Classical Numismatic Group, Inc., Triton XV, lotto 897.  THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Tetrachalkon or Trihemiobol (23mm, 11.76 g, 12h). Eubiotos and Petraios, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / [ΘEΣ]ΣA-ΛΩN, Taurokathapsia scene: The hero Thessalos jumping from his horse, in background galloping right, onto a bull running right, the head of which he restrains with a band held in both of his hands; [EY]BIOTOY above, ΠETPAIOΣ below. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 58 corr. (scene misdescribed); see also Nomos 4, 1391 with additional reference to the article by Stoyas. Near VF, green patina.
The reason four of these coins are offered here together, is the attempt to show (by illustrating a variety of reverse dies) the taurokathapsia scene as clearly as possible. The man has just jumped off his horse, which is galloping away in the background, and has put the band around the bull’s forehead. On the last two coins, we can see one of his legs dangling in the air below the bull. His body is hidden by the bull’s body, but we can see his head and his arms, especially his right one.

THESSALY, Trikka. 4th century BC. Æ Chalkous (12mm, 1.36 g, 1h). Head of the nymph Trikke right, wearing earring; Δ behind neck / TPIK–K–AI–Ω–[N] (AI upside down), warrior, nude but for crested helmet, advancing right, holding spear in right hand and shield in left. Rogers –; BCD Thessaly II 787.3 (same dies). Near VF, olive green patina that is flaked around the edges. From the BCD Collection.A note from BCD from the Triton sale: The signed obverses of Trikka are of superior style but not always carefully struck. It seems that the die cutters had no control over the mint workers as is sometimes the case with the earliest Thessalian bronzes.

Calabria, Tarentum AR Nomos. Circa 215-212 BC. Xeonkrathes, magistrate. Bearded strategos on horse walking left, wearing short tunic and chlamys, raising right hand in salutation, parazonium under left arm; ΞΕΝΟΚΡΑΤΗC below, monogram and pileus above / Wreathed Taras seated astride dolphin to left, naked but for chlamys raised in left hand, trident over right shoulder; waves with cuttlefish below, TAPAΣ to left, monogram to right. Vlasto 955-958; HN Italy 1058. 6.34g, 20mm, 9h. Near Extremely Fine. The earlier dating of this bellicose issue by Rutter and Vlasto (235-228 BC) does not take into account the fact that this type is found freshly struck in hoards that can be dated to after 215 BC on account of their containing Roman Victoriati, which are securely dated to 211-208. Rome considered Tarentum to be a considerable liability and likely to go over to Hannibal, having only recently been conquered and sacked (272 BC) by Roman forces after the departure of Pyrrhos, and was heavily garrisoned as a result. This issue, with its depiction of a strategos as liberator, denoted by the pileus, may be a thinly veiled declaration of support for the Punic warlord. The presence however of a Greek magistral name as well as the distinct Tarentine style indicates this issue must have been produced prior to the Punic occupation of the city.

LOKRIS
LOKRI OPUNTII
Drachm, circa 300 BC.
AR 5.31 g., 12¢. Head of Demeter l., hair wreathed with three leaves of wheat, wearing triangular drop earring and necklace. Rev. Ajax advancing l, viewed ¾ from behind, with spear and shield decorated with Gorgoneion. ΛOKΡΩN, from top r. down circular, monogram UPO between his legs. Corpus group 2, 3b. De Luynes 1960 (same dies).
Extremely rare. One of only six known Lokri drachms. Corroded surfaces,
especially on the obverse, otherwise about very fine / very fine. Ex CH 8 (1994) 254 but not mentioned as part of the contents.
The long spear of Ajax and the spearhead embedded on his shield just below the face of the Medusa (see above, lot 75) are also visible on the reverse of this drachm. This means that the Lokri reverse die was carefully copied from the Opuntian.
This collector has always wanted to own a nice specimen of this coin and after some research has concluded that two of these rarities that appeared in past auctions are now unaccounted for: the Jameson specimen, no. 2058 in the catalogue, and Pozzi (Boutin) 3133, the better one of the two Pozzi pieces, the one that never made it to the Naville I sale. The other Pozzi piece, no. 1346 in the sale, is now part of the Empedocles collection and awaits publication in a future SNG Greece volume. [Information courtesy of Alan Walker who owns the Jacob Hirsch auction copy of the Pozzi sale with the names of the buyers]. Looking at the published forgeries of Christodoulos in the Journal International d’Archéologie Numismatique of 1920, one wonders if this better Pozzi piece was condemned because of the similarity of its reverse die to Christodoulos 233. The variation of the reversed N at the end of the legend on the fake illustrated by Svoronos would not be of any significance; Christodoulos, as well as his follower Orphanides, were well known for continuously retouching and altering their dies between strikings so that practically none of their forgeries were exact die duplicates.

The Roman Republic
L. Axsius L.f. Naso, Axia, Rome, 71 BC (RRC), 73 BC (BMCRR), Denarius , AR, gr. 3,9, mm 19. Helmeted head of Mars r.; below, NASO; before, S.C; behind, control-mark. Rv. Diana in biga of stags r., holding reins in l. hand and spear in r. hand; behind, two dogs; below, dog; behind, control-mark; in ex. L. AXSIVS. L. F. RRC 400/1b; BMCRR Roma 3354; B.Axia 2; Sydenham 795, Catalli 2001, 570.
Rare. Fine style. Old cabinet tone. Extremely fine.
The coin is probably the banker mentioned in the “tessera nummularia” (ILLRP 1019), or the person who was outlawed in the triumviris’ lists in 43 b.C., during the civil war. A. Axius, one of his ancestors, was friend with Cicero (Cic. Ad. Att., III, 15; IV, 15). On the front of the coin is the figure of a young Mars wearing a helmet embellished on the sides by two feathers; iconographic custom confirmed by Valerio Massimo who speaks of the helmet of the god as: “galea duobus distincte pinnis” (Val. Max., I, 8,6).
The helmet has two variances: with and without the ridge. On the opposite side is Diana standing on the chariot pulled by two deers, followed and preceded by small dogs. The choice of depicting Diana might refer to the origins of the gens Axia of the Sabina region where the worship of the goddess was particularly strong. The deers are natives of India - Plinio (N. H., VIII, 76) talks about them.
