians began. When the emperor went insane in 574, the Count of the Excubitores Tiberius was appointed regent.

Probabilmente il cavaliere raffigurato al rovescio potrebbe essere Dardano, il mitico fondatore della città di Cora.

Ex Giessener Münzhandlung, München, Auktion 69, 1994, 149. Unfortunately, we are still unaware of the exact location where this coin was struck. Octodrachms with the same design bearing the legend BIΣAΛTΩN can be clearly attributed to the Bisaltae tribe, located on the lower Strymon river near the Thracian people. This area had been annexed by Alexander I around 480 BC. The present type with the young hero wearing a Macedonian Petasos could indicate the early occupation of the Bisaltae territory by the Macedons.
