ROMAN AND BYZANTINE COINS
-. Medallion (Bimetallic, copper and orichalcum, 37mm, 65.96 g 12), Rome, 243-244. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FELIX AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to left, holding a spear over his right shoulder with his right hand and with a shield over his left shoulder; on the shield, emperor riding left over a prostrate enemy, with Victory before him and a soldier behind. Rev. PAX AETERNA At the center, Sol, his right hand raised in salutation and holding a legionary standard in his left, standing facing in a facing quadriga; to left, legionary standard; below, reclining figures of the Euphrates and the Tigris facing each other; to right, Gordian, in military dress, standing left and sacrificing over altar to left; behind him, legionary standard and Victory, raising her right hand to crown him with a wreath. Cohen 172. Gnecchi II, p. 89, 24 and pl. 104, 7 ( same obverse die ). Very rare and impressive. Outer (copper) rim slightly corroded, but overall with a fine green patina, and with a fine high relief portrait. About extremely fine. Ex M & M Numismatics, Ltd (USA), I, 7 December 1997, 361.
This rare and spectacular medallion was produced to commemorate the Roman campaign against the Persians, ostensibly led by Gordian but actually under the direction of his father-in-law, Timesitheus. This invasion proved very successful, the Romans winning a signal victory at the battle of Resaena in 243; this piece was probably minted at that time. The campaign itself came to an unsuccessful end with the deaths of both Timesitheus and Gordian III, both probably assassinated by the later emperor Philip I. The Romans produced bimetallic medallions (usually with copper rims encasing an orichalcum center) because of the attractive contrasting colors of red and gold they would have had when new.

The Social War. Marsic Confederation AR Denarius. Bovianum, Corfinium or Aesernia, 89 BC. Laureate and draped bust of Italia left; behind, Oscan inscription: viteliú / Soldier standing facing, head right, resting foot on uncertain object, holding sword and inverted spear; beside him to right, recumbent bull; I in exergue. Campana group 9b, 137 (D94/R116); Sydenham 627; HN Italy 407. 3.62g, 19mm, 12h.
Very Rare. Extremely fine, lightly toned.
Ex William N. Rudman Collection;
Ex BVH Collection;
Ex Triton V, January 2002, lot 1817.
This type was issued during the Social War (91-88 BC) by the Italic allies of the Marsic confederation, Marsi, Peligni, Piceni, Vestini, Samnites, Frentani, Marrucini, and Lucani, during their last struggle for independence against the dominant leadership of Rome. The coins not only helped pay for the troops, but were also used as propaganda against Rome.
The types issued by the Marsic Confederation are predominantly silver and weigh approximately the same as a contemporary Roman denarius. Their circulation continued even after the conflict ended, alongside their republican models.

The Social War. Coinage of the Marsic Confederation. 90-88 BC. AR Denarius (3.66 g, 6h). Corfinium mint. Series 3d. Laureate head of Italia left / Oath-taking scene: youth kneeling by standard, holding pig at which eight soldiers (four on each side) point their swords; P in exergue. Campana 72 (D45/R62); Sydenham 621. VF, dark toning, small edge nick, slight roughness, minor area of flat strike. Rare.
Ex Numismatic Fine Arts XXXI (18 March 1993), lot 471.
The revolt of Rome's Italian allies (socii, hence ‘Social War’) broke out toward the close of the year 91 BC and was the culmination of longstanding grievances occasioned by the Senate's inept handling of foreign relations. The Marsi were especially prominent in this movement, hence the name ‘Marsic Confederation’ which is often applied to the rebel state. The main fighting was in the years 90-89 BC and the rebellion assumed alarming proportions when both consuls for 90 BC were defeated by rebel armies. Rome appeared to be in serious danger of defeat, but the movement collapsed as suddenly as it had begun. The victory was probably achieved largely through the political concession of granting Roman citizenship to the enemy. Thereafter, all of Italy south of the Po was united by this common bond. The coinage of the Marsic Confederation is of great interest, consisting principally of silver denarii, some of which bear the names of the rebel generals. This exceptional specimen records a certain Gaius Paapius Mutilius, consul of the rebel state and commander of the Samnite forces. Mutilius was defeated by Sulla in the later stages of the war and his subsequent history is uncertain, though it is possible that he survived to extreme old age when a wealthy man described as “a leader of the Samnites during the Social War” was proscribed by the Triumviral government in 43 BC (cf. Appian, Civil Wars, iv. 25). The reverse depicts an oath-taking scene symbolizing the unity of the confederation of Italian states. Interestingly, the entire coin type is closely modeled on an issue of the moneyer Tiberius Veturius whose coinage is dated by Crawford (234/1) to circa 137 BC. Veturius' reverse shows two soldiers taking the oath and is generally interpreted as referring to an agreement made with the Samnites in 321 BC (treaty of Caudium). This would have made it especially appropriate for an issue of the Samnite leader in the Social War.

Bronzo guerriera celtica.jpg

CELTIC, Britain. Catuvellauni & Trinovantes. Cunobelin. Circa 10-41 AD. AE Unit (3.09 gm). Celtic Warriors Type. Warrior on horse right, CVNOB around / Warrior standing left, holding spear and shield, TASCII[O] [VA]NTIS around, beaded border. Hobbs 1961-67; Van Arsdell 2093; SCBC 338. Good VF, bright glossy green patina, clear figures. ($400)

From the Chris King Collection. Found Hertfordshire, 1995.

The plump belly and breasts suggest that the warrior on horseback might be female, like the riders on several Gallic coins (e.g. De la Tour 6756). She (or he) seems to be riding without any clothes on, raised javelin in right hand, large oval shield with beaded rim in left hand. The reverse is remarkable because it is the only ancient British coin which depicts a fully accoutred foot soldier. D. Allen says: “In a somewhat Roman pose the coin shows a most un-Roman soldier standing with a spear as tall as he is, held upright in his right hand. On his left arm he has a deep, almost hemispherical shield, quite different from the apparently flat round shields of the short-sword fighters.” (Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society 24, 1958, pg. 53).
