I have substantially reorganised my albums of Roman Republican coin images on Flickr, deleting some 500 images of low quality coins that have since been upgraded, removing duplicate images except where I’ve photos of two excellent examples, restoring a proper Crawford ordering to the sets, editing some older photos, and aligning the arrangement exactly with my “red trays” Ahala collection arrangement. The coin albums contain the individual images of those from my collection as well as interspersed images of coins from the Phillip Davis, Winckless, Collections B and STR, and British Museum BMCRR, where those images will improve the albums. The albums are pretty much complete from a Crawford number perspective, in all metals, aes grave, gold, silver and bronze.

I have also rigorously excluded any provincial, Italian civic and aes grave issues, and imitative issues from these albums. I do have separate albums of Roman provincial and local coins including imitatives, which are now due some housekeeping, so they are not for display yet.

What is not included are any new coins acquired since 2013. I’ve not added individual coin photos in two years, but they will come in time. It was important to first do some housekeeping on the basic arrangement of the albums before inviting new visitors. Now it’s all nice and sparkly and ready.

The top level arrangement:

Within this, the Ahala Collection of Principal Coins of the Roman Republic presented in red trays, updated to 2013:

Other collections at the top level still need housekeeping but this note concerns the newly rearranged coin albums, whose setup now exactly mirrors the Ahala Collection. Whilst the arrangement is new, the contents reflect coins only until 2013, so there will be a lot of new content in time.

For this introductory time only I think it worthwhile to mention each set individually, as some require comments:

Cr.1-27 Early Roman Coinage 326-226BC. Not included are aes rude or Italian aes grave:

Cr.28-41 Quadrigatus coinage, Hannibals conquests 225-214BC
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/sets/72157651230969165/

Cr.41-66 Rome, central Italy, Sardinia second Punic war 214-206BC. The post-semilibral bronzes have been organised in two groups that correspond with my A1 and A2 groups in Essays Russo. The sextantal bronzes have been organised in three groups that correspond with my G1, G2 and G3 groups in Essays Russo. The half-weight overstrikes, my group H1, have been tentatively placed with the Sardinian issues. All other anonymous bronzes (formerly known as Crawford 56) have been relocated to wherever their related series with symbols sits, e.g. the anonymous bronzes related to the Dolphin series now sit with the Crawford 80 Dolphin series.

Cr.42,67-96 Sicily, S.E. Italy second Punic war 214-206BC. I’ve integrated the corn-ear Crawford 42 and 72, which should never have been split by the author of RRC as they are evidently one series.

Cr.43,97-111 Etruria, Luceria, Canusium, second Punic war 214-206BC. I’ve included the Luceria L Crawford 43 with Crawford 97,98,99 and 100 but I’ve maintained the Crawford numbering for the moment as these need complete rearrangement, which demands an article, which I’m working on.

Cr.112-138 Punic war conclusion, conquest of Spain 206-190BC. Some of these issues eg VAR, QLC, human head are probably Punic war era but it’s not entirely clear so I present in the original Crawford order:

Cr.139-172 Macedonian Wars 190-170BC

Cr.199-235 Third Punic war, Carthage and Corinth destroyed

Cr.236-279 Gracchi brothers 137-121 BC

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/sets/72157651129266002/

Cr.336-358 Social War, Sulla, Marius, Cinna 92-83BC. I’ve regrettably now excluded the Social War coinage of the Marsic Confederation from this set as they are not Roman.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/sets/72157650725641730/

Cr.359-404 Sulla's dominance 83-70 BC.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/sets/72157651108966152/

Cr.405-439 First Triumvirate Caesar Pompey Crassus Cicero 69-50BC. I’ve neatly side-stepped the “problem” caused by the publication of the Mesagne hoard, that required a wholesale redating of the coins around 60BC, by including all the date-disputed coin types within this single album. So I still follow Crawford’s arrangement for this album, but each coin type must be consulted for its correct dating.

Cr.440-462 Julius Caesar versus Pompey the Great 49-46BC. This is by far the smallest album in the collection as a consequence of dividing the Imperatorial era into understandable eras. I’ve in general made the albums smaller and covering shorter time periods in this intense period, so as to better aid understanding of the conflict on the ground. It’s a similar approach to that I took in the second Punic war.

Cr.463-482 Julius Caesar as Dictator 46-44BC

Cr.516-543 Second Triumvirate, Antony versus Octavian 42-31BC
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/sets/72157641828893123/

Cr.544-546 & Octavian, Actium and Octavian's Supremacy 34-27BC. I split this last set before Actium so I could present the legionary coinage of Antony in the same set as the Caesae Divi F series of Octavian, which were struck about the same times and before Actium.

With this big update I feel rather like I do when I’ve just cleaned my house, and I’m looking forward to photographing and introducing lots of new coins from the acquisition classes of 2013 and 2014 over the coming months. I haven’t updated my main web-pages at http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/ yet to reflect this cleaned-up arrangement but that will be done in time.

Andrew
